I have noticed that my firefox is bloated in so much as how much ram it uses. it's an insane amout. I'm thinking that it is due to my plugin's but it seriously slows down my whole system
any thought's or ideas, I really like firefox and all it does I don't really want to go back to the bland IE I know I could use more MEM as I only have 512. anything else?

i have the same problem. Im useing 1.5 rc3 and its even more of a mem hog.

Whats worst is i cant download with any version on ff without a sd card in my card reader. It says i have no harddrive to save too if i dont have it in there. Its very annoying.

It looks like a memory leak, I wasn't paying attention and left FF on for a while. I randomly look at task manager and notice it using 500mb ram LOL

I love 2gb..

in bad times mine uses 200mb. I think ff has always been a memory hog tho..no problems with 1 gig tho

Minimize Firefox, then tell me how much memory it's using. ;) Minimizing firefox should dump your memory usage to around 4MB.

The main reasons for the large memory usage are badly behaved extensions & the XUL cross-platform framework.

I'm using the current RC1.5c version and with a blank tab it is using about 17mb, opening a site other then this one in that tab bumps it up to 20-21mb while this site bumps it up to 34mb (36 with two other sites up in additional tabs). If I minimize the FF window the memory usage stays the same. Right now with 2 instances of FF open (one on HardOCP Home and one in the forums to write this) it's using almost 39mb.

Firefox is known to have memory leaking issues. When you close it out and load Firefox again, it'll usually come back to normal. Then again, Internet Explorer does the most basic stuff just as easily and is better than Firefox in terms of stability (runs on several threads rather than single). If one Firefox window freezes, the entire Firefox browser with your 18 windows will go down. It isn't so for IE.

Whoa, that has definitely not been my experience. When IE windows crash, you lose every other IE window, and anything else you have open in Windows Explorer (browsing drives, control panel, etc.) One reason I switched was that I was tired of some parts of Explorer crashing and bringing down everything else. Firefox isn't that great at it either. When one part of Firefox crash, everything else Firefox does too.

looks like I'l be looking for Black Friday deals on not only a new HDD, ( mine is approaching the 3-year mark) but some cheep DDR to. Does anybody know can you order from compusa online and get the BF deals? as I only have office maxx, BB and staples here.

I think usually the good stuff happens in store. Though there might be some online deals. You could also try the For Sale/Trade forums here, you might be able to get some cheaper memory there.

Then I assume you aren't a tweaker. ;) Do this: Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View Tab -> Click on "Launch folder windows in a separate process". This option enables any type of explorer window to be based on several threads so Windows will treat each explorer window as a different program. Perhaps let me know how it goes this time. I am sure Firefox has tweaks you could do but you can find them on Google.

I've had problems with that. I'm talking about not being able to open folders after a while after bootup. It was really annoying. I switched it back to the default setting and have had no problems since.

Firefox 1.0.* has some memory leaking issues that add up over time. 1.5 fixes a lot of those issues. Some preference tweaking in your about:config menu will lessen the memory leaking even more. These tweaks are well-documented: I like config.trim-on-minimize and broswer.cache.memory.capacity the most.

However, the real culprit in Firefox's memory leak is the Flash plugin. Josh Aas (IIRC) is working with Macromedia to fix that and optimize performance.

Which is why you use the SessionSaver extension :D
If the power goes out, firefox crashes or anything, then next time you open firefox all the sites tabs/windows I had open come back at the state they were in when it crashed. This includes the location of the navigation bar on the right, and the forward/back buttons.

edit: I usually have like over 30 windows/tabs open at once, and that takes up like 230mb of ram after awhile. I just tried that minimizing thing, and it went from 100 to 10mb, but then the memory usage just kept rising even while it was minimized.

It seems that the more sites I visit that use Flash based advertising the quicker it eats memory. When working on websites that don't use advertising my mem usage hangs around 50mb (lots of tabs for different pages to quickly check changes). Then I visit a site during my lunch break ([H], etc.) and the memory will spike to over 100mb in a matter of minutes.

Currently I am on 212mb, but my machine has been on since Thursday...

I'm at 196mb when the machine peaks every two minutes, and I use a lot of security related services that run all of the time along with my mail program which checks four accounts every two minutes. That's the peak. Otherwise, it runs at a consistent 195mb. with the basic "run-always" services, plus Firefox. It would be interesting to know what other people have running when they have memory issues. I have a full gig of physical RAM, so memory isn't an issue for the most part. Still, I see a lot of HijackThis logs, and I am surprised that a lot of machines out there run at all.

Without Firefox running, it works at 171mb.

Firefox uses 24mb here with four tabs that are open to random sites. All four have flash running. Mine is version 1.0.7, and it has been heavily tweaked for performance. It also has a lot of extensions, however. Some of those may actually create a performance hit, but I am not removing them out of curiosity to find out.

Firefox works for me. :)

MMmmm.... Opera 8.50.... nice...

I know you are new. In fact, everyone knows you are new.

The thread happens to be about Firefox.

I may have a low post count on here, but I ain't no noob. :p

I made a reference to Opera as I read this thread as "Firefox is memory hungry". I then noticed people pointing to IE as an alternative. So I naturally added a third way. Opera is very good with it's memory requirements. It's not to cause a flame war, just to add it into a serious discussion about resources.

I also couldn't resist a Monty Python quote... but I think that may of gone over a few people's heads. :D

Hmm, just to make sure. For each image that occurs on a web page, does that count as "memory"? Example: an image of 256 kb = takes 256 kb of your RAM? Interesting. :)

The Firefox tweaks are good but sometimes mine will go bonkers and run 99% CPU continuously and requires to kill the entire program. I've seen this happen since the 1.02 version.

Good idea on the extension but adding extensions and modding everything isn't something I like since I run 7 computers in this house. It's just a time-consuming thing. Opera on the other hand has that extension built in. It just does it automatically. Automatic is a good thing.

Ah - it's not spam... It was an accurate prediction of the response I expected from mentioning Opera. :D I am not here to cause trouble, just add in a sensible comment about Opera's good behaviour with resources. Especially as the same program gets used in mobile phones, it is very polite with it's needs. ;)

I was just trying to do it in one line, and hoped to avoid sideways arguments as to which is the better browser as that is purely personal preference. :D

Yeah that's the only time I ever have to restart firefox. I've noticed any animation on a website (flash, gifs) will increase CPU usage. So, get rid of some of that animation (close some windows?) and CPU usage should go down. However there have been times where I'd try to close a window and firefox would be unresponsive for like 30 seconds before the window closed. So I'd usually just restart firefox then.

I donno what some of you are talking b/c my fire fox is only using 89mb and ive got 9 tabs open and most plug ins.

Some of us have over 30 windows/tabs open at once and leave the computer on for days :)

Right now I'm at 34 windows/tabs with 122mb memory usage. System was only on for 15 minutes though. It'll get over 200 if I leave it on for a few days.
