First SFF build, have questions

Im trying to put together a SFF out of my current desktop pc to make it easier to haul back and forth to college on the weekends and to make it easier to travel with. My current PC is composed of:

Motherboard: DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D 939
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Mem: Patriot Signature Series 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)
PSU: OCZ ModStream OCZ52012U 520W
HSF: ZALMAN CNPS7000B-AlCu
Video: connect3D 3038 Radeon X800GTO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16
2x 5.25 optical drives
1x 3.5 hdd

The case that I'm looking at that I like is the Lanbox because of the handle on it and it seems to be of good build quality according to reviews. Then hopefully the only thing I would have to change would be the motherboard, is this correct? Any suggestions on a good motherboard for me? I'll update this with anything else that i may be forgetting if I think of it, Thanks for the help!
 
Honestly, buying a new 939 motherboard would be a serious waste of your money.

Why not save a little bit more and overhaul to AM2 (Or 775)?

Are you going to be a freshman? From what I've seen, money is better invested in a laptop (bring your PC to school too) that you can take everywhere with you. That's what I did. I had a nice PC and bought myself a macbook. Never took my computer home from school, just my laptop.
 
agreed you can get that nominal power (by todays standards) from a $800 notebook and get twice the use out of it because its a notebook

Alright, I'd love to do this, from what i've seen that would mean i'd need a motherboard, processor, and memory. Also it looks to me like most people prefer the 775's?
And I don't plan to do any overclocking

Yes, Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs are the preferred CPUs now. If you're on a serious budget, I recommend the following setup:

Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 CPU - $70
Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L Intel G31 mATX Motherboard - $60
G.SKILL F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ 2 x 1GB DDR2 800 RAM - $45
----
Total: $175 plus tax and shipping.
 
939 matx's are gonna be hard to come by... especially one that's comparable to a lanparty

i've got a shutte sn25p (939) that i bought for the same reasons as you. i've since moved out of that and into a full size setup. might be something to consider.

Thanks for that, everything looks good, but i might swing for a better processor, something like an E4600.
 
I would make sure to go with the LANBOX VF1000SWA because it's all aluminum. eWiz had it for $120 + shipping.

Notebook route, isn't a bad idea... Normally people go the SFF route, because they like to tinker with their PC, want to overclock or have some serious hardware requirements. Laptop would seem to be better for you, if you don't upgrade often and aren't going to overclock.

Heh, I rarely look at titles, but you must be one of the oldest active "n00bie"s on here. ;) 4.8 years... that's funny.
 
i'd rather not get a laptop, and now that im seeing the clocks that the e2180 is capable of, ~3.0GHz, lets not rule overclocking out ;)
