I have done some searching and couldn't find any information yet on the release of the obligatory 2-GPUs-on-1-PCB for the Fermi. Does anyone have any information or a link for this, or is there simply no info out there as of yet?
 
Last anyone heard it was cancelled. WAY too hot and power hungry. Fermi will need a respin first.

I was wondering about that myself considering the review here of the temp being 90º C on a single GPU board. I had a feeling that was going to be a problem.
 
doubt it would be called the 495 anyways.. since the whole xx5 part was created to represent the 55nm part vs the 65nm part of the GTX200 series cards.. only 2 cards that never got the xx5 designation was the GTX 260 216 core 55nm and the GTS 250/9800GTX+.. most likely will be called the GTX 490 and i doubt its scrapped since nvidia needs that to milk every dime they can out of their loyal customer base.. but it will probably be redesigned like the GTX 295 running a hybrid gpu/memory mix..we will probably have to see what the GTX 460 looks like.. my bet is if it runs cooler we will see a gtx 490 with a mix of 460 and 470 components in a dual gpu form similar to what the GTX 295 was being a hybrid 260/285..

I heard they are better utilized for space heater, so no more fermi 495 for gamers.
 
The 5970's GPUs were downclocked to 5850 speeds to keep the card's power requirements within PCI-Express specs. If a GTX 495 were based on the current 470 or 480, its power requirements would far exceed PCI-Express specs, which is a Really Bad Thing (tm).

Nvidia is either going to have to reduce power consumption dramatically or just simply not bother with dual-GPU solutions anymore. Considering the checkered history of the 7950GX2, the 9800GX2 and the GTX 295, it would not surprise me if they just focus on getting as much performance as they can out of the 300W envelope with a single GPU and leave the multiple-GPU setups to SLI.

Yeah, bang on. I've been keeping an eye on this and a dual GPU part doesn't make sense, they'd have to bring at least 450W of power to the card to get 2 full speed Fermi GPUs working that way... on top of the power supplied through the motherboard (75W) you'd need 2x 8pin and 1x6pin PCI-E power slots, and the card wouldn't be PCI-E compliant. I dont see that happening.

A dual GPU card downvolted and downlocked to stay under the 300W envelope wouldn't be significantly faster than a standard 480 so a bit pointless.

nVidia didn't release a dual GPU part for the GTX 280 either. Not till they release the 285 and 275, and the 295 is base on 275, the new revision chip, except with lower clock

How so? An overclocked 5970 also far exceeds PCIE specs and I haven't seen anyone report any ill effects. It's not a big deal.
 
with the amount of heat and power consumption from the gtx480, i doubt the 495 will be out anytime soon, nvidia will probably have a bunch of delays on the 495 if it ever does come out

What's your point? The 5970 shows that the PCIE spec is pretty arbitrary, and similarly, a cutoff of "more wattage than an OCed 5970" is also arbitrary. You or I don't really have a clue about what the real cutoff point for wattage is.

To be able to sell it with pcie 2.0 logo on the box it need to be under 300 watts. currently that not possible with 2 480 or even 2 470. though if they just forget about having the logo then they can stick 2 470 down clocked on it with 2x 8 pin plugs and that should worked. for fully clocked would need at least 2x 8pin + 1 6 pin that be about 450 watt that it can easily supply. 2 480 would require at least 3x8pin + 18 6pin which be about 600 watts it need.
if they where to do that i would recommend at least liquid cooling and phase cooling to really use those cards.

Selling a non-compliant add-in card is a big enough liability that it isn't done outside of very limited custom cards.

But anyway, my 5970 can approach the power consumption of two 480s when overvolted.

227w idle 4.5ghz HT 1.4v
276w one p95 thread (simulating furmark's cpu wattage increase)
482w furmark 725/1000 1.05v
804w furmark 1000/1200 1.3v

Subtracting 49w from the load increase to account for furmark's cpu load results in a:
206w load increase for the stock 5970
528w load increase for the overclocked 5970

All but 75w of it comes from the 8 and 6 pin cables, so its up to the power supply to deliver stable power. (I wonder how much power is too much for the gauge of these cables anyway. The 8 pin adds 2 grounds for extra stability over the 6, so there aren't many wires carrying the power.)
 
It's coming soon, I've heard the pcb is shielded by asbestos and it comes in 2 models; air cooled with 5 120mm fans, or peltier cooling. And the best thing is it hooks up straight to your 220v wall socket, no special psu needed! It also comes with special grooves for cooking eggs and marshmallows.

the GTX 275 was created AFTER the gtx 295 was released.. hell a long time after.. all they did was take the second card off a GTX 295 and go "oh look we have 2 cards now instead of 1 GTX 295, lets call it the gtx 275 and sell it.."


but this is exactly why i said we will have to wait for the GTX 460 to see what the power requirements are.. if they are well below the GTX 470.. then we pretty much know what the GTX 490 will be like i said in my post further up..
