It's going to be used for gaming, some photoshop and downloading and burning. I have optical drive, hard drive, monitor, keyboard and mouse already. Trying to stay under $600 for the rest.

The only parts I've ordered are Patriot DDR-800 2gb and some yate loon fans and I'll most likely go with the Cooler Master C690 mid tower case.

I first started looking at the intel e6750 but now i'm thinking maybe i should go with amd because I've never overclocked before and i'm scared I might mess something up.

frys has this deal on amd 6000+ and k9a mobo,

as for graphics card I know the 8800 series is the way to go but do you think it's ok if I go with a 8600 and go sli later or maybe x1950 and go crossfire later, if so which one.

So, whats included in that $600 budget? How much of it have you spent already, on the ram and fans?

What parts do you have already, specifically? Are those drives SATA or IDE? etc..

OC'ing is easy. You change two settings in the BIOS for a modest/easy OC and you're done.

For photoshop, you'd best be served by a Q6600 and 4GB of ram.

For video, go with the X1950GT for $115 and upgrade when you need to. No, Crossfire/SLI is not a good upgrade path. Sell the old card and pickup a newer gen card for better performance.

stay far away from the 8600s. look at the performance charts, they really are terrible.

also, good point on the HDs. newer gen mobos only have one ide channel.

4 gigs of ram and a q6600 is kinda overkill imo for your average photoshop tinkerer, especially if he wants to get a nice video card. I'd much rather start off with an e6xxx/8800gts than a q6600/x1950 for gaming.

so two 8600 doesn't compare to 1 8800?

FYI, two 8800GTS' in SLI barely beats a single GTX. SLI is only worth it if you need more performance than the fastest single card solution can offer. And that performance is only needed for super high resolutions of 2MP or higher.

RESEARCH! RESEARCH! RESEARCH!
Im doing my first build and I have been researching stuff for over 2 months. The best thing you can do is just read articles all over this forum, and other forums. There are plenty of tutorials out there. BTW go with the 8800, or read some paged reviews on each video card your thinking of buying and then decide which you think is best for you.
