Finally got my xigmatek cooler for my q6600 and will be installing it later this week. I also got my e8400 and saw the rather short heat sink. My question is this should I use the heat sink that came with it or the q6600's heat sink once i install the xigmatek ?


 
I'd get another aftermarket... but the one that came with the Q6600 is indeed better than the E8400 stock HSF.
 
Choose whichever heatsink out of the two is beefier. The Q6600 heatsink should also have a copper core which should help out a bit. Even though I don't think much of the stock Q6600 heatsinks, they are usually better than the heatsinks you get with the lower end (less heat producing) processors.

The funny thing is that the heatsink which came with my old E6400 is identical to the Q6600 heatsinks I got as stock except that the fan on the Q6600 heatsink is just a little bit bigger. That heatsink has the copper core and everything.

 
Yeah, just grab the Q6600. That's what I did with the e2160 ones for my friends so it can run at 3 GHz fine without one cent to spend (I had a bunch unused).

 
I'm a bit of a snob I only use TRUE's I also tend to overclock every quad to 3.2-3.6Ghz running up to 1.5v to the processor.

The xigmatech is pretty cheap right now ($36.99 no MIR) and it includes free shipping from the 'egg. It can keep up with the TRUE 120 (except maybe at 3.6, but not every chip can hit that anyway).

 
To be honest I've read nothing but good reviews on the Xigmatek HSF cooler :D

Not in anyway putting the TRUE down (it's also my favorite, but that was before the Xigmatech), but for us mild overclocking 24/7 folders the Xigmatech is a whole lot cheaper. (yeah I know, I sound like an echo)

PS That was before I fell in love with WC'ing and IMO air coolin' is still better for a dedicated 24/7 folder.

 
Q6600 has the copper core.... much better than the crap one that came with the e8400.

Also, with the 45nm running cooler by design, the AC7 Pro works great with it. I'm folding 24/7 and multi-tasking with my e8400 w/AC7 and my temps barely break 50C @ 3.6.

 
Just using the q6600 cooler temporarily till i get a replacement for it. Problem with that is it will be going into a sff case, qpack2 specifically so my choices are fairly limited. Right now I'm looking at a zalman 8700 due to the clearance it allows.




 
Echo, echo. Yep count me in on the Xigmatek 1283 bandwagon. Even with the crappy pushpin setup, it's cooling my quad quite nicely, more or less the same temps on the dual 120mm/original (un bracketed) Apogee/dirty ass loop water setup I've been running for the past 2 years+. I wouldn't say the 1283 is just for "mild" overclockers, 3.6 @ 1.465/1.475v out of a q6600 is nothing to sneeze at.

Other than the noted pushpin mounting, I'd say you need to alter the thermal paste application on these HSFs too, due mostly to the exposed heatpipes/fairly big depressions between them & the aluminum base. I've seen an application method roundup (using AC MX-2?) somewhere, although I really think it may vary from system to system for some. Oh, and clearance may be an issue, I can barely fit my 1283 in my case, the Armor 8003 - due to the 250mm side panel fan - I have at most a few mm's of clearance from the tips of the heatpipes.
 
I already have the xigmatek S1283 :p I believe the scythe mini ninja is just a tad bit to tall to fit into the qpack 2 :(

Man, I totally missed this was an SFF build.

Are you sure the Schythe Mini Ninja won't fit? I thought I saw one in a QPack2. It may require some modding to make it fit, but I'm pretty sure I saw one in the SFF Gallery.

Agreed on it not only being good for mild overclockers. It keeps my 3.4Ghz quad at right around 50c at full load with the push pins.


 
Suggest using the q6600 stock HSF on E8400 only if you are not overclocking.
I had way too many problems with a slight OC on an E8400 stock q6600 HSF.
 
Just received my 2 Xigmatek HDT-S1283 yesterday and installed one (with the TR bolt-thru kit instead of push-pins). It works great, kept at 42C top under full load at 3.0 GHz and I'll crank it up tonight now that I'm done configuring that box (my 4th quad).

Hey thanks for the info brother Xilikon, as much as I love WC'ing I think (hope) to get a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 to put on a my (always late for the show) dedicated Q6600 folding rig :D

 
While nothing beat WC for the best performance, a Xigmatek is enough for a dedicated folding box. The saved money can go toward a extra boxen ;)

Gave up on the uGuru for Windows crap as it was buggy as hell and working the overclock in the BIOS uGuru menu only. Temps reported by CoreTemp run from 65 to 71, one core usually is at 71 and once in a while I will see 72 for a second. Also have 2 120mm case fans in this box. The Xig is installed with AS5. Overclock is at 333x9 1333 FSB 1:1 1.34V. So I'm only at 3ghz on this. Mind you this is an older core Q6600 SL9UM B3. With temps hitting where they are at full load should I risk trying to go higher?

 
Wow that is hot... is the Xigmatek with dual fans in push pull config? Which fans? I'd get some 78cfm Yate loons and also would reseat... I know the B3's run hotter, but not 15c+ Hotter from what I have heard.

Hmm... ATM my Q6600 G0 (OC'ed mildly to 3.0 GHz, 9x333), ambient temp 22c, according to Core Temp beta 0.99 and RealTemp v2.5 (both are about the same and both give me a TJMax of 100c, I have adjusted and calibrated RT), my under water Q6600 G0 is reading a "rocking" 41c, 42c, 38c, 39c, while folding only 1x WinSMP client. :D

ATM, my Q6600 G0, with WinXP w/SP3, is being used for my main boxen (it also folds 24/7). I have 2x other boxen (E6600's), mildly OC'ed and air cooled by Zalman 9700's. These 2x other boxen are primarily 24/7 folders running Ubuntu v8.04 LinSMP and run, according to the Linux coretemp module, about 45c (never goes over 47c, ambient 22c :p)

I have the Gkrellm coretemp temps at a +15c in configure. (I haven't done the "calibration" thing so these temps are probably too high, at least I hope so :rolleyes:)

IMHO, I think the Xig 120mm is more than sufficient for cooling a Q6600 G0 for a pretty much 24/7 folder. If and when I get another quad, either another Q6600, or a Q6700, Q9450 or maybe a Q9200 (pretty much give up on the Q9300, might as well go with a 7 multi as a 7.5 multi), I don't know yet because I'm waiting on some in the "wild" tests for the Q9200 cpu (ain't even released yet :(). I'll probably go with a Xig cooler for any 24/7 boxen or maybe H2O because I love WC'ing ;) (hmm... I have an extra 220 rad, MCP350 pump in the closet, decisions, decisions :eek:)

Edit: Yeah, I agree with the above poster. I know the Q6600 B3 runs hotter, but not that much hotter than a G0 stepper. Maybe you need a HSF reseat, TIM amount adjustment, a different HSF fan, more case fans or only God knows to bring those temps down I've always tried to use AS5, but I've read where there are some TIM's on the market that don't have a "break in" period? :confused:

The Xig itself just has a single 120mm fan it came with. Then the case has a 120 in the front as intake, another 120mm at the back for exhaust plus the 120mm in the power supply on exhaust. The 2 case fans are Arctic Cooling brand. Case is a Thermaltake Soprano, only has 2 hard drives in the box plus an older X1950 ATI card for video which has a Arctic Cooling fan on it.
 
Even for a B3, those temps sound high. I only have G0s, but the temps aren't that much different. It sounds like the temps on the individual cores are pretty close together which normally means the base of the heatsink and the base of the heatspreader are flat. It may be worth looking into lapping the bottom of the heasink anyway, just in case.

The only other thing I can think of is the mounting of the heatsink. There is a chance the mounting is not good which is causing the problems with the temps.

Either way, I probably wouldn't try pushing the CPU to higher speeds until those temps drop. High 60s and low 70s for temps is a bit too warm for my tastes.

 
Did you use the stock push-pins on the Xig ?

IMHO, It's better to get a Thermalright LGA775 bolt-thru mechanism and replace it. That's what I have on my 3 Xigmatek and it works great. Without it, the temps is so-so because it's so hard to have a proper mount with the push-pins.

 
It is using the push pin mount.... I'll look around and see if I can order a bolt through kit. Once that comes in I'll pull the HS and lap and polish the base as well. Who sells the bolt through kits?

Actually, no it can’t keep up. In fact I just sent one back.

I think you will find those who run the TRUE or its little brother the Ultima-90 with a 120mm fan will agree.

Obviously nobody can be certain of an over clock but I never see a temp above 58c and that’s on a balmy day, no AC on etc.

Actually I believe TigerBitten is using the new server version of the Ultima-90 with great success. I have one more quad to add and there is no question about either of the better ThermalRight HS plus Scythe 120 fans.

You just can’t keep your CPU too Cool.:cool:


 
BillR, your experience is different from mine. However, did you use the stock mounting ? I have the same experience as you with the stock mount but when I got the bolt-thru kit, it's improved greatly and it ran great for me. That's why I now own 3 Xigmatek, 1 TR Ultra-120 (non-extreme) and watercooling on my main pc.

 
Is the thermal paste on effectively? Take the HSF off and check the bottom. If it doesn't have a even coating across the CPU, then reapply it.
 
It "should" be.... less than a grain of rice worth spread nice smooth and even with a razor blade. I got the bolth through kit ordered for the heatsink. Once that comes in I'll tear it all down, lap, etc and see how things look once it's all back up. It's 100% stable as it is right now at 3ghz so it should be fine till next weekend.
 
@MixManSC

If you have some questions about your HSF base bein' uneven or you're cpu heatspreader is concave or convex do the "ketchup trick". (there are also other methods) :)

Take a clean piece of glass, squirt some ketchup on it, everyone seems to have ketchup and it's easy to clean off. Please clean and wipe dry after using because it's conductive. Put the HSF base or cpu against the ketchup (the part that is TIM'ed), glass and turn the glass over.
Then you'll notice, by thicknes, color or blank spaces anywhere the cpu or HSF is not making a good contact. :)

I honestly hope this will help, because even with (I hate them) push/pin mounts I'm pretty sure you're temps should be lower (even a B3).

You might also check, as suggested prior, how well you're mount is or how much TIM you used. (I always figure excess TIM will just be pressed out and hope it doesn't short anything. :D

Edit: Although I have "lapped" everything from HSF's, cpu heatspreaders, etc I wouldn't lap anything unless it was critical or necessary. Like if the HSF's base is rough or fubared, the cpu because it's hard to "de lid" a cpu so if it's convex or concave it needs lapping or if you're into some serious OC'ing and every degree counts (IMO not for a 24/7 folder)
