I know this is a long shot but does anyone possibly know when the new Filco Ninja Cherry MX Red keyboard is coming out? I have been having a very hard time finding information about it.

I'll definitely be getting one too, I'm skeptical to pre order from NCIX in case another retailer gets them first or at a better price. I've never tried Cherry MX Red before, only Blue but I am fairly certain this keyboard will be the shit :p

I'm not sure that NCIX ever had Filco keyboards in stock. A search shows that the older Majestouch 2 keyboards are backordered as well:

Which means either that they plan on selling Filco parts in the future or that they sold them briefly in that past.

Personally, I'm looking for the Cherry MX Red version of their limited edition Yellow & Black Majestouch 2 but everyone is sold out. There is still some Cherry MX Black stock but I don't think that my fingers can take the added strain :(

After thinking about it I am going to give the red filcos another try

i recently bought a red filco from pchome in china (with a little help during checkout from a chinese coworker)...shipped to my post office in less than one week. it was full sized with top printed us keys. looking forward to picking up another ninja red via amazon, since my brown ninja at work is too loud.

Red won't be much quieter than brown, most of the noise is from bottoming out...

they make rubber dampers to reduce the bottoming out noise. I have the red rubber dampers on my cherry mx blues and red.

I use both daily and red is far more quiet due to the nature of the light linear switch. Takes very little effort to press a key. I recommend installing rubber rings only on keys with stabilizers.

what is the difference between coolermaster quick fire rapid and a filco ninja ? They look identical just rebranding ?

Keycaps...Branding... and that's it.

Oh and there is a 104 and 87 key version. QF is 87 only.

Cheers,

According to their website http://www.diatec.co.jp/en/det.php?prod_c=888 it is now available, but I can't find it on Amazon or any other US retailers websites?

Unfortunately, that link was posted at least when the previous container had several of them which were sold on Amazon. So it's not completely false, but they took the item down after all the stock was sold and there was no ETA on a new shipment.

Hard date has been confirmed: June 15th is when Black Ninja's will be in stock @ Amazon. You can check maybe 1-2 days earlier (Hard to know when the container came off the ship), but the 15th for sure is when it will be there (according to Keyboard co. via Geekhack).

Cheers,

I was just wondering because i just got the cooler master quickfire rapid in the mail yesterday with brown mx switches and its absolutely the best keyboard i have ever used. I love how small it is and i only need 87 keys anyways. I was just wondering what the differences were and is it possible to buy custom key caps. loking for some that have a rubberized feel

You can get any custom keycaps you want that will fit Cherry MX switches. Head on over to Geekhack.org to see what people are coming up with for some ideas. You can order your own keycaps from wasd, they will do colors, legends, etc. any way you want.

Good luck and it's great you like the mechanical!

Cheers,

most of the time, the keycaps that ship with the keyboard are crap and start to wear down fast.

Most of the group buys at greekhack are for the double shot keys, which are way more durable then your standard plastic keys. My filco is 1.5 years old and it already looks like hell, i've been eyeing a group buy for a while.

Double shot abs or dye sub pbt seems to be the usual for GH group buys.

Key profiles are important to consider if you're buying individual novelty keys
Filco/QFR/KBC/Ducky keys have a different profile than Signature Plastic keys (what a lot of the GH group buys get).
And real Cherry Corp keys are also slightly shorter than SP keys.
I think WASD has Filco profile keys.
I think imsto has Filco profile keys.
I have no clue on the profiles for the aluminum or zinc keys. (Maybe Filco since it seems most keys out of China have Filco profile)

So 3 different profiles for most Cherry MX compatible keys.
  • Filco/QFR/KBC/Ducky
  • Signature Plastics
  • Cherry Corp

If you're buying a 87/104 set it's not much of an issue unless you prefer one over the other.

What kind of wear and tear did your filco experience after a year and a half? Did the writing on the keys simply being to wear off or were there some more serious problems?

Not sure I agree that the GH ABS keys are going to wear down any slower than the ABS keys included on a filco, poker, pure, etc. ABS is ABS. I don't know of any real evidence other than one person's/troll's wiki on Geekhack. PBT, however, WILL discolor when exposed to sunlight (think used IBM Model M keyboards). Furthermore, PBT is less durable than ABS, as it's much more brittle. This is why it cannot be used for double-shot manufacturing. PBT caps will crack much sooner than typical ABS caps, and yet they cost much more.

They probably got shiny.

Yeah, they are getting shiny. All the key lettering are still there, it looks like someone took nail polish remover to the key.

My filco keyboard MX blue has NOT been holding up well. I had bad chatter in less then a year of light usage (keyboard at home), had about 6 keys with bad chatter, and another 4 keys with light chatter. I replaced every single alpha key with new switches and brought the keyboard to the office (heavy usage). Now, after a few months, two of my keys are chattering again.

Don't think the blues fit my heavy typing style. I do have rubber dampers to prevent them from bottoming out. I replaced half they keyboard with red switches and they might be better for me without the tactile bump. I have spent around $250 on this keyboard and parts.

So by getting shiny is that only a cosmetic defect, or does it actually take away from the tactile feel of the key?

Probably adds a bit more friction to the key (shiny = smoother = more surface area = more contact), and it'll feel different to the touch obviously... How much that's gonna bother you only you could say tho.

Filco Ninja where are you ?

NCIX Canada (but not NCIX US) has the Filco Ninja's in stock with free shipping. Their website will not allow you to order from the US. Instead you'll need to contact them directly and ask if they will ship it to you.

Obviously Kyle is still filtering their URL. Just search for Filco on their website.

It sucks, I contact them but they just ignore me.

Just picked up a black ninja tenkeyless cherry brown filco from amazon. I was going to do the reds, but the browns are still the best medium bowl of porridge between gaming and typing.

Keyboard Co. has stated they don't know where the MX Reds have gone, only that they are allegedly in route to the Amazon warehouses. Amazon decided it would be a good idea to divide the stock among 4 (no joke) distribution centers, and as such stock will be very limited when it does come in. That is why the mx browns went out of stock in about 6-8 hours after posting.

The revised schedule is that MX red would be up by the end of the week. I have no faith that Amazon will have them posted sooner, but hey you just don't know.

Cheers,

Oh great! Another 3-6 month wait for MX Browns! I really wish the process of purchasing a Filco was straight forward and affordable. I'm willing to pay $150 for a keyboard but having to jump through these hoops is pain in the ass. While you could order directly from The Keyboard Company the total cost is roughly $200 for the same part and what if for some reason it needs to be sent back to the UK (defect for example).

It will not be another 3-6 months. As I said, the stock was split. There is more MX Browns coming. It's just unknown when and how many.

Secondly, you have the 30 day guarantee from Amazon. Third, you can try NCIX also instead for ninja Browns.

Cheers,

My apologies Benjus, I misread your original post to mean that the MX Reds were split between warehouses and that the MX Browns were sold out.

It's cool Safety, I could see how my words were confusing. Glad we got it all cleared up.

Cheers,

15 Left now! :D Sweet, now I have one for work and for home. I have a black full size ninja with us keys, brown switches, and original box, I can sell below retail if anyone is interested. It is about 6 months old and in great condition. Send me a PM if you is interested.
