might not be the bet place for this, if not mods please move / delete.

One of the nicest ladies you'd ever meet from my old job up north passed away from cancer, started in her tongue (smokers take note) and spread. We'll miss you, Helen.

Another one up there was just diagnosed with terminal cancer. Prayers to you Karen.

My neighbor's wife's father has brain cancer, he comes and goes. Fight hard guy.

My son's girlfriends' mother just passed away from cancer three days ago. She's not in any more pain, if it helps, Sarah.

My brother has drank his pancreas into mush, now they're wondering if it's cancerous. Lay off the beer and start eating, Tony.

And my father has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, early stages. Beat it like you mean it dad.

I work at a urology center, specializing in cancer of the urinary tract. I sit at desks working on systems with paperwork all over them, can't help but peek at them. Shocking how many people die from cancer.

We sold a lot of land last week, should get the check next week. After paying off credit cards, putting braces on the kid, and a lot of little fix-ups for the house, wife and I are splitting the remainder. I should have about 6K for whatever.

Should I buy and set up a bunch of lower power machines, maybe 10 like Athlon XP 1Ghz or so, or should I wait and build a couple high power machines, maybe Opterons or 64 X2s, which would produce more units and therefore more possible clues to a cure?

In general the rule of thumb is this.

It is cheaper to set up the farm by building a farm of overclocked Athlon XP's or Athlon Mobiles.

However you will end up paying more for electricity in the long run. If power over the long run is an issue, getting say 2 athlon64 4000's or dualies, or even the new x2's will give you more output per kilowatt. My guess is dual a64 x2's will put out a sick number of WU's once they are available.

It just really depends on whether or not you wana deal with the energy bill of having 10 or so rigs rolling.

Fewer higher power systems will generally be better in the long run. If you have the money, duallies are usually pretty good to have especially if you can overclock them. The power used per dually system is higher than a single CPU system but is still lower than two single systems that run the same CPUs. You only have one power supply, vid card, hard drive, CD-ROM and so on.

What I would be currently interested in is either the X2's or the dual core Opterons. The dual core Opterons may be way out of the price range, though. It would be nice to have a dually board and toss two of the dual core Opterons in it for four folding instances. You'd need a good bit of RAM, probably around 2 gig to make sure it runs bigpackets on each CPU, though. The CPUs and RAM costs would add up quickly.

Take what you want of that. I would not go with multiple lower power systems. They will chew up more electricity in the long run and will be obsolete much faster. Right now I probably wouldn't spend the money on anything slower than a 2 Ghz AMD whether it is an A64 or mobile XP for a single CPU system. The A64s look to be better for folding than the XPs anymore since prices have dropped on them some and they are somewhat more efficient than the XPs for folding. Tigerbiten has the stats on Athlon MP and Opteron dually systems I believe. I can't shed any light on P4 systems like that. I haven't owned one and don't think I ever will. To me, AMD systems seem a little better suited to folding overall.

QFT

I'd suggest a few x2s, the 4200s or 4400s. Work out how much the rest of the system works out to, and then calculate the best gHz per dollar for each of the processors. Buy Fortron 350w power supplies. $44 and really good.

If you'd like to get a fold-server installation going, that would save you $ on hard drives for all the machines. Email me if you hit any snags. I'd be glad to help you out.

Excellent advice all, thanks.

The 4400 X2s come out on the 16th from what I read. About the same day we'll get the check. It has to be destiny.

All I can do is reinforce what the others have been saying. I like the A64's over the AXP's. A64's are good on power and heat and will put out more WU's for not much more $ if you get one that overclocks well. Dual cores would be awesome, but they're going to be pretty spendy. On the other hand, they may work out pretty well $ wise when you compare one dual core system to two complete systems with all of their components included. Have fun putting stuff together!
