Hmmm . . . Good news indeed. There are tons of Nvidia GPUs out there. This should help the project greatly! I know I have a whole stack of Nivida cards. Although I havent touched any of them since I got my 3870!:D

Agreed. I'm hoping there's backward compatibility to at least the 7000-series, but I expect all the 8000-series to definitely be supported.
 
yeah the 7000 series is a much different architecture (much fewer "processors") so I could see those not being supported. (But we can hope.)

I would hope the 8000s would be supported since the slides on that website were talking about how much unused Nvidia power is out there. If it was only going to support the new unreleased model I would have thought they wouldnt have brought that up. :)

This is good news indeed.... now hopefully there are no surprises like we have seen with the GPU client in the past.

 
Nice - now if they could just get a a GPU client to run totally independent of the host CPU we would be rocking. If they are correct on the speed you could potentially be seeing a few K points on one box with SLI. One quad core box with SLI, dual SMP clients AND dual GPU clients pushing up towards 10K PPD.... :eek::eek::D:D

I think you are correct. If NVIDIA implement the F@H client thru CUDA, this mean that the 8xxx series and up will be supported. the 7xxx series have no support for CUDA (no unified shaders).

 
My poor 8800GTS runs so hot now...... I bet It will bake.

Does EVGA require registration for the lifetime warranty, cuz I may need it :eek:

Well the slide reads "70M NVIDIA CUDA GPUs in the world, averaging ~100 GFLOPS sustained", so I'm thinking it's a bit more than "pure speculation".

Right, but just because a card can do CUDA doesn't mean that they'll support folding on it. There could be legit technical reasons why some cards wouldn't work.

And for some reason I didn't see CUDA on that slide the first time I looked over that page, so I was actually in guessing mode.


 
SLI'd 8800GTX's, Q6600, all water cooled waiting for this client to put it to the test! The thing is they are talking about installed base and I would say a large portion of the world has some form of 8800 right now... with prices hitting the $100 mark GT, GTS and even GTX can be had for low $200.

Sits back and waits to see how this develops!
 
If this work great, I'm eyeing a 9800GX2 watercooled :eek:

Good thing is I can give this a try with $0 cost... I have the setup already and if it is worthy, maybe I convert a few of the Q6600's to run a 9900GTX... Only if the WpPpD is favorable.

You are already close to blowing another fuse..... can you handle an extra ~150-200 watts per box?

I'm guessing they're counting every single 8 series chip sold, which would include all the lovely 8400M GS chips sold in laptops along with all the other underpowered 8 series they sold for desktops. I've got a feeling anything less powerful than a 9600GT won't be worth running. nvidia marketing at its best with the 70M number.

Don't get me wrong, i'm super pumped about this whole thing, I'm just tired right now and I get tired of companys spinning numbers to make themselves look super awesome. Glad its friday!

 
I know most of what is going on right now is purely speculation, but I have a few questions about this.

I know I would have to buy a new card for this. I am wondering if I would need a new processor too. I still havent jumped on the quad core bandwagon, so I am thinking my dual core running SMP wouldn't have enough umph to push a GPU client also. I think I would have to go to the classic client, and the GPU or just stick with the SMP. Or, if I got a quad with my new video card I would be able to run SMP and GPU.

Being I don't game much I have not had much need for a high end GPU before, and I really like quiet so I have been using passive video cards in the past. There is one 9600 GT that I like but it is also passive. I doubt that would be good for this type of use would it?

Be careful with that statement about anything under 9600GT being too slow. A 8800GT, 8800GTS 320/512/640, 8800GTX and 8800Ultra are powerful enough to give the 9600GT a run for the money. Anything below a 8800GTS 320 is underpowered indeed but if we can speculate those 88xx cards is averaging 150-200 GFLOPS, it's very plausible. It's rumored that a 9800GX2 is close to 1 TFLOP (unless I'm mistaken with the 9900GTX).

Just get yourself a PCI slot cooler that runs a few extra fans on your video card.
I have 3 extra fans on my Geforce 8800GTX and if I recall right (I an not on that computer at the moment) it idles around 40-45C which I think is really great for that toaster oven.

I can hardly wait. :D :D Geforce 8800GTX and a Q6600 both cranking out at the same time. We'll probably have to give up the dual SMP/boxen setup as the GPU client will need some extra CPU support.

You'd better get an electrician in there to give you a dedicated power line if you're going to do that! Your apartment might explode!!:D
 
Remember too that you can always remove a handful of screws... remove the crap thermal paste they put on and get something like MX-2 and probably see a 5c drop with just that change.
