Hi Hardforum

So, the other day I totally messed up and bought a Firebox (for music recording) without realizing that my mobo didn't support firewire :confused:

This is the product

I looked for a firewire input and couldn't find it; after doing research I found out my mobo didn't support it :eek:

So right now, my question is: Can I buy a soundcard to fix this problem. I'm not educated on the matter, but my guess is if I can get some sort of sound card (PCI-E?), it would allow me to use firewire via it. Is this true? And if so, recommendations for products (on Amazon preferably) would be highly appreciated :)

What specific Gigabyte z68 board do you have? There are 20 different models of them, and over half do have a 1394 Firewire header.
 
If you need to buy a firewire card make sure it uses the Texas Instruments chipset to avoid issues with your Firebox.

No. You will need a separate firewire card

It's got a PCIe interface and comes with a TI chipset, so it should be what you need.

If you prefer a PCI card, you might have a look at this one:

I think I'm going to wait for a confirmation on Danny's statement! If what he says is true, the sound card isn't going to help :confused:

Confirmed. Sound card is completely irrelevant to this. Get a firewire card.
 
Well this is depressing :(

I bought the card. Installed it into a PCI-E slot. did the drivers and everything. But after I plugged my firebox in, the computer didn't recognize it. There was no 'sound effect' or any recognition pop up. The weird thing is that the front of my case has a firewire input and the computer detects that (and gives me the 'this usb port not recognized' error) but I'm assuming that is irrelevant b/c I'm assuming the firewire card only adds firewire capabilities to, well, the card output (in the back). Besides, I used to get the same error even before my firewire card was installed, so it probably means nothing , maybe the computer is just confused =/

I took some pictures showing my card installed on my mobo, and the way it looks from the back of the computer with my firebox firewire cable plugged in. I have no idea what's going on, help would be super greatly appreciated, thanks hardforum

I am a FireWire noob, but it looks like you have plugged the box into an unpowered 4 pin firewire port.

Try using the port on the left.

I am guessing "the card" refers to the firewire card.

I am talking about the Firebox, which you plug into the firewire card.

The Firebox needs power from somewhere, either an external adapter or a 6 pin firewire port.

If you do not use an adapter and the Firebox is plugged into a 4 pin firewire port, it will not power on and windows will not have anything to detect.

Ohh. I see. Gotcha :)

The Firebox is actually powered. There was a plug that came with it. I can tell it's powered because a green light shows up

OK, then my 2 cents wasn't worth much.

Hope you can figure out why it isn't working.
 
My friend came over the other day and thankfully found the problem. Thanks for the help anyways Hardforum

In case anyone was curious about the fix:

The drivers were incorrectly setup. It defaulted into using a driver that was neither the TI driver or the Legacy driver, both of which would've worked. Once that was changed the box was recognized; from that point is was just installing the Firebox drivers. :)
