Flashing the IBM M1015

Hello

I just installed the IBM M1015 Card and have the infamous "no physical memory" error when booting into windows. I am, of course, using an old Gigabyte Motherboard 965P-D3...

I got a Parted Magic Live CD, booted into that, got the MegaCLI from LSI and extracted the rpm and ran it. It works fine, the card is detected and I'am currently executing:
"./MegaCli -adpfwflash -f imr_fw.rom -a0" to flash the card.

The output so far is
Adapter 0: ServeRAID M1015 SAS/SATA Controller
Vendor ID: ...

Package version on the controller: 20.1.1-0049
Package version of the image file: 20.10

That's it, no further progress since 5-10 minutes. Is the beast actually flashing, shall I just wait?

It's been a while since I flashed mine, but I would give it at least 30 minutes. With non-server motherboards, however, the M1015 does not play nice. On my DFI P35 chipset, I could not get it to post into Windows. On an AMD 780 chipset, I was, however. So best of luck, but I'm guessing that is part of your issues.

Thanks for your reply. Indeed I am stuck with the "no physical memory" error.
I am not able to boot into Win7, Win7 Rescue CD, Open Indiana Live CD and FreeDOS from unetbootin.
However Parted Magic is able to boot from CD and the MegaCli commands even detect the controller but silently fail flashing (I aborted the process after about ~1h).
Ubuntu 9 is also booting nicely from CD, however the MegaCli commands do not even detect the controller.

After trying every boot-order and other bios-setting I am about to capitulate :/
IT IS A F*CKING SHAME WITH GIGABYTE AND LSI. That needed to be stated.

I just checked ebay, since there are tons of used cheap-as-**** LGA775 Boards, I will try to get another one. An original Intel, yet consumer-board, should work, doesn't it?
Are there any other brands known to be nicely supporting the PCIe x16 port?

My DG45ID "works" but for some reason the card wont work with LSIs or IBMs drivers in Win7, doesn't seem to be supported in FreeBSD either atm. Haven't had the time for trying out Linux.

I would recommend getting a server chipset for 100% compatibility. Otherwise, you could try another chipset that is verified to work. I have only been able to get it to work on an AMD 780 chipset, so that is my only recommendation. P35 LGA 775 did not work for me.

Here's another thread with people having the same issue:

I have the m1015 working on an AMD 740 chipset Asus board.

Thanks for mentioning. Just installed the card in my new Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4-B3 in the second PCIe x16 (actually x8) and it works flawlessly.

As a note, had to install the windows-drives prior to flashing with Windows MegaCLI... Otherwise MegaCLI cant detect the controller at all...

OK, so the gigabyte-support is working fast and told me to install the Beta-Bios F15c for my 965P-DS3. They state that there is no customer having *any* problems after having installed that bios....

Hopefully their support sent me a version different from the publicly available F15c, since the public version does not affect the LSI-problem, the same low memory or "no physical memory" errors :(

Will try the gigabyte-version when at home...

I've got two P35-DS3P Gigabyte mobos, I shall test on them to see if it's really a Gigabyte thing. On my Asrock X58 Extreme it seems to work (I'm waiting for the 8087 cables to be sure). I already flashed to the latest IBM firmware.

I have done the test, indeed I got a strange error message about 512K of memory or something.

well since this was brought back to the top I will go ahead & ask here since it pertains here as well.. Is there a need to flash to the LSI firmware before switching from windows to *nix. Will be using Fedora 14 (with amahi) and greypool..

I think its a version check issue because of the way the CLI reports the version #s.

Are you sure you have the most updated rom? If So

Code:
MegaCli -adpfwflash -f imr_fw.rom -NoSigChk -NoVerChk -a0

I'm having the same issue with my Gigabyte G31M-ES2L. I mentioned it in my last post to my thread here.

I searched Google and found several links mentioning this issue. The second link mentions MSI and ASRock boards as more compatible with the M1015.

As mentioned in my other thread, I'm looking for a new LGA775 mobo, and your what appears to be successful testing of the M1015 on an ASRock board gives that brand another vote.

I wasn't too sure if anyone else can provide feedback on other manufacturers as well.

Im using a Asus M4A785TD-V EVO and the M1015 and it works without issues.

M1015 is working flawlessly in my GIGABYTE GA-H55M-S2 (rev. 1.3) connected to PCIe x16 slot.

What I guess should be mentioned with "Working" is if its flashed to a 9210-8i or not....
My Intel DG45ID motherboard works fine having it flashed to a 9210-8i but doesn't if M1015 uses the regular firmware IBM and/or LSI.

Many consumer Intel-based boards seem to have trouble with various RAID cards, especially LSI cards. Not quite sure why. PERC5s and the like had the same sort of issue. Some boards would work, some wouldn't. Taping off a couple of the pins on PERC5s fixed it for some boards that it wasn't working for, but not all. Not sure if the same fix would work on the newer LSI cards that still have issues, but you could try it.

I tested on a DFI NF4 SLI-DR and same problem. It has the latest IBM firmware as I use it under Windows and without RAID.

And it's clearly not a Gigabyte thing.

Ive tested/updated/etc over 70 of these on multiple boards; only board I had a problem with was an older Asus board. It would not show up in BIOS or OS no matter what I tried.
