ive been building computers for the last 17 years.
ive built countless systems for friends and worked as a repair technician when i was younger....

but like a complete idiot i put some ram in backwards, not even noticing it wasnt seated properly (because one of my clips on my dimms broke, it looked like it was in)

powered on computer.
poof.
P6t mobo.gone
AX750.gone.
2 6870s. gone.
ht omega. gone.

cpu, ram, and drives survived.

everything has warranty except the mobo and sound card..so its not super bad except ill be in RMA hell for a month or so.

F..M..L....
 
I've seen someone do that once before. So bad he actually bent on of the pins in the DIMM socket causing it to touch another to short out the board.

Shit happens I guess. RMA'ing stuff is one of the reasons I rarely buy components online because when it breaks I'd rather drive and exchange it and not wait for however long the company wants to take to process it.
 
I don't get it. How the hell do you get ram to go in backwards? :confused:

I guess if it doesn't fit just push harder.

b) one clip was broken, so i could actually clip it in on one side, and it looks like its in.
 
I'm still not getting how that could have killed all the rest of the components, especially the power supply and the PCIe cards. I can believe it would fry the motherboard and the RAM, but are you certain everything else is dead? I've accidentally powered on systems before with the RAM not fully seated, and it never killed anything.

With that being said, you should have to pay for everything out right as warranties shouldn't cover idiots.
 
I just can't believe that installing the RAM backwards would kill the power supply and the PCIe cards. It's not like he was pushing 110 volts through there. Seems like maybe something else is going on.
 
Does sound weird.

Simply because if it was the ram causing a short, surely it would have been the first to die?

As for the 2 cards going as well? dunno. Seems like there was a more serious short elsewhere.
