First time SFF build looking for direction!

Any thoughts on spending $10 more for this: Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

A reviewer stated: " there is no real performance boost between the sata 3 and sata 2 versions and 32MB cache vs the 64MB cache. its stated that all of these have speeds of 126MB/s.
This document is listed in the details. I did not notice this until after purchasing."

The reviwer is right: When it comes to regular mechanical hard drives, there is no difference between SATA 6.0Gb/s and SATA 3.0Gb/s alone. However, that WD1002FAEX is based on a newer design which allows it to actually outperform its older SATA 3.0Gb WD Black brother. With that said, the Samsung drive I linked to earlier actually performs about the same as that WD1002FAEX hard drive. So no point in getting the WD Black unless you really don't like Samsung.

I, personally, feel that the Thermalright is overkill for anything running on an H67 board as the stock Intel cooler should be sufficient for most needs. If you are running a lot of CPU intensive applications for long periods of time, then maybe to keep the noise down. The 460 will be louder than the stock cooler in most cases, however.
 
Nah good cooling is never bad or overkill, if anything, a bit quieter is good and even a couple of degrees less is good enough to justify the price. Will help overall case temps to be lower
 
Unless you are running high temps for long periods of time, a few degrees makes no difference to the lifespan of the component. It won't be quieter if the 460 fan is louder. Case temps won't be lower unless the airflow through the case is improved. But to each their own if it makes people happy then that's a good thing too.

Maybe, change the fan with a nice PWM 14cm one like this Scythe Slip Stream 140x25mm Fans PWM Adjustable VR. You'll need to find a way to fit the switch for VT to PWM... maybe inside the case set as you wish.

Meh. I have the same CPU/Mobo in a smaller case (SG05) and it never goes over 65C in prime95 with the stock cooler. Its not really necessary and, in fact, the larger mass of metal will impede air flow through the case but it will look cool since it fills the whole mobo. Like I said, if it makes the OP happy, then great. I just hate wasting money where its not necessary.

I agree it is important that the CPU gets sufficient airflow, however, flopticalcube is also correct.
If the 460 fan is louder than the CPU cooler, there is little point is trying to quiet the CPU cooler further.
If, for example the 460 fan generates 40db and the case fan and CPU cooler each generate 30db, the total will be less than 41db (human hearing begins to detect differences greater than 2db).
