The Digital Home blog has listed their top five tech predictions for 2009. Nothing really earth shattering on the list, what do you guys think will happen in 2009? Let us know your predictions here!

Now that 2009 is only hours away, I thought it was time to unveil this year's 2009 predictions. There's no telling if what I think will happen will come true or not, but I thought I'd fill you in on five of my predictions for the New Year. Please share your own 2009 predictions in the comments with the rest of us, so we can look back a year from now and see who did the best job.

1. Gee...you don't think?
2. We knew this from the start that it was only a 2 year exclusivity deal.
3. Another one no one saw coming (in case no one can tell, sarcasm).
4. No idea on this one, they need to get that OS out as soon as possible to repair damages to their image with Vista.
5. Ding dong, the witch is dead!

All of them make sense expect the 3rd one, if you enjoy heavily compressed video/audio then online streaming is for you. I'll take the high bitrate video/lossless audio from bluray anyday.

I think it will be released, but won't be on store shelves.

Since Vista was RTM: 11/8/06; VL.: 11/30/06; Retail: 1/30/07 I think that windows 7 will come to RTM and VL in November at the earliest, but it won't be "on store shelves" until early 2010.

That I can see.

I agree. For a quick clip and such streaming is fine, but I don't want my whole movie in such low quality.

That I can see.

I have a feeling that Apple will be pushing OS X with service pack 6, I mean their brand new OS 10.6 and MS will want to capture some the holiday season of computer orders with Vista service pack 2, I mean their completely new OS windows 7.

1- BR-DVD will take off as more ISP's will impose caps on downloads, less people will be streaming...
2- AMD/ATI will anounce or release a surprise CPU that will blow the doors off anything Intel has .
3- Micron goes under :( or gets bought out.
4- Apple suffers severe consumer backlash over "god" complex and without fearless leader Jobs, must totally restructure.
5- [H]OCP recognized as first virtual historic landmark.:)

QFT. Physical media means higher bitrates and higher quality than any streamed or downloaded file can provide.

lol I you can sum up the article by saying, "If we state the obvious then we can't be wrong!"

A new PS3 can be had for $250 through Sony's credit card deal; I wonder if this sticks through a $100 price drop.

Why do people continue to suffer from the delusion that people aren't going to want 720p video when most people are quite happy with SDTV? You like 1080p blu-ray? Good for you. a 8GB 1080p rip looks great on my projector. Furthermore, 95% of people will never see a difference between a 720p rip and a 1080p BD because of a combination of viewing distance, calibration, sound system, and most of all, 720p screens.

The top tier is not, and never has been, the choice of anyone but enthusiasts. Right now the standard is SDTV and highly-compressed HDTV. 4GB 720p rips are a huge upgrade to a vast majority of the population.

I'm waiting for a smartphone company to release a dock that plugs directly into a keyboard/mouse and monitor. A lot of smartphone's are capable of running basic windows functions, and as soon as apple or rim has 2 gui's in there phones, i'd be more than willing to ditch a PC or two.

Hey guys! I have teh predictions for teh 2009! And I KNOW I'm right!

1. You will wake up in 2009 (otherwise you wouldn't be reading this).
2. You will get up and walk at least 1 step sometime during the year.
3. You will sleep at some point during the year.
4. You will eat at some point during the year.
5. You will drink something at some point during the year.
6. You will think this list is stupid after reading it.

I think the article needs to be renamed 5 business predictions in the tech industry instead. IMO the lowering price of a console or allowing a cell phone to work with another company is hardly a tech prediction.

I agree, internet streaming is nice if you want to watch something on the go, but if you want the theater quality you don't have it yet with Hulu. As for HD streaming being the way of the future, I agree and disagree. I agree that it will be the standard, but not for a few years. Not everybody had high speed yet. Even if you do have high speed, most people only have a few megs per second for download. that means that people will either have to wait for download and me if I want to watch a movie I don't like to wait. Two if it is streaming, people with lower speeds will always have buffering problems where it stops every few minutes. So until 10 m's internet speed is more affordable and widely available, I don't think it will happen this year. So if people want true HD for now, I welcom blue ray. (i still think most people will be more than satisfied with an DVD Player with HD Upconversion)

I predict i'm going to make a ham & cheese sammich for lunch.

I doubt 3 and 4; the rest are expected. these aren't really anything we don't already know :/

Exactly.

That'd be sweet. Every phone out there is too freaking slow to use as a desktop OS though as well as not enough space, but I could definitely see this as being a viable computing method sometime in the future... Take your computer in your pocket ;)

The whole list is 100% expected. The only thing that may not happen is Jobs announcing his retirement. While it'll probably happen it isn't really known.

Agree with most post about streaming.

Streaming is fine for my little 19" PC monitor... but for the TV, I'd rather have a physical media to watch movies.

And at where I live here, its not possible to stream high quality video without letting it load a huge amount of the video first.

This.

Really though. I think Blu-ray will gain some more ground this year. Not a significant foothold, but slow and steady wins the race eh? Also the whole bandwidth capping crap ISP's are doing will slow down the amount of people streaming.

If you guys are gonna say that, then I have prediction of my own.

If ISPs do mostly go to capping, they will have HELL the pay the next 4 years.

A democrat is now in office, which is always a bad sign for obviously greedy corporations. You may find at&t split up again the next 4 years.

Not only that, but Amazon, Apple, and all the rest of the streaming video companies will end up suing the ISPs.

I think that streaming is the way of the future, but like another post said, it's not quite ready just yet.

Now if they could make a breakthru in lossless compression (i.e., a new format with a better ratio), then that would definitely speed the transition to streaming up.

And now for some real, well thought out predictions from someone who knows what they're talking about. Instead of pretty much just pulling random crap out of a hat to generate hits. (I C WHUT U DID THAR CNET.)

1 - Sun Microsystems will be bought or merged, or possibly go out of business. No matter what, there will be yet another massive restructuring (the second major restructure in as many years) and large layoffs.
2 - Microsoft will lay off a large number (>7,000) employees "due to the economy."
3 - EA, Activision/Blizzard, and other game companies will begin laying off staff due to declining sales and a need to reduce costs.
4 - Sony will take drastic action on the PS3 to try and increase sales; this may be a price cut, improvement of included features (larger HDD, backwards compat, etc,) or a promotion such as 2-5 games included with system purchase.
5 - More ISPs will begin to implement ridiculous caps and aggressive filters ostensibly to "manage" their networks.

If Microsoft's Windows 7 does well this may not happen. But, like history repeats its self people will be to afraid of the new OS and they will stick with xp or vista. With a slowing economy a lot of people will hang on to their old computers, then buy new ones. expect net books to take off because I work at a retail store and everybody wants the same thing in a computer. "I just want to go online and mabe store some photos" This opens up another topic of discussion. Bottom line a depression is going to happen so expect great change next year.

Did you read the rest of the thread?

First off, I bought the Xbox Elite and it cost me around $500 with an extra controller, so by no means cheap. Just got it to play the few games I liked for Microsofts little toy. I have plans on getting a PS3 for both game play and blu-ray. I like having multipurpose products and it saves money and space. I haven't purchased it yet only because of the holidays and I am saving for a house. Plus, I am more of a PC gamer than anything else; xbox sits most of the time...

Secondly, I still don't know why people trash Vista, I don't recall XP being so quickly accepted especially in an IT field because company's like uniformity with their software/hardware and to just replace everything takes time and money.

Finally, what is with the Blu-ray crap that it just hasn't performed well in market share? Does anyone realize how much VHS and Betamax cost when they where introduced? or the original DVD player? Hell, my first CD Burner was $400, just to burn 650MB CDs. This stuff takes time like the price of computers. When technology cost decrease and better production methods are found then lower costs can be found.

Around here, yes.

However most IT folks you meet are generally ignorant when it comes to Vista, which shocked me. They just re-iterate the BS they "hear" and have never really touched it.

The thing is that Blu Ray media and hardware have dropped in price faster than VHS, CD, and DVD did. DVD set-top players and burners were way more expensive than Blu Ray was at the same point in time. And let's not even talk about Laserdisc... Its plenty affordable now and it will only continue to get cheaper.

That you get the absolute best home theater quality ever for this kind of price is a great thing.

I agree, reading through what some posted on CNet is just stupid sometimes, saying Blu-ray will be replaced by streaming? I don't think anytime soon...until our country has data speeds comparable to other countries and can handle everyone streaming this will not happen; hell most ISPs throttle you back for downloading too much data.

I am glad the Blu-ray won and it was a quick adoption and the prices have dropped fasttt.
