Filthy Disgusting Laptops

Why is every laptop I work on so disgusting?

Crap all over the screen, keys stuck with crap, stains all over the place. I swear 99% of consumer laptops 'regular' people use all look like this.

It's like they don't think they can be cleaned or something. Just working on them grosses me out especially if I have to replace a keyboard, the gunk, hair, and crap underneath...dear jebus.

And WTF is up with 99% of these machines having missing keys all over place? Seriously WTF are they doing?

I always spend time cleaning them (I should charge for this). One, because my OCD goes crazy and two, because I feel bad for the poor abused laptop.

How many disgusting machines have you guys worked on this month?

Have you come across any pubic hairs?

I usually avoid touching other people's digital diapers.

Ugh.. yes, some stuck on the keys (not kidding) and others with f'n hairballs stuck in the fan and underneath the keyboard.

How? Why? Some people have no shame.

This week has been particularly bad. Absolutely disgusting machines, 2 of them were less than a year old.

I would be embarrassed bringing them in for repairs.

FFS! GIVE THEM A GODDAMN ONE MINUTE WIPE DOWN BEFORE YOU DROP OFF THESE DISEASE RIDDEN MACHINES!

I don't regularly repair machines but I do have to take a look at my inlaws machine from time to time. They are smokers and do not care for their laptop at all. Its nasty, grimey, every key is sticky with something and it reeks.

I have seen many other laptops missing half the keys sometimes. I always wonder what the fuck people are doing with their machines. Its always like they are going out of their way to destroy it.

The implied innuendo of that statement appears to have been lost on all of you. :D

A bunch... Disgusting people. Their cars look no different. People treat their devices like shit. They just throw it away when they're done with it.

Welcome to The Disposal Society, pull up a chair - at least till another one comes along - in a different color with a different texture made from different materials that really doesn't improve on the basic concept of "a chair" in any manner or respect whatsoever but still gets the label "New and Improved!" - at which point you can toss that one you're about to sit in. ;)

Their CARS. So gross.. why cant people clean up after themselves? When I see devices or vehicles in that condition I wonder what their houses look like. God forbid they are renting their place and the landlord has to deal with that.

Not to offend anyone, and I don't mean to sound elitist or like I/people from 'x' country are better, but I'm from a country in Europe, and when my family and friends move over here to the states, we were genuinely curious why people's cars here always looked like complete fucking garbage, and why their houses were so dirty. It's just something that you don't see in a lot of parts of Europe (though don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean that there aren't nasty ass cars and stuff over there as well).

Anyway, didn't really understand why it was so difficult for people to clean the shit they have to use every single day. All that dust and garbage all over can't be good for your respiratory system, and spending thousands upon thousands for say, your car, quickly makes it so that future clean-up after such a long overdue cleaning session becomes even more difficult when there is salt gunk in the carpets, and coffee stains, etc.

tldr; clean your fucking shit.

My ex-wife is always moaning about her parents house (she lives there, lol). She goes on about how long it always takes her to clean it... I suggested that upkeep is actually less work than one huge clean. One is daunting, the other should be a reflex.

I'm with you on the differences between here and England (i know you said EU). There really is no compare. I find this side of the world is inherently lazy. If that offends someone, they are likely lazy.

i used to have this couple come into my shop, once a month. they only came in to get their computer cleaned out. dirt, pine straw, roaches, cigarette ash, ugh. you could smell them from 2 rooms away, and their computer from even farther. it was bad enough that the computer got like that, but every month was crazy. i always knew when they arrived because their odor proceeded them. usually tried to sneak out the back and let one of the junior techs do the dirty work.

And what's up with people shitting up their laptop displays? Fingerprints, dust, specs of food grease, stuck hairs, etc. Its not so bad with desktop monitors, just the laptop ones.

See... this is one of the many reasons why I will not work for a company or for myself doing home laptop/desktop repair except as a once in a while side job.

I did onsite Dell warranty repair for 2 years. Some of the places I went and computer I had to deal with just about made me puke on the spot.

If I were Dell or any other PC/Laptop mfg, I would enforce very strict warranty terms about this type of crap... you don't take care of your stuff, the warranty is void.

I couldn't imagine.. we live on a military base in the Military provided housing and keep our house clean, always. The stories we hear from local contractors about the insides of some of the houses just blow my mind. I remember before our last posting a house a couple doors down had guys in hazmat suits cleaning it..

I could only imagine their belongings. So. Weak.

one of the topics that jumped out is "So how do you get the motivation to clean?" - is infinitely more disturbing that any of the "nests" featured there, good lord. :D

Hahahah! It's a great sub. Make sure to check out Top.

I get this a lot. A lot of laptops look like they have had a pet sleeping on them for ages. Disgusting.

I get through a lot of anti-bac wipes cleaning them up before I even start working on them. Especially ones belonging to teenage boys. I've had to remove what looks like cat hairballs from fans, all sorts of sticky substances off screens, work hair out from under keys, chocolate (at least I think it is) from under the laptop and between the trackpads.

When I get a laptop in for a service it gets fully cleaned whether it needs it or not (most do). I make them look as close to new as I can. The thing is they can come back 6 months later and they look just as bad if not worse.

My kit all looks pristine. I just do a little cleaning often. A wipe here, and blow with an air-duster there.

I visit a lot of homes too and the state of peoples tech often reflects on the state of their home too.
