I've been severely out of the loop on PC hardware since roughly 2007, I'm brand agnostic for both CPU and GPUs but do require hardware scalling in my GPUs since the last 2 monitors I've used didn't support it.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

Gaming. FPS, graphics intensive RPGs, racing, RTS, Space Sim (Eve, Jumpgate) Current system will likely be re-purposed as primarly a media server and XP and older multi-boot gaming box. My steam folder is kinda huge so a pretty fast high capacity drive will be needed there.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Sub $1500 w/o monitors if possible pre-tax/shipping
3) Where do you live?
Northern, MN
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
Case, CPU, Air Cooling, GPU(s), MoBo, RAM, Optical drive, Hard disks, PS, Cables.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Mouse, audio devices
6) Will you be overclocking?
Not initially until everything's stable and the build is solidified, but yes, at that point I would like the option with air cooling. Processor should be capable at stock settings, I'm not an OC fetishist, I'll take what I can get out of it, but OC'ing shouldn't be the be all end all consideration.
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
20" 1680x1050 initially. This system needs to be capable of driving up to 3x 24" 16:10s though once I settle on a good one.
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Starting late this month unless there's a very compelling reason price or tech wise to wait. No more than 3 months though.
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
Lots of SATA ports, minimum of 6. I'm guessing Crossfire or SLI will be necessary because of my graphics goals. Well supported BIOS/drivers for when I'm set to OC.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
No, planning to run 64bit Win7

Which games do you like to play? Which games do you plan on playing in the future?

How far do you intend on overclocking your processor?

How many SATA ports would you need?

I'll take what I can get, stability is my primary concern over stupidly bleeding edge speeds that require exotic cooling. I'm coming from a Venice Opti 165 that's running 2500 on air with stock cooling and has been for the last 3 years.
How many SATA ports would you need?
6 at the minimum.

OP updated with info as well.

Wow, that case is great, even coming from a CM Stacker 810! Might grab 2 since my girl is making noise about wanting a desk top.

One concern I have is with the XFX card. When I was spec'ing my last build, XFX was kind of on most people's shit list. Have they turned things around, or is it worth looking at some of the other brands like the Sapphire even if there is a price premium?

XFX is now one of the premier video card manufacturers for ATI and Nvidia cards. Significantly better than Sapphire.

With the reading I've done since yesterday, I'd say your approval is well placed. Last thing before I start pulling triggers: is that PS capable of running a second 5870 should I decide to go that route when prices drop?

no it can't. Not sure, but i THINK a 620w is recommended for a single 5870

No, but you could easily buy a good 850 watt PSU, like the Corsair HX850, around the time that you buy the second HD 5870. (Just save a bit more money to buy everything in one trip.)

XFX and VisionTek are the only ATI companies I know of that offer lifetime warranty, and XFX has notably better customer support than VisionTek.

And yah, you'll want a beefier PSU if you go CFX HD 5870. Though, I agree with tiraides, just get it when you actually go CFX, and sell the old one to help offset the cost.
