Do any of you guys fold on your main gaming machine? I fold with several PCs at home and at work but not on my main machine. The stats are in my sig. I was wondering if it would affect anything at all. I have read the FAQ that it shouldnt but I just wanted to know what some of your more experienced folders thought.

My rig folds 24/7 even while gaming. I haven't had any problems. Remember F@H only runs when your processor is idle, so as long as you have enough memory for everything you should be alright.

EDIT: Forgot to mention I'm running 2 console clients.

I don't run F@H on my gaming PC, though I do run UD. I find that UD gives me fewer problems than F@H.

I run 2 instances of FAH on my main PC, havent had any problems while gaming. Its a x2 3800+ w/1gb ram

I normally just pause F@H whenever I play games or something CPU intensive

I don't run it as a service on my gaming rig. For most games it is not a problem. I have had issues with WoW in the past because of the the memory requirement.

edit: Note, with that said, I've completed around 200 work units with my gaming rig.

if you were truly a [H]DC'er you would buy a console as to not waste cycles on games when those could be used for folding

Or play games that don't hog CPU, like Minesweeper ;)

yeah, who needs to dodge mines in BF2 when you can find them in Minesweeper ;)

I fold on my gaming machine while image editing, gaming, working with video, etc..

The only time I pause F@H is when doing benchmarks, overclocking, or doing something where time is of the essence.

I don't get problems....at least not with the console client.

I run two instances and play with no issues. I mostly play WoW though so, not much of a draw anyways. RAM will be a big factor in this I believe.

He's got 2 gigs, i'd worry not.

DO NOT US THE GUI CLIENT and you should be fine. I have a HTPC/Gaming/Main system and i dont see problems running the console version, but did with the GUI client. (it was when i was a noob i didnt know anybetter :))

Both gaming rigs at my house fold 24/7. They are running GUI at the moment, but when I time it at the end of a WU I'll change to console. At the moment we just pause folding.

As long as you have more than 1GB in your system you are fine. My problems have been when system requirements have gone over 1GB and the computer starts using virtual memory.

QFT, that's the biggest problem that ever pops up when people try to fold and game on the same rig. As others have noted, they run the client a variety of different ways. I personally run with the console service and have a pair of .bat files with net start and net stop commands to halt the client when I want to game.

I fold on my machine all the time, even while gaming. Of course, all the games I have are older (most recent one is UT2004).

What for? When you game, there going to shut themselves off. I actually did some benches a while ago with F@H on and F@H off to prove there was no difference, and now I cannot find them. They were nearly identicle though.

In my experience, WoW would peg my CPU usage at >90% from the moment I'd enter a server to the moment I got off.

I would actually get a little work done when WoW was running, but maybe 1 frame over a few hours period.

2 instances running 24/7 on my main / gaming rig, and the only time I ever notice it is roughly an hour into "Customer Service Countertherapy" (deathmatch vs. a horrid number of 'bots in UT2004), when EM3 sounds the time buzzer. FAH doesn't slow me down. Hell, I forget about it unless I'm about to reboot the machine for something like maintenance, then it's all "Hey, I can't do this until it finishes the current frame!"...

X2 4400+ and 2 gig of memory makes for some niiiice headroom. :D

I run two instances of F@H (console version) on my "gaming" computer (opteron 165 OCed by 50%) 24/7. I don't really play games too often these days though, but when I do it has never caused any problems. And no problems when I encode and do other similar things either...

also I set both instances to accept large WU's over 5mb, since I have 2gb. I never even get anywhere near 2gb anyway, even while playing games.
