I just ordered this stuff:

SN45G
Mobile 2500+ barton
2x256 OCZ EL PC3700 CL 2.5-4-4-7 2T
WD800JB

And I have an MSI Ti4200 that I've never used a friend gave to me that I hope works. Otherwise I'm stuck with a GF2 I've never used.

I plan on upgrading from all the stock cooling soon and go for some OC fun and mods, but I need the basics to get it going first.

I hope I can get good fsb+timings at 2.5V with that ram assuming the SN45G is a v.2 (which the mobo fries if you change the vdimm)
I read a few reviews on it where they tested at 2.5V, one stable at 215fsb and 2-2-5-2 timings and another was somewhere under 210fsb duno the timings. Another review I read for the non-EL PC3700 went to 227fsb at 2-2-5-2 at 2.5V. I figure its a gamble but the cost wins it over since it would cost the same for anything less (this ram is tested to run PC3200 JEDEC spec along with its own speed).

Phoned a few places to check if they could take a peeky into an SN45G to tell me if they had v.1 stock but nope nope nope and nope. Duno if its any good that Vibecomputers has 2 week old SN45G stock though :p

Time to play real games, and do real work, and see real graphics :)

Oh yeah, I'm not planning on using floppy/cdrom drive. I plan on saving images of any CDs I need then removing the CDROM and mouting the images to a virtual drive. CD drives are too bulky and old, Ew ;)

Think I'll convert my old rig to some nix distro, maby try using it as a firewall or get a webserver up in w2k or nix.

Why god....why do people keep buying OCZ? When will they learn???? (See sig)

Well, if you get your memory and it doesn't run stable at it's stock speeds, then you'll know what I mean. The reviews you read about OCZ....probably were paid off by OCZ to reflect positive results. I'd return it immediately and buy some better memory...atleast some that passes the integrity test.

How have you come to this conclusion that OCZ is crap? I didn't just blindly jump on the OCZ SUCKS bandwagon and get hyperX or corsiar. Jeez man, paid off by OCZ wtf. People in forums too? What about guarantees??

Maby you did buy OCZ at one time and on your setup it didn't run to spec or was a bad stick, you can't say that about thousands of other ones.

Plz tell me your reasoning instead of calling me an idiot basicly.

whats that? skinlab uses OCZ? omg noob, it doesnt work

sorry, I should just disregard and not be an ass myself

on another note, avg is owning HD#3 as we speak, can't wait to pick up new rig

bleed3r, where did you order your CPU from? I've had trouble finding the mobile XP around thses parts.

I grew up in PoCo.

Do me a motherF'n favor and do some research before you make yourself look like a fool.

And no, I'm not going to stop preaching about OCZ. I'm not one of the norm...the spineless consumer who buys products from companies like OCZ, thereby telling them their criminal activites are ok and acceptable. Fuck that and the people who are too stupid to realize consumer fear of being ripped off is why our economy fucking sucks.

Personally, I don't like the idea of giving up my floppy or cd-rom. Why? Because you don't really gain anything, and you only save $10 for a floppy and $20 for the cd-rom. So me, it's just not worth it.

If your main goal is OCing, I wouldn't go with a shuttle. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it will be more work, especially if you want custom cooling, etc.

Upgrade that video card ASAP.

Also, I would go with diferent RAM for a couple of reasons:

1) You don't need PC3700, PC3200 with tighter timings will still allow you to overclock and will give you better performance in games.

2) Although I have no personal experiences with OCZ, I've heard a lot of bad stuff about them from different people. For me, there isn't any reason to buy from them, when I can get the same thing from Corsair or Mushkin, both of which have great reputations.

Gonna have to agree with the OCZ overhype. Over the five years I've been coming here, I have heard lots of horror stories, and other respected review sites have echoed the same things. The only places I have read good reviews for it were admittedly on the OCZ payroll in some form -- and were not trusted sites in the first place.

Hey, if it works for you, great! Post about it and that'll be step one to a new image for the company. We're not knocking your purchase, just saying it's not what we would have done because of our personal experience. I don't think there are fanboys for other companies either - most people recommend Crucial, Corsair, Geil, Kingston and Mushkin. . . that's hardly a "fanclub" for a single brand.

Anyway, good luck with the build and let us know how it goes man! You're gonna love the upgrade.

I absolutely love my Shuttle, but I couldn't agree more with that. at stocks speeds, under normal usage, the Shuttle's cooling system does just fine. My temps are always very good. However, there just isn't room for bigger HSFs, extra fans, etc that typically go into an OC'ed computer. If overclocking is what your after, get a nice Lian Li case, which are cheap these days, and you'll have plenty of room to do as you please.

djnes, I can't find anything about OCZ w criminal activities. What do you mean about this. Consumer fear of bering ripped off? Are you just saying that OCZ are criminals because of false advertising or something? Sorry, I don't want to argue, I'd just like you to explain.

All I can find are some things in googles cache from around a year ago like: "Some recent events surrounding OCZ have risen which have alarmed myself. But first, let’s discuss a little background of OCZ: OCZ is a company with a blemished past with all sorts of bad conduct in the business area. Bad memory modules, bounced checks, and a slew of other horror stories, have all emanated from this company at one time or another. However, I was fooled when I heard of “The new OCZ”; which supposedly, the new CEO would improve the company, and their standings within the industry. Unfortunately, that isn’t exactly the truth, per say."
Also something about scandal/bashing on a mad onion forum which doesn't seem to exist now.

I don't think there can be that big a problem with OCZ whatever you guys think. But if there is a problem I don't think its nothing that can't be dealt with. Alot of people do use OCZ and don't have problems. If all OCZ ram had problems, the stores would get too much shit about them and stop selling them. The place I order from is very loyal and like I said how I requested the mobile bartons and they shipped them in. The point is, they would not sell such a bad product if it were the case.

EnderW: I just don't want the added weight and look. Just my preference. I never use floppys and only cds to install things. I'll probly get an external burner eventualy, but I don't burn many cds.

And I went with the PC3700 over some PC3200, since this is tested at the JEDEC standard too, and can hopefully run pretty decent. How far it will go at 2.5V will give me a better fsb OC. In the end if I just got this at 400ddr with not bad timings it is not a waste. 2-2-2 ram would have been more spensive. I also like the fact that I might use this ram in another machine sometime and have the bandwidth.

I am excited about the whole system, the mobile barton, the sn45g, the hd, and the ram is right up there. I can't wait to try it out and see how it goes. No doubt I'll post about it.

If you guys wanna share anything about OCZ and whats wrong with them let me know. I'm just ignorant, I can't find much, doesn't look like that big a deal, so I just wanna keep it cool now

bleed3r - You must not have been into computes very long if you consider OCZ fiasco to be "not a big deal".

They've ripped customers off for years, and continue to do so. Their first owner changed names and physical locations almost weekly to avoid angry customers and BBB officials. He's currently being sued left and right and is in a world of shit. Shawn something is his name I think. Then they pretty much disbanded and everyone though it was over. After a while they pop up again...allegedly under new management. They continued to sell shit and remarked products, and continued to rip people off and avoid detection by moving around. Their memory is given failing grades by every major publication. For god's sake, MaxPC couldn't get a handful of their latest products to run at any of it's stock speeds stable. Many MANY sites have admitted accepting bribes in order to give them a positive review.

I've done case studies on them during some of my business classes when I was an undergrad at Drexel. They were in the goddamn textbooks. How can people not be aware of this? And furthermore, how can people justify spending money on products with such a shady outlook, from a company that may be the most notorious company EVER in technology? How???

Thats more like it djnes. Thanks for the info. Your right that most people don't really know why OCZ is crap except the occasional person that figures out that it's his RAM that is causing his troubles and posts it here.

most recent thing I can think of is their silver compound "accidently" didnt contain ANY SILVER AT ALL.

Yeah, I guess your right. I guess he figured I alone had a problem with OCZ. Makes sense for the vast majority of rants on here.

I'm making it my mission in life (well, my internet life) to educate people against buying OCZ.

would be sad if u didnt, happened less than 2 months ago ;)

anywho, my ocz runs fine, but im sure im not the exception to the rule
although, it doesnt like to run asynch with the overclock i have.
i had to bump up the voltage to 2.85 on it and everything is fine. if i hadent id be playing (tried 1942 and ut2k4) and it would boot me to desktop.
rebooted, bumped ddr voltage as well as cpu voltage. but today i dropped back on cpu, and played, and it worked fine.

/me awaits a rant by djnes

What about all the resellers? They would not sell such non-working shit. All the people who use it?

The first owner is irrelevant and if he is being "hunted down" as of now, what does it matter to current OCZ?

They continued to sell shit and remarked products, and continued to rip people off and avoid detection by moving around.
Still not getting how a company can move around, and operate, while producing and selling products, changing hqs in the us, canada, and the uk. Still dont get how they could have changed weekly at the begining either.

If it's so crap, and it's such a criminal company that is evil, then I'm sure there would be mass info all over the place, and "WARNING DO NOT BUY THIS" stickied all over the place and they would be closed down.

You didn't really give me any evidence. Without that I can't differenciate between a biased opinion. Please dont just call me a noob and say that I don't know anything about computers. You know nothing about me. The fact that I don't know some unproved stories about a brand of ram means nothing. Can you give me any evidence? Besides some reviews of ram that didn't go to spec, unless you prove that OCZ will sell it to you and guarantee nothing, no rma. What about your textbook you said OCZ was in. Is this just something actualy published or made by an instructor?

Really, let me know, because if OCZ is so bad I obviously don't want it and I'll cancel the order. Just that right now, I don't see how it could be. I'm keeping an open mind. I'm not pro-OCZ or anything, I haven't even tried it yet!

Oh and kron, about the silver compound, you didn't include that they recalled them all for all who sent in and replaced it with another product I forget, and officialy appologized. It was the fault of the manufacturer that was producing it for them apparantly. It just shows when you sarcasticly write "accidently" how you have a narrow mind and don't look at the big picture. Why would they intentionaly not put silver in it? Think nobody would find out?

Well, you can take this anyway you want it and put whatever worth on it, but I take djnes at his word. If he says he read about OCZ in his colllege textbook, I beleive him.

They may be making ok stuff now, but at one time they were ripping people off left and right. In my book, they won't get any off my business, even if they are hella cheaper than the competition with the same exact product. Once a sheister, always a sheister.

I don't care about the past. If it works as it says it doesn't matter IMO

I heard the Hitler family is opening some theme parks. I guess we should get tickets now. :D

Long story short on all this: they have been a terrible company in the past, and at times when they appeared to be cleaning their act up, they were only doing it so they could get something else behind your back. That's why there is no "redemption" for them for most people who have been on these forums for a while -- not to call us, non-noobs or anything, it's just that we have read the personal stories here as well as followed the news.

If you order, you order; if you don't, you don't. You have the opinions and I'm sure djnes will be able to tell you where to go to get more. I think everybody needs to calm down, stop attacking each other's stories, and just take one established opinion for another. Bleed3r, he wouldn't be warning you if he didn't care, he's got no personal beef with the company! ;)

Damn, I was replying when I got a hardware error :p

Anyways, yea good post AR. I either order or I don't.

Oh yeah, about the no redemption thing, I can see how that would be. But it doesn't make a valid point to me for why not to buy OCZ, since it is purely opinional and not factual evidence.

If I picked apart an opinon, its cause I was just looking for proof. But with not much clairity I am holding my decision and not backing down on it.

Even if it works great when I get it, some peoples opinons are solid and won't change. That's fine.

I'm kinda sketchin now, all wondering if this is going to be a huge problem for me or not. Thx alot guys ;)

If you still want to provide me with anything that would say that my ram wouldn't run to spec, including the JEDEC pc3200 standard it is also tested on, please let me know. And if OCZ doesn't help out let me know. I have seen reps like oczguy at some other forums help out people and help get things switched up for them, so it would seem that support would be good but its not for sure.

In the end, I'm kind of releived that my reseller is very loyal and I have given them quite a bit of business, so if it all goes to hell they would help hopefully.

<----------------------------------->
(This is completely unrelated to the OCZ stuff)
But last thing about that Hitlers family kind of completely unrelated. Relatives to hitler, saying that they would be anything like him is prejedice. Such relation would be no different saying that since hitler was german, that all germans are nazis, or that if so and so's dad was a murdurer that deems him one too. I duno if you were implying sarcasm that my point "I don't care about the past" is wrong (your own opinon), but if that means that the theme parks would be evil or something then it is prejedice like I said b4. Though I know you were just trying to make some connection to my point to give your own opinion, that is just a bad example and I know you didn't intend it like that
(unless it is known or something that hitlers descendants are all nazis?? then completely disregard this :D )

I'm just saying that one can trust djnes. I personaly wont deal with OCZ because of the facts about them being a shady business. They hurt real people like you and me. I could care less if they make good stuff now or not. I will reward the decent manufacturers that make reliable products and conduct business in a honest manner.

To be honest with you, I would purchase Crucial over all the rest followed by Corsair, Mushkin, or Kingston equally. Why Crucial, it's because they are the only US manufacturer of RAM chips and DIMMs. I wouldn't buy OCZ if it cost 1/4 the price of the others. Just my two cents.

And you are correct about opinions. They are like assholes, everyone has one.

And to elaborate on the Hitler parable stated above. I think his point is that to us as a [H]ard enthusiest community, the way OCZ screwed over all those people in the past, makes them the devil forever.

I think I'm being pulled to the dark side :p

Yes I trust djnes is telling the truth. It wouldn't make sense if anyone did want to lie about stuff like the textbook and stuff in college business classes. I don't think he would lie about stuff, but that doesn't mean I couldn't question why, i.e. how could they move around/details about the textbook etc.

And I think its a great idea to support crucial and such, but so much of everything in our everyday lives is foreign made anyways. Kind of diapointing.

Anyways, I don't mean to be personally hurting the community by getting ocz products. It just came down to the product and thats it, and thats all I'm concerned about. I'm still in high school with no job, so price is everything. I'd love to support good companies, and I most likely will when a difference of $20-$50 wouldn't matter to me. As you can see, I'm upgrading from a PII

Bitch bitch bitch wow you are all a bunch of fucking wankers. Congrats on the new rig I'm sure you'll be very happy with it. SFF's rock man hope you enjoy.

btw, I think I AM going to cancel the OCZ ram today. I don't want to gamble how well it will do at 2.5v. I know its supposed to be approved for pc3200 standard, but it doesn't really specify if at 2.6v or 2.5v.

I'm gonna put down a few more bucks and get some Corsair 3200LL. Prolly only a 512 stick though; I don't think I will notice the 3-5% increase in performance in dual channel, and a single stick has better chance to OC (and I'd rather have fun with some more fsb to play with than a little performance boost from dual channel) To buy 2x256 (2 seprate or pack) would cost another $15-20 anyways over the 512 stick. And with just a 512 stick, I could in the future get another stick of 512 pc3200LL.

I'm not wimping out or anything cause I think OCZ is gonna suck and I got r0x0r3d, its only cause the 2.5V of the SN45G. In the worst situation if I got that ram, the min voltage tested could have been 2.6V at ddr400, and I would be maby screwed to return it if I couldn't hit 200mhz+ and not bad timings at 2.5V.

Now case closed for OCZ!

/awaits SC vs. DC argument
;)

Trying to get back ontopic here...

Where can I read up on the fact that using anything other than 2.5V on an SN45G fries the board? I'm looking into getting one, and I don't exactly plan on running at 2.5V. Thanks in advance.

If you get a v.1, vdimm is a go

v.2 botched it up

So, if you find a v.1 from some old stock somewhere maby, your in luck!

You can goto http://forums.sudhian.com and look there in SFFTECH. You should be able to find out about it.

It would be nice if the couple .1Vs higher didn't kill the mobo, but I guess it just makes it a challenge :D

Bleed3r, can I have your bass?

hehehe.... *cuddles Fender Jazz Bass and Hartke 1155 Combo*

Yep.. WAY OFF TOPIC ... WOOT!

-/LB/-

I'm releived. I got my order changed to a stick of Corsair 512 3200LL, 2-2-2-6. Its now "backordered" so I think I got the last. The new stock I looked at the Corsair website is like 2-3-2 I think. :)

Lord:
I got a steal on that bass years ago when DeArmond was being discontinued or something. I think I paid $500CAN vs $1000US list seen in guitar catalogues. Although, I think when the discontinuing was going on I think musiciansfriend or something was selling them for around $250-350US, so alot of people got them there too. I love it, and the fretless mwahs awsomely. It has great sentimental value with all the wear I've put into it (no not from trying to make it look cool by making gashes :p) and since I modded it myself. There's dried blood in alof of spots, and tons of wear from my hands. Gotta love the design and feel of the neckthru too :D

Here's the history of OCZ as I remember it:

They started out offering overclocking "guaranteed" cpus, normally at a small markup, as well as RAM.

The RAM was marketed as PC133, it was PC100 that would ~sometimes~ oc to 133. They gave the reviewers better sticks, sometimes even COMPETITORS sticks, to get a good review, then sold crap. The CPUS were normally branded as a: PIII 800 that will reach 1ghz, and were really a 750 that ~might~ make 850, maybe more. You couldn't return ANYTHING. Lots of people got bad parts. This is WAY back when.

They almost went out of buisiness, and dropped off the map. They came back again, this time claiming to "repent of past problems". Most of us gave them a second chance. What happened?

Well, they didn't sell CPU's this time, just RAM and cooling crap. The RAM was notorious for being unstable, if it even ran. I had one stick that worked well... They sold PC2100 as PC2700, sometimes even worse. They were crap again.

Now they're back again, and none of us who were there the first time will even go close. Their current ram has had rashes of bad sticks, their silver compound had NO silver, and most just don't trust them.

Their response has always been the same: It's the makers fault, we'll change manufacturers. This leads us to THREE possible conclusions.

1. They're telling the truth. In which case, I wouldn't go near it, they have really bad luck or bad research on which are good makers of memory/parts.
2. They didn't know any better. In which case, I'd stay away since they're idiots.
3. They're lying through their teeth, in which case the conclusion is obvious.

I'll pay the little extra for the sense of security that mushkin and crusial and corsair give me.
