Whew doggie... I first read that title as "Folding Molester"... was about to go check on the children (that I dont have).
 
Figure a little 4,000 or so PPD monster.....How much fun is that? Only about $1300 in power bills a year also.
 
Yeah, I heard about that. But I also heard of something even more yummy. Quad opteron 1U goodness. That's right. Four dual-core opterons on one motherboard.

I'll take either one for Christmas... :)

Hmmmm... $2200 for the box, $1500*4 for CPUs, call it a grand for 8*1GB memory, for $9200 you've got a heck of a box - 8*2 gHz in 1U. I'll take seven.

Nope, it's attempting numbering by the scheme used by the layout. Scroll all the way to the end and you're at page 8 (79 of 79), because it's on "page" B-8, but on the 79th page. Grr at Adobe. In any case, page 1-10 (the sixteenth page) is the one I'm talking about. But I'm sure you figured that out already.

 
yeah i did... i was just wanting to voice at how much i hate PDF's and i wish they would go away

when you load one at school it takes like 5 mins to open it

That's not very cost effective. You could get 8x(Athlon 64 X2 3800+) complete systems for under $5,000. That's twice as much Mhz for around half the cost. Or to put it another way, for the same amount of money, you could have about 32 cores folding for you. Would't be as cool, true, but the PPD would walk all over that box.

Not as cool...not as small. All that in 1U. 8xX2 3800's would take up a lot of space compared to a nice little 1U server.

QFT, these cores are 2x2gHz at 55 watts total. And there's only one (two?) hard drive(s?) for the whole thing, and it's a high efficiency server psu, and 1u is *tiny* - think about it, a large computer case is about 4 or 5u.... :drool:

That's right... 8 sockets. And it's not even the most efficient HT layout, but it's *8*! I know what I want for my birthday! A pony, of course.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that hates acrobat reader. I personally call in the "Adobe virus", since every new version chews up more ram, and doesn't seem to add a damn bit of functionality.

As far as the topic goes, I thought FAH only supports 8 instances on a machine, so 16 cores wouldn't be all that useful right now.

The key word here is "supports". You can do it in Linux by running one instance with machine ID 1, then deleting a certain folder in /tmp, then go back to start until you've got enough instances going, where "enough" is as many as you want. There's no registry to mess things up, just you - you could easily accidentally start 2N instances, for instance, and not notice (until they started a core each and memory bogged down :rolleyes: ). It lends one a great deal of flexibility.

Trust me, there are many out there that would love to see that festering pile of shit called Acrobat (or Adobe Reader or whatever they call it this week) to die a quick and painful death. It was a "decent" format but just sucks ass anymore.

Also, on a Windows machine you can only have up to 8 instances. I believe you can have more than that on a Linux box through a little trickery or something. Someone else would have to chime in on whether that is accurate or not. It's the reason why I would just prefer to have a couple 4 socket boards over an 8 socket board. Besides, much less chance for trouble I think and it wouldn't raise the power requirements too much.

I just found a program called PDF speedup that actually helps. I still hate the format, but at least it doesn't bog my machine to a crawl now.

And mage explained how to get around the 8 machine ID limit. It's an Interesting and creative solution. :)

QFT. I installed Acrobat Reader 7 a while ago. I was so shocked by how much space it took on the hard drive (70MB for a document display app!?!?), I chucked it and installed v5. Now if I could only force it to stop telling me "your old version doesn't support some features of this document that you've never heard about, let alone would ever use"...

Aaaaanyway, yeah the 4proc board is more expensive by a whole lot, and so are the processors, but think of the potential density, man! A full 42U rack would be 168 processors, 336 cores! At 150ppd, that's over 50,000ppd! (at the cost of a mere 40kW of power). In a single rack!
