Folding@home, Amd or Intel?

Just curious, which processor is the fastest folder, Athlon64 or p4? If you for an example compare a p4 3.0 to an Athlon64 3000+ on the same protein, which would "win"? Anyone ever made a direct comparison between similar rated AMD/Intel processors?
 
The athlon64 usually is better in most cores. The only reason to get Intel is the QMD cores which have the highest PPD and only supports Intel CPUs.

 
Athlon 64's all the way. But QMDs are great, turn in a 450pt daily on a 3ghz+ CPU.

Another vote for AMD. If you really want a great folder and want space efficiency, loosen your belt, belly up, and plop down for a dual-core. If you want the production of 4 computers, get a dual-dualcore opteron rig.

In my rough guess, an X2 3800+ probably puts out about 230-300ppd. Very, Very nice.

Or for something really cheap, low end a64 (oc'd stably) or a sempron (again oc it) won't fail you.

If you're just going by what you have around... borg the intels and amd's :p
 
On my A64 3000 oc'd to 2.9...a 364 pt'er takes ~19-20hrs.....that's about the best ppd for me. I think the 600pt gromacs take about 40hrs....I can't remember exactly as I havent had one in awhile on this box.

My main desire to get a dual core opteron 165 is for folding. It would be pretty sweet to have 1 box with 2 cores folding away at 2.8 - 3.0ghz each :cool:
 
AH! AMD people invading forums! J/K. I go Intel. QMDs are the Fillet Mignon of WU.

That's 230-300ppd per core. So 460-600 ppd total. For an AMD X2. I was seeing 250ppd per core on my stock 3800+. Now if you overclocked them...

All the protiens are bench-marked at 110 points per day by Stanford on an 2.8 Ghz Intel P4.
That works out ay 1.6 Points per Hour per Ghz.
So running with SSE boost you should get that.

Running without SSE boost you will run at half that speed.

How much faster you run depends on a number of things.
All AMD's fold Tinkers at twice this speed.
All big packet Gromac's fold at twice this speed.
SSE2 & SSE3 can give you a boost in speed if both your cpu and the protien can use them.
Plus some protien get benched wrong and just fold faster than they should..... :D

So the range is anything from 1.6 PpHpG all the way upto 7+ PpHpG.

Plus it maybe cheaper to run two mobile CPU's as opposed to one high end one and still do more Points per Day.

Don't forget to factor in higher power useage for P-4 processors, as well as more heat. This becomes very significant if you have a few machines...

As most of us long term folders have found out it’s pretty hard to beat AMD for overall production.

I just computed my PPD on my 3700 (single core) over the last 120 days - 216 PPD. X2 would effectively double that and the 3800 might run at a higher clock speed than the 2.2GHZ of the 3700...(too lazy to look it up now)..

 
My stock P4 640 (3.2GHz) puts out 450 points every 20-21 hours, and one day a week it'll be a 900 point day.

My overclocked A64 3200+ just can't touch that, even running large WUs.

Is that using the -advmethods flag or not?

Not necessarily. You have to have bigunits enabled in order for the -advmethods flag to work, but you can do big WUs without using -advmethods. On a dual-core, I would suggest only setting one core to big units, leaving the other on normal WUs. Big WUs tend to swamp the memory bus, and two of them will create a pretty bad bottleneck.
