First time in SLI

I have a GTX480 and want to get another one for SLI. My current one has the thermalright heatsink installed . Will it be ok to get another 480 and be able to SLI both of them the way it is?

I have never done SLI before so i don't know all that is involved in getting it to work together.
 
Sure, why not? Plug in the 2nd card, connect the bridge to both cards, get into Windows, enable SLI and wait a moment for it to enable and you're done.

Make sure your PSU can handle it. I don't know what wattage and such you would need but I do know that the 480s are very power hungry and running two of them would surely stress your PSU if it's anything under 700W probably
 
The number one thing you need to worry about when dipping your feet into sli is your power supply. It needs to be able to handle two of the most power hungry cards in the market right now. You need a good 700watt psu from a QUALITY manufacturer. I suggest Corsair, Antec, Seasonic, or whatever [H] has deemed worthy.

Secondly, you need a computer case with very high airflow. These are easily some of the hottest gpu's out right now as well, so you need to be able to manage the heat these put out.

I have a Corsair 850 but with an overclocked CPU and GPU along with 9 hard drives i might have to double up my other PSU 700w to feed it safely.
 
Oh god no, a corsair 850watt psu is plenty for 480's in sli with all that other stuff you mentioned
 
Yeah you should be ok power wise. Make damn sure there is a LOT of airflow though. Temps will rise with a second 480.

SLI isn't very complicated. I do uninstall all the video drivers prior to installation though. Just install it to the second PCI Express slot add the SLI bridge and you're good to go. Install the Nvidia drivers and you should see and SLI option to enable and disable it.
 
I overloaded my Strider 1000W running 2 480s in furmark - and that was with an i5 750, 2 hard drived and nothing overclocked.

You could probably get away with an 850 if you run everything at stock speed, but the 480s like to run at 800-850mhz and under load, that could be well over 600W right there.

I suggest you post full specs, at least motherboard and case.

Also, you might consider selling your 480 and going for a 7970

$180 for selling your current 480
$220 you were going to spend on the new 480
$80 it will cost you to sell your current PS and get a more powerful model

For $480, you can get a 7970 and 3 games and your system will run great.

Skip eating out once or twice and you can get a 680...
