FFXIV Beta?

There's a lot of WoW clones and WoW-inspired games out there already, why would you want more?

FFXI had it's own approach to the MMO genre. Personally I'd like to see FFXIV tweak and refine the FFXI formula; but if it instead decides to go a new route, I definately want it to go it's own way. Those of us who are anxiously awaiting it are doing so because FFXI was different than the other MMOs out there. We're hoping to get that same difference (or rather a different difference :p ) from FFXIV.

If we wanted a WoW-inspired MMO, there's a dozen we could choose from; we're worked up about FFXIV because we hope it's different.

Personally, having it take some more WoW cues would drastically lessen the brutality of playing the game and I'm crossing my fingers for North American only servers.

downloading now, it's going slow as shit, and i don't see any way to cap my download/upload speeds so i'm pretty sure that it's maxing out my upload and therefore limiting my download, not to mention all the internet in my house.

The merged severs really detracted from the game when FFXI was released, All of the JP players were near max level and knew when and where to farm the good drops. One of the most enjoyable aspects of online games for me is exploring a new world empty of most players.

The JP bias and advantage made the game extra brutal in my case. It started to ease up once I got to higher levels and finally learned enough japanese to function with JP players in the game.

After my first year on Bahamut I was chatting it up with some random JP players in my party and was wondering why there was so much hate towards NA players while looking for some more members and it went like this...but in japanese:
me: A lot of JP really hate playing with NA players huh
jp1: w
jp2: Many NA are bad at the game so some play with JP only
jp3: JP ONRY
me: is it like this on all servers or just bahamut?
jp2: bahamut?
me: yea this server is bahamut ( *_*)7
jp2: We call this Server Zero
me: ...
me: ( -__-; ) ...Now I understand... orz

I never had much of a problem with the JP players. I found most of them avoided us NA types because so many of us were rude jerks that didn't know what we were doing. Found that most of them spoke some English but were embarrassed that it was bad. Was amazing how many would start talking to me when I'd take my japanese dictionary and take the minute or two to hunt up a word they've been using in thier conversation and ask if blah (romanized version of it) means whatever. Just the fact that I cared enough to put the effort in to translate just one word seemed to be all it took.

Although I did have some parties with JP players that didn't know (or didn't seem to know) any English. We did just fine. Autotranslate ftw!

Personally I kind of preferred JP parties, they tended to be a lot higher quality than the average NA party.

I'll use those screenshots for jerk off material later. While they're not so great in the graphics department (c'mon, it's in alpha), the mere thought of the game would be enough. God that game brings back memories.

I also agree with the above post. I enjoyed partying with a lot of the JP players. I was a decent player back in the day, so they liked partying with me. Most of the NA players were in fact people I did not wish to party with just because of their rudeness.

in the alpha im unable to change graphic settings and the stock settings are raping my computer.. then again.. my computer is pretty crappy lol

1) Controls are not intuitive (everything is inverted? wtf)
-took me 15 minutes to figure out how to attack(10 mins blindly clicking then looked it up via forums)

2) No real mouse support
-I assue they will update this but at the moment its made for consoles. First time I have ever played a PC game with both hands on the keyboard.

3) UI is complicated while being to simple
-key actions or switches are behind 2-4 clicks or buttons, one you have your action bar up its good but you have to work for it. After you memorized the controls its not bad. Also my action bar had a habbit for disapearing while I was playing and had to keep starting it over and over.

4) No way to filter out battle messages
-This is an easy fix, and should at least change the default settings so battle info goes to the battle tab not the general tab. Makes communicing with anyone in the battle zone next to impossible. MMO with no comminication is rather pointless.

5) City is a cool design, but there should be some kind of waypoint system. I hope there will be in the final version. I got lost a few times since the city is 3 levels high and only one route to get to cirtain areas that are not apparent from looking at the map. (10 minutes running around to find the fishermans guild yay!)

Once and I figured out how to move and get past part of the class quest I finally got to the battle zone just outside the city.

I was an archer(read Ranger) I would have tried a red mage but ffxiv does away with the "normal" names and put some classes together. The red mage for instance is a red mage but without sword skills (fail?)

Anyway I start killing stuff around the zone, I learn that some mobs can kill you, I have not died at this point but I have watched a few die to a few tough mobs. The hardness rating system doesnt seem to be working yet so they all look like the same strength. I proceed to cherry pick about 5 mobs with 30% hp that have killed another person (lulz)

I eventually link up with party which consisted of me(archer), another archer, and 2 warrior types, all within a level of each other. Oh and max party size is 15, which is pretty nuts, but I think they just moved away from alliances.

We start killing mobs pretty easily, the 2 archers do pretty solid damage and we can drop em fast and the warrior types seem to hold hate and take damage alot better so its working well.

I did have a problem once where I ran out of arrows and tried to switch to antoher stack and could not. my abilty called "refill arrows" did nother so all I could do was punch this mob for 1 damage instead of my 50-100 damage. I died because of it with 3 stacks of arrows in my inventory.

I ended up hitting level 8, and got some new basic skills. nothing fancy, I did get shadowbind which was cool since I remember that skill from ffxi. I got in trouble since we attacked a massive crab thing that was 1 shotting people when it could hit them, so I hit shadowbind and ran off, will it lasted all of 1 second and I died again... woo!

The stats didnt really seem to do alot. Im not sure if they have them enabled since I jacked alot o fmy skills from 17 starting to 50 (like dex and agi and vit) and didnt see much improvement.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Very Alpha stage still. I had fun in the party, archer was fun trying to time my shots. I think my best hit was a 187 TP hit (forgot what it was called) I think i also had a 80-90 x3 multishot which was pretty nice. Fighting mostly roseflower things.

I had alot of fun in ffxi, there was alot of grinding but I didnt mind it, the thing is Im older and just don't have that kind of time to dedicate to an mmo. Im not sure if it would be worth it if you can only play 10 hours a week.

I remember playing in JP only groups. Alot of the time they were pretty anti NA players. But if you knew how to work the translator then they can be persuaded to let you in if they are desperate. The 80% of the JP groups I was in absolutly slayed the zone. Massive XP fast levels, other 20% were noobs.

Screenshots of the city please :)

Yeah, my time in FFXI with JP players wasn't bad. The key was to not be an asshole and actually know how to do your job. Since I was a RDM that was very good at his job I actually had a few JP seek me out during the early morning hours for 10K/hr goodness.

Need to see what my buddy thinks of the new game though. He played FFXI from launch up until about 6 months ago and he got into the beta so will have to hit him up later and see what he thinks.

I've played with JP players ( my old EQ guild was Japanese), the problem in MMORPG's with regards to NA players is that most do not know how to properly conduct themselves.

Forget about the language barrier, the common complaints I hear from my old guildmates when forming a PT with NA players...

  • Leveling and leaving ( Oh I leveled, hey I have to go to bed now, thanks for the group. Group ends up disbanding because the NA player is a core class or the PT is in the middle of nowhere)
  • Loot (Most NA players dislike the NBG system) ( need before greed ) and would rather random for the drop if it's tradeable
  • Seldom use of stat boosting food (mana regen, etc)

I can't connect, now. I assume I have to wait for my scheduled play time. :/

yea i gotta kinda bummed about the scheduled play times cause of work and all.. so i have very little time to play...

Thankfully I don't work tomorrow. I get to play for the first time from 9PM-1AM EST tonight.

be nice if i could play it smoothly.. has anyone found an option to tweak graphic settings?

FFXIV beta runs at max video card settings with vsync, and i have a feeling vsync is creating alot of mouse lag (I get a bit even with my system, OC'd core i7 6 gigs ram, OC 4870 1g)

as far as I can tell you cannot change the graphic settings, so if you have anything less then a high-mid to extreme system, it will be laggy and choppy. which sucks for alot of potential testers.

Some screenies, :D

I did alot more exploring this round, came across some pretty cool things. I kinda forgot to take pics of everything interesting looking since i kinda forgot but here is something to tide you guys over.

Actually this pics are kinda meh, but it shows a dragon in some. lol

So I recorded a few short videos. I don't think there have been any limitations on sharing information.

Unlike other alphas / betas, I didn't accept an NDA for this. I'm not bound by anything legally, I know, but I don't want to get into any trouble on this forum for sharing info that shouldn't be shared.

Thinking, thinking, thinking... yup. Here they are:

At this point, it is obviously early in development. Movement is done exclusively through the keyboard... although you can use the mouse if you hate yourself.

It is a straight console port... no use of the mouse, pressing enter over and over to advance the dialogue, plays at 720p only. I mean, I know it's alpha, and it will get better, but right now the game was very painful and confusing. I'm glad to be a part of it and I already have feedback to provide, but the next time someone says alpha, I'll wait for the beta. :)

is the game going to be cross platform??? if it is I have a feeling that it will be pretty fail

The FFXIV official benchmark has been released. It can be downloaded from nVidia's website (http://uk.nzone.com/page/home.html). Check it out! It looks great!

Edit: Post your scores! I wanna see how I measure up. I hit 3000 exactly.

Yeah I hate to do this but i've really been looking forward to game. If anyone is willing to share an account, i'd definitely be willing to give something in return ;)

PM me for details.

Still hoping to get a beta invite sometime.

As for the benchmark.... terrible terrible options (lack thereof) only 2? Low (1280x720) and high (1920x1080). I run 1600x1200, whatever though. 3588 on low.

I think I check my e-mail twice a day just waiting for this beta invite.

finally figured out how the quest thing works, pretty good neato.

NEED CHAT FILTERS NAO

also voiced mmo would be epic. first few lines in the game were voiced then it stopped :(
