First ground up computer build ....

Actually there is a way to do mirror your drive onto a SATA drive but you'll still run into the same problem since you're still essentially moving an OS install between two motherboards and that rarely works well in my experience. Though if you just want to hook your IDE drive as a second data drive and not as a bootable OS drive, then it will be fine.

The motherboard comes with SATA cables. So no real need for a retail drive.

I suppose that is true. I just want to be able to access the programs on that drive because there are some programs without disks. So it doesn't necessary need to be bootable just accessible.

So the IDE hdd and the NEC dvd drive can be plugged into the IDE port on the mobo, and the SATA hdd into the SATA port on the mobo. Correct?

I wasn't aware that the mobo came with SATA cables, that will help looking for an inexpensive OEM drive.

Do they usually come with more than one cable for the SATA hdds?

thanks for your help :)

I know that some of these questions answer themselves, I just like second opinions.... :)

Thanks for the answers. I'm sure that I'll have more when the build starts to take shape. I'll probably just keep adding on to this thread so I know where all the answers are. :D

Hey all....

I almost have everything for the build.

It's as follows:

Case: Cooler Master 690

Processor: Intel Q6600 G0 stepping

Ram: G.Skill 4GB kit

PSU: Corsair TX 650

Mobo: Gigabyte P45-DS3R

Hard drive: Maxtor 500GB SATA (I have another, it's good and in a Retail box. I don't trust OEM hard drives, (personal taste.) )

Graphics Card: Likely an EVGA 8800GT (haven't gotten it yet and not getting a 4850, going to stay Green and upgrade later.)

Total: About $830 before Rebates, slightly over my budget by a couple hundred dollars, but I think that it's a good rig and It's Completely Upgradeable! Unlike the Dells. :)

Anything that I've missed? :)

How much will the Maxtor drive cost you?

Well I already bought it, and yes I do realize that the WD 640GB that's being recommended is faster/better etc., but I couldn't find a Retail boxed one for what newegg has it for, $84.99/free shipping.
So to answer your question, $79.99/free shipping at Frys and to be honest, I don't really need more than that 500gb.

Maxtor? oohh... I hope thats a rebadged seagate. :p

Ya, ya. I know Maxtor isn't all that popular around here. I believe my other Maxtor 500gb I got from Frys last year was a re-badged Seagate. :p

It's done right by me. :)

Finished the build last weekend. Runs great. Nice and cool.

It's nice to play UT3 at 2048x1536 and play Crysis at respectable speeds, 1600x1200 and higher. Bioshock finally plays, and at 2048x1536. :D

No pics, sorry.
