Final Fantasy Resonance

It's styled like that 2.5D RPG that was well received (forgot the name, was indie) where everything else is 3D except the characters (and I suppose dialog portraits but those can be typical even for full 3D JRPGs), which I've always felt is stylistically inconsistent.

Tbf some old Playstation JRPGs did this, too, where the characters were 2D while the camera and environment were 3D but with modern effects it doesn't come off as quaint imo. Something like Sea of Stars' presentation would have been up my alley, since the last FF game I played was fully 2D.
Octopath Traveler? That was made by Square Enix, too, so not indie.

Paper Mario on N64 did the 2.5D thing, maybe the first time I saw that style. Dragon Quest 7 on PS1 was similar but isometric with rotatable-camera. Sea of Stars looks amazing, I'll need to check that out, thanks...

So, apparently this is just an un-gachafication of one of their gacha games. And to an extent, I can see the gacha system from the original game.

I'm not far enough in the game to give an opinion on how I feel about the game. Right now, it doesn't exactly feel like Final Fantasy, but as for a game, I'm undecided atm.

The music is beautiful... Worth the price of admission alone.
Having the Japanese voiced gameplay open in the background has made me do an almost 180 on my initial impressions, based just on the audio design and music. It's so good and there's almost always something interesting happening aurally.
