Hello !

This is my first post on this forum, but I'm not a total noob in OCing.

I'm planning to buy a new Oc rig, right now this is what I came up with.

cpu e6750
mobo Asus p5k3 deluxe
ram OCZ3P13332GK
HD 2x Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB SATA2 in raid 0(already owning)
PSU Ultra X2 550-Watt(already owning)
Vga asus 8800gts 320mb

I know ddr3 isnt a big performer right now, but I'm expecting the next generation to be alot better than ddr2, so I didnt want to spend alot in my first ddr3 modules, but I want it to be a nice overclocker.

The real big problem is finding a good OCing ddr3. There is not alot information/competition.

I'm not putting too much on the vga card... since next year I'll probably buy a new 1 !!

I really need some conselling.

Thanks for your help.

ps. I know my english sucks, I'm French Canadian !!! woot

Yes DDR3 will be faster than DDR2 in the future BUT right now there is no reason to go with DDR3 RAM. In fact current C2Ds as well as future Yorkfield and Wolfdale CPUs won't even see a benefit from going DDR3.

So basically DDR3 RAM is not worth its costs now especially since DDR3 RAM will be cheaper and faster than DDR2 RAM around later 2008-early 2009. I'm still not sure why you want to go DDR3 in the first place.

So for an alternative motherboard, I recommend the Abit IP35 Pro. It's heavy overclocking mobo according to the reviews I've read. It might fit your needs.

You're right, DDR3 currently has no advantage over DDR2.

On Intel platforms, there is really no point running the RAM faster than the standard 2 x [base FSB speed], especially if it costs more money to do so.

DDR3-1333 implies a base FSB speed of 667Mhz, if keeping a 1:1 Ratio with the CPU. I don't think there is any current board, nor CPU, that can handle a base FSB speed that high. Therefore, DDR3 is useless due to its price premium.

(CPU Multiplier) x [Base FSB speed] = CPU Clock speed
2 x [Base FSB speed] = RAM speed
4 x [Base FSB speed] = Effective FSB speed

On Intel platforms, running the RAM higher than a 1:1 ratio with the CPU is useless. Keep it linked at 1:1:

E6750: 8 * 333 = 2.6Ghz, DDR2-667 << STOCK speeds
E6750: 8 * 400 = 3.2Ghz, DDR2-800 << Easy OC
E6750: 8 * 450 = 3.6Ghz, DDR2-900 << Good OC
E6750: 8 * 500 = 4.0Ghz, DDR2-1000 << Great OC, near max on good cooling

Most Core2 P35 Express boards top out around 500+Mhz.

I believe that by the time DDR3 reaches speeds high enough to make the higher latencies useless, the eaglelake chipset will be out and be the chipset to get for such performance.

If you don't agree with me, but still want DDR3 support AND DDR2 support, go with the Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R instead, and go with some DDR2-667/800 for now.

alot of help in here thanks alot,

enginurd nice explanation btw. So if I resume.... Its useless to go with ddr3 because with a good ddr2 I can get the maximum of my cpu with a 1:1 ratio.

I really wanted to go with ddr3, for the future of it... you know a good investement.

But you guys think its not a good choice... and now I understand.

Can you tell me some good ddr2 memory?

I made some research... and since I really want to obtain 4.0ghz with the e6750,

what about Patriot PDC22G9200ELK ... is it any good

Basically, anything with Micron D9XXX chips can OC like crazy. Here's the ramlist: http://ramlist.ath.cx/ddr2/

If you don't want to deal with the OC'ing the RAM, and just want to focus on OC'ing the CPU, then to get an E6750 to 4Ghz, you'll need some RAM rated for at least DDR2-1000. So, any DDR2-1000 or higher will do just fine.

I heard Abit IP35 Pro is a exellent mobo ddr2 and and excellent OCer.... thanks to Danny

Yes the IP35 Pro is a great OCing mobo but the DS3R OCs pretty well too. The DS3R is around $40 to $50 cheaper than the IP35 Pro. Here's a side by side features comparison of the Abit IP35 Pro and the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R:

And here are couple of reviews for each mobo. Decide for yourself whether or not it's worth it for you:

none of the boards you linked me goes above 500fsb.... I cant achive the 4.0ghz with those.

I fell under the charm of the asus p5k premium... what do you guys think about it?

Well do remember that YMMV. So these guys may not have been able to to go above 500FSB but that could've been due to the RAM they chose or got a CPU that could do no more. Also, there reviewers couldn't get pass 500FSB with the P5K Premium either:

e6750
abit ip35 pro
ram PDC22G9200ELK ddr2-1150, not expensive, no need to oc them, just to be sure to acheve my goal.

Do you think I'm gonna be able to reach the 4ghz barrier with this ?

What about a 4gig ram rig ... you think its worthed?

I need thumbs up!!

Pushing a board to 500+ Mhz fsb requires some work and a lot of luck. Most importantly, it requires good chipset cooling, aside from luck. I don't think any board guarantee's 500Mhz, but your best chances are with the flagship boards of each series: Abit IP35 Pro, Asus P5K Deluxe/Premium (or Blitz), and Gigabyte P35-DQ6. Check with the mobo subforum if they know of a board that can consistently hit such high FSB speeds.

OC'ing, as always is YMMV, as Danny mentioned. There are plenty of factors that go into your own results. You've got to get lucky with the chip AND mobo, since you're getting RAM that will definately run 500Mhz.

4GB is worth it if you need it, don't mind paying for it, and if you can use it all or not. You'll need a 64-bit OS to utilize it all.

What enginurd said.

If you check the C2D OC Database in the Intel subforum here, someone did hit 4.0Ghz with the E6750 with a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme and a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P mobo. But YMMV. Just wanted to throw this out there.

I don't get this fascination with 4.0 ghz. I hope the OP understands that OC'ing is as much about luck as it is skill.

Everything as arrived

Cpu ------------e6750
Mobo ----------ip35 pro
HD -------------2x Caviar 250g Sata II Raid 0
PSU -----------Utra x2 550w flexforce
Memory ------Ballistix Tracer pc8500 2x1g
Coolin' --------Zalman 9700 Nt
Case ----------Antec 900

Everything is up and running

OC right now is nothing much, I'm gathering info right now

CPU 400x7= 2800@1.4
MEM ratio 1:1= 400 5-5-5-12@2.1v

I crank up the voltages to give me enough power to oc a little bit more

I'll paste some Screenshot asap.

Thanks for you help Hardocp'ers! .... you made me an happy man.

nice system! But y go with the ultra psu? get a silverstone or a corsair next time you buy anything. And also for that oc the voltage change is unneeded. And it might lead to your cpu giving off more heat than it should, and also maybe shorting the life span. Put it back to stock volts and then once you hit the fsb wall then increase the volts:D:cool::D. Good luck and get back to us!

I had the ultra psu and since I dont really need more power why change it?!?

Thanks for the advice... I read alot and all the e6750 ocers are around 1.4.. I wanted to save a couple of reboot... But your technic is much wiser.

It's not the issue of more power, it's quality. There is a big push these days for quality, not wattage. But I think you should be fine. Until I do more research that is.

BTW, lillimon04, you missed the fact that the OP already owned the PSU to begin with.

Oh thats a pretty good reason, I hate doing reboots and ocing and then doing it again.

Sorry just thought he would get another psu. But for now its ok.

Hey guys I started to OC my rig

now im at 3.4@1.5v... running prime right now! But I have seen some better ocing with lower vcore.... Is there a setting that I'm forgetting

I know my Ram can't hold me back. 5-5-5-15@1.9 they can reach 542+++

It's possible. But I doubt it.

What happened when you tried 3,.4Ghz on any voltage lower than 1.5?

I started prime95 .... couple test passes... open the browser and the system froze big time.

I also had problem with prime at the first test.

Yah, when priming, thats all you can do, don't bother browsing, lol. Well, I was able to SS, load paint, paste, and save while priming, though, lol. I did all my OC'ing with a RAID0 array, no issues there. This is what my chip did:

VID: 1.35v
2.6Ghz: CPU voltage: 1.35v, MCH and FSB overvoltage: AUTO -- (stock)
3.2Ghz: CPU voltage: 1.35v, MCH and FSB overvoltage: +0.1v -- (orthos stable for 24+ hrs)
3.4Ghz: CPU voltage: 1.42v, MCH and FSB overvoltage: +0.1v -- (orthos stable for 15min)
3.6Ghz: CPU voltage: 1.45v, MCH and FSB overvoltage: +0.1v -- (orthos stable for 15min) (try +0.2 if unstable; you'll need good chipset cooling)
3.8Ghz: CPU voltage: 1.55v, MCH and FSB overvoltage: +0.2v -- (orthos stable for 24+ hrs) (you'll need good chipset cooling)
4.0Ghz: CPU voltage: 1.60v, MCH and FSB overvoltage: +0.2v -- (posted, didnt try windows/orthos) (you'll need good chipset cooling)

These voltages were BIOS settings. The actual voltage according to CPU-Z was a bit less, especially when priming. My temps never went above 60°C during orthos. I used CoreTemp 0.95.4 to measure temps. Ambient room temp was 22°C.

should I increase other voltages.

I've seen ocers increase fsb 0.1 and mch 0.1 ... what about you?

It's really hard to find what are all the modifictions made by ocers. usually we can only find vcore.

Thanks alots man, I'll try to play with that tomorrow (in fact in 7h after work).

I've found someone able to get fsb@500 with e6750
vcore 1.475
ddr 2.20
mch 1.41
ichio 1.55
cpuvtt 1.23
ich 1.12

are those reasonnable?

And where can I find some good info about those voltages and there impact ?

I'm sorry if I ask alot ... I love to know!

Yah, but he most likely had a low VID. My friend has a 1.25v VID, and can reach 4Ghz with 1.55v, orthos stable.

Haven't you heard about the magic smoke? No?!?!? Well, you see, thats how all these chips run: they have magic smoke. The thing is, you have to keep the smoke inside the chip! Once you let it out, the chip no longer works. :( :p I can't tell it as well as older engineers, lol, but you can Google for it, lol.

Higher voltage helps overclock settings be more stable. More voltage means more heat. More heat means you need better cooling, cuz heat kills chips -- it lets out the magic smoke!

Seriously man dont even think about getting the 320 .... I felt sooo bad buying it !!!!!!!!!! AFter a couple of weeks of shit performance i went and bought the 640 and omg the difference is just wild !!!!!!!!!!! I have it overclocked to 685/1026 50 without load and 55 with load

I think u have all the info you need here. I ran prime95 for 7.5 hours I think its clear that its stable.
