Fixing to build a new PC

I am fixing to build a new PC, mainly for everyday use but I do hit the games quite often when possible. I like FPS games like Crysis and COD4 and the like.

My question is, I run XP now so should I go ahead and go Vista on my new system? 32 bit or 64 bit? Stuff like this confuses me. I like the look of Vista on my cousins PC but I haven't had enough time to really mess around with it to know it.

I am also stuck on which CPU to go with, I have the money to get either an AMD Phenom X4 9600 Quad core, or the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @2.4 Ghz.

I am sure I don't need this much of a CPU but I want it to hold up to games and stuff for a few more years.

Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i would go with a Q6600, IP35 PRO, 4GB ram and Vista ultimate 64

that is the setup i am running as a gaming rig and have not had a single problem with vista, i am also using 2 150GB raptors in RAID0.

i am pretty sure Vista64 runs great on newer hardware and it is older hardware people get problems with vista

I like the features and reviews on the Q6600, I like this place to get real reviews and not some biased website getting kickback on feedback. I just got a GeForce EVGA 8800GT video card, it's Vista and DX10 ready.

Solid gaming build, built to last a while:

CPU: Q6600 G0 OEM - $250 (ClubIT.com)
Motherboard: DFI P35-TR2S - $140 (motherboardpro.com)
GPU: EVGA 8800 GTS 512MB - $300, $260 AR (newegg.com)
RAM: 4GB DDR2-800 2x2GB - $70-90 AR (look around)
PSU: Corsair 550VX - $95 shipped, $15 MIR, $80 AR (directron.com)
Case: Coolermaster RC-690 - $35 shipped (check HotDeals forum)

~$950 shipped, $900 or so AR, maybe a little more, maybe a little less. Just add a monitor.

Thanks for all the info, I already have the case and PSU, really wanted to know about Vista, whether to get a 32 or a 64 bit version, also was trying to compare the Q6600 vs the Phenom 9600.

The Q6600 is a much better CPU than the Phenom. If you're going to get 4GB of RAM, then go for 64bit.

What PSU do you have?

A 600 Watt Coolermaster eXtreme Power, I only have 2 GB of RAM to start with, would 64 bit be ok or should I just stick to 32?

Sell that PSU and pick up the Cosair 550VX for $55 AR -- the deal is in the HotDeals section of the forum. That Coolermaster is not a very good PSU, only their Real Power Pro line is any good.

Vista 64bit will work fine.
