File Server Build Suggestions

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

File server. I'll host a fairly large amount of data. ~10tb for consumption by other devices in my house. TVs, laptops, tablets etc. I would like a solution which doesn't force me to manually recopy data onto spare disks when a drive fails and I replace it. I feel like this usually means raid, but other people might have other solutions for this.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

Don't want to spend more than $1000 altogether, but less is better. I feel like the main place where I could adjust cost is how much storage I start with. Maybe only start with 2tb and upgrade to 10 or 20 over the next few months to spread out that cost. Going this route, perhaps I could do a 2tb build in the 300-500 range? I realize raid controllers can be expensive, so maybe I can get some suggestions for those and add one in later when I have more data, i.e. break the 10tb barrier or something.

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.

7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?

1080P 24in. I don't really intend to use the server for anything graphical. I probably won't even have a monitor hooked up to it most of the time--will just interact with it over SSH.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

Depends on where the price ends up. If I can do something simple for 250-300 maybe this month. If closer to 500 I may wait a couple of months. I'm not in a huge hurry so I might even wait for one of these:

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.

Um... lots of SATA ports? OK. So I would like some sort of solution (probably RAID) which doesn't require me to manually recopy data on to a new disk when I do a replacement because a drive failed. Are there any suggestions besides going the RAID route?

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

I will not use windows. This will be a linux machine.
 
That case is a limited production run which is not taking orders any longer, so you've missed the window.

Our hardware recommendations tend to change monthly and sometimes even weekly. And obviously they'll change due to budget. Just did a sample server build list and yeah you're looking at around $450 give or take. So if you can't afford that this month, please come back when you can afford to spend $500 and ask for advice then. That way you will get more up-to-date hardware advice.

During that time, you might want to look up some solutions to your storage question.....

Well, there's FlexRAID, SnapRAID, and UnRAID.

Also note that you don't necessarily need a 3rd party or onboard RAID controller since you're using Linux. With Linux, you can do a software RAID using MDADM with any SATA ports available on the motherboard.

In addition, you might want to also look up ZFS. This thread might be of some use to you:

There is no best storage OS/solution out there. It usually comes down to which storage OS/solution you feel has the most pros over cons.
 
Thanks Dangman. I've used MDADM and had some minor issues with it, although I believe these issues were more related to the type of build it was used in and not entirely MDADM itself. (Bottom line that array is still fine after 4+ years.)

I'll look at the other non-raid suggestions you made as well.

Can I see your sample server build? I'm curious for ballparking. If I wait more than a month before building I'll ask back again, but I want to think about it now.

ZFS is a pretty popular file strorage file system and RAID engine that's been getting a lot of traction lately. It does have some features that Linux MDADM doesn't have.

Cool. Is the 500W PSU necessary? Just eyeballing wattages and saying that in the extreme case I will really use 8 hdds, I feel like that still puts me in the 300-400 watt range. Also I wouldn't mind spending a little more for something gold or even platinum standard.
 
You could use this PSU if you're only going to use up to 8 HDDs.

$40 - Corsair Builder Series CX 430 Watt ATX/EPS 80 PLUS (CX430)

You'll need to buy some y-splitter to accommodate 8 HDDs though. I think I had to buy two. It has 4 SATA connectors, and 3 4-pin molex. You'll need two molex to 2 SATA adapters. They're cheap though.

Those ratings don't mean much.

I'd reccomend this case, a full atx motherboard with plenty of pci-e 1x/4x/8x slots, and a few cheap sata cards

I have that case with the extra hard drive cage (12 hdd's total) and it is quite nice to work with, the tooless design for the hdd trays suck something fierce but they hold up in the end.

I wouldn't skimp on case or PSU as they should outlast everything else

I use drivebender on windows 8 to turn my 12 drives into a single mount point and to provide raid 1 redundancy on specific files/folders, drivebender is fairly cheap and offers a 60 day trial iirc, it also supports all versions of windows, xp and up.
 
I had a similar build for my NAS earlier this year.
