first nvidia dual gpu card

So can I now take two of the dual GPU cards and SLI them to get a 4 GPU system?

from what I have read, that card is already using SLI.. it is just built into the card and between the two GPUs on one card. Not an external interface.

although it would be neat if it somehow could have two and you could hook up two of these dual gpu cards
 
This is like a week old, HardOCP already did a news post on it. It does use SLI, it's just all on one card.

Now why didn't someone figure this out before PCIE came out?
 
I think they realsed PCI X is for the SLI mode cards, jsut saying what if they brought one of those dual gpu cards on agp, would pci x be another dying trend for the pc world, would the revert to agp (we have yet to see agp 4x to be a bottle neck for cards) :confused:
 
Yeah I read about this a while ago. It's going to be dual 6600GT chips on a single board and run faster than a 6800 ultra. All still being about the cost of a 6800GT. I think it's an awesome idea for people looking for a better bang for their buck :D
 
The thing with SLI is that it takes a pci-16x gpu and breaks it down into 2 pci-8x gpu lanes.
Since we still haven't been able to bottle neck at 8x we are able to see increases with SLI.
Thats why we are just now seeing dual gpus with one CPU, because AGP by design couldn't be spilt in half.

no no no

First off it's PCI-E, not PCI-X, PCI-X is a whole different standard.

And PCI-E does a hell of a lot more than replace AGP..PCI-E is here to stay, no doubt about it.

And AGP hasn't been a bottleneck because card makers designed around it, nvidia is already using the increased bandwidth of PCI-E with the turbo-memory cards.

Dual core technology sounds like fun on both the CPU and GPU front. I read a lot about the dual core CPU tech in December's issue of Computer Power User.

I had a 2 hour flight and nothing to read so I picked it up at an O'Hare newstand. It was the most interesting mag there that was not pron! I was pleasantly surprised to see an article written by Kyle Bennet inside!

Heat is only the beginning.
You have to consider the amount of power flowing through the card, especially with two GTs.
Plus the ram options, would two Gts on one card with 256 to share do better then 2 seperate cards with 512 total?

I honestly think that nvidia's next high end card will be a dual nv41. nv41 is the 12-pipe pci-e version of the standard 6800. Put two of them together and you have a 24 pipe card. I'm guessing that nvidia will start making cards with more than one sli interface so they can get 4 cores running together. The possible combinations of sli'd cards and sli'd chips on cards is ridiculous.

Doesn't work like that, your still using two cards each with 256 but that doesn't mean they perform like a card with 512 of memory.

Well I think the assumption has to be that a dual-chip card will have 256 megs of ram for each chip. Personally I think that will become extremely difficult, but if you consider the option of doing it with 2 vanilla 6800s, and then having the option of further sli'ing two of those together for a total of 48 pipes...you could have some serious horsepower...and the nv41 chips should produce less heat and require less power than the gt or ultra.

It's already been done with the 6600gt...no reason not to do it with vanilla 6800s...that would be a fast card indeed...

I didn't say they did, but thats still 512mb of total ram. Re-read the sentence.

And to empty above, i doubt we will see 4 gpu sli setups, at least with the current design of PCI-express, cause that would result in each GPU running at 4x lanes (4x times 4 =16x express), so the performance increase (if any) wouldn't warrant the extra cost.
 
You can currently get a graphics solution with 1GB DDR3 on it. Two Quadro 512MB cards in SLI. So why not 512 on one dual GPU card? It would need a real HSF instead of all the decorative ones that are out now.

nVidia couldnt "enable" it before PCI-E. Dual GPU's arent supported with AGP.

The PR I've seen so far only shows the 6600gts winning in 3dmark03. Some people take that as a "OMG THE L33T!!!11!". But thats one benchmark, and its not even the most stressing. Its a good idea for those still on CounterStrike and WC3, but the PR basicly says that 2 SLI cards are what you need for Doom 3 and Half Life 2.
 
Several things I want to point out before someone decides to buy one of those:

1. Having dual core doesnt mean success...it just means that the industry has failed to produce faster processors, so they slap on 2 of them to make it seem that they are still sticking to Moore's Law.. If you look at historical examples, RAGE MAXX and Voodoo5 both are considered failures by the industry

2. Real SLI will be able to power 4 screens, not 2

3. Depends on how much money gigabyte wants to charge for it, a 6800GT might actually be better

The PR doesnt say anything about Doom3 or HL2. How is it a good idea for people playing CS? Typically they have low systems. Virtually any system within the past several years can get max frames in that game.

While Gigabyte claims that the 3D1 will trump the performance of Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition and the GeForce 6800 Ultra cards, it says that the card will be offered in combination with the mainboard GA-K8NXP-SLI for less money than ATI's and Nvidia's single-GPU graphics cards alone.

The only "proof" they have shown is a crappy synthetic benchmark. Who is going to buy a setup like this, and run it in 1024x768? I hope I am wrong, but I dont see how it can be faster than either card, at 1600x1200, especially with AA/AF. Until benchmakr come out to prove me wrong, I wont believe any amount of PR they spew.

2x6800U would be interesting on one card. It would probably be super long, and put a lot of stress on the PSU, and have a huge heatsink prodcuing a lot of heat. Still would like to see it.

This card looks interesting to say the least.
 
I know that the dual 6600GT is more than likely not faster than a single 6800U with AA and AF cranked up in the latest games...

I'm just intrigued that this was possible...and it's possible to further combine two dual gpu cards...like that would be fricking amazing...so....much....power....!!!

That would be cool, a dual GPU SLI boards.......I see Hardware of the Year(next year) if it comes out...
 
if voodoo 5 wasn't a failure(compared to NVidia's TNT2 and GeForce), 3dfx wouldn't have gone out of business...
 
while on the topic of failures, about that Geforce FX series...

And anyways, half of what I've read in this post is bashing the dual gpu card. It scores 14,000 in 3Dmark and people are making fun of it? Trash 3DMark all ya want, it is still idicative of a card's power.

Anyways, half of the hate for the card is from people who just dropped $400+ on a new card and don't wanna see something better coming out already. sheeeeeesh :rolleyes:
