The PS2 is insane, it's amazing how many people are still picking these up left and right. And nintendo keeps printing money. Two top spots, and the GBA outselling the ps3...
I wonder if crackdown will drop off the map now that the halo people have their beta keys. I'm a huge crackdown fan, but I bet sales fall off in a big way next month.

Nice. Where did you pull these from?

I think Crackdown will have a dramatic decrease as well. PS2 is still in demand believe it or not. The huge game library it has and the release of a certain game is sure to make people pick up a system :D

NPD february data posted at kotaku.com, forgot to credit where I stole this from

Pretty cool that Gears of War is still selling well on that list. I'd imagine it's being sold along with a lot of those 360 consoles being purchased. The Game Boy Advance is kind of surprising, even though it does have a low price... it seems there's not a whole lot of really good games left, coming out for it.

Another scary thing is how the xbox360 has 5 of the 10 top selling games for the month and sold ~50% less consoles compared to the Wii or DS. Shows that the xbox360 is more for the hardcore gamers (ones that buy lots of games) and the Wii/DS are more for the causal gamers.

Kind of sad the PS3 has no games selling in the top 10. Maybe Motorstorm will chage that for March.

I think the 360 game sales being higher than the Wii has more to do with the larger install base than with the owners being more "hardcore." The Wii is definitely doing really well with hardware sales and I am sure its software sales will catch up in the not too distant future.

I would think that PS3 will definitely have 2 games in the top 10 for March. I am really glad there has been some good news from the Sony camp of late as my PS3 has been used almost exclusively for BR movies prior to Motorstorm (really fun game).

So where are the people who still think $599 isn't too much for a console?

Total February PS3 Sales for Japan + North America were 219K...which is still short of what the Xbox 360 did in North America alone.

Compare the same time period not one that already has a foot in the market.

That's a comparison of "what might have been". That's not helpful compared to "reality as it is". Being first to market can be a genuine advantage.

I'm really suprised to see Gears of War still selling, it seems the game (maybe along with lost planet) is helping the sales of the 360 a little bit

also by that list, it seems the people who wanted to upgrade to the new gen consoles have done so already in bulk and its just trickling down now. I'm expecting the PS2 sales to stay steady and the rest (maybe except for the Wii with the low price tag) to trickle down and have a jump in sales when a block buster comes out

Sorry, but that's what Sony apologists do to feel good about a floundering system. Sony isn't competing against what Microsoft and Nintendo did a year ago; they're competing against them now, and right now, the competition is outselling them by a ratio of at least 2:1 (And in the Wii's case, nearly 3:1). The respective software of both platforms is moving better as well (With the 360 holding five of the Top 10, including the #1 spot).

Microsoft, unlike Sony, was still supply constrained at this point in the game. They didn't manage to up their shipments until April. Sony, however, has shipped 6 million consoles thus far and hasn't even come close to selling them. That amount of stock shipped, added to the numbers of sales they're getting, mean there is a lot of shelf space being taken by a static platform.

My own skepticism of the Wii aside, it's clearly supply constrained right now. I expect we'll see another ~400k month out of it before it starts sliding down because of the game drought. I also think the 360 will start getting an upward pull starting in April or May. From there to the end of the year, it's a steady stream of AAA-looking stuff: Shadowrun, Forza 2, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, Halo 3, Lost Odyssey, and so on. I hate to sound all boyfanish, but that's an amazing line-up of games, and I didn't even mention some of the cross-platform stuff (Mercs 2, Assassin's Creed, GTA IV).

Don't get me wrong - there's some awesome stuff coming out for the Wii and PS3, too. I just think the 360 will be the system to beat this year, at least in terms of library. Whether the library translates to good hardware sales is what we'll have to see - but you'd hope there's a strong correlation between good libraries and good hardware sales, right?

The 360 is the strongest platform for games right now, although it still has the lead, anyways while the console wars has begin, we won't know much untill the end of 2007.

I don't think Motorstorm will reach the top 10 because only like 1 million people have a PS3, and like 8mil have xbox and 4 mil have a wii so having less console numbers should correlate with less sells.

So explain PS2 game sales in the light of what you just said?

There aren't many new PS2 games out. God of war and Guitar hero 2 both will be in the top ten, and FFXII was number 1 for a few months when I first came out. The only reason it isn't full of PS2 games is because not many PS2 games are being made now but if they release 10 great PS2 games in one month there is a good chance the top ten would be all PS2.

I'm curious to know how many PS2's sold were bought by repeat customers. I have a slim PS2 I bought brand new, about 15 months old and it's starting to crap out on me already. Before I play a game I have to move the laser assembly around manually, otherwise when I start it up it makes this weird grinding noise and doesn't do anything :(

But my own issues aside, I have a feeling a lot of people who bought PS2's early on have had them die by now.

I think march will have much different numbers due to gundam in japan, and motostorm for the ps3.
are these US figures? or worldwide?

PS3 sells are doing better in there first months than Xbox360 did. So PS3's launch wasn't as floppy as Xbox 360's.

--------------------month--------total --------------------------- month ----- total
1 PS3 Nov 06 220,500----220,500 -- X360 Nov 05 357,250----357,250
2 PS3 Dec 06 533,250----753,750 -- X360 Dec 05 303,500----660,750
3 PS3 Jan 07 273,000----1,026,750 -- X360 Jan 06 269,000----929,750
4 PS3 Feb 07 133,750----1,160,500 -- X360 Feb 06 187,250----1,117,000

and the only 2 systems to sell faster than the Wii in the first 4 months is N64 and GBA.

VGCharts rocks.

As has been mentioned at least 1,000 times on this forum, the 360 was still suffering from massive shortages during this time one year ago.

Obviously, for good or bad, the PS3 is not suffering that same fate. You also have to add in that MS did a true worldwide launch while Sony still hasn't launched in the PAL regions, meaning Sony has a smaller region in which to ship their manufactured units. MS's supply was more thinly spread.

In March 2006, MS had sold 3.19m 360s. Sony is going to have to sell around 1.1m PS3s this month to match that. It's very possible they might do that with the Euro launch coming but I wouldn't hold my breath.

O it was news to me, I knew Xbox had shortages but I didn't think they were worse than PS3 launch shortage.

Considering the price is even more expensive in Pal land I doubt the launch will go well, and Sony has never had a good launch.

Also Wii is dropping the ball with there production, they produced more N64's in the same time frame and the demand for the N64 wasn't near has high as it is for the wii. If they produced 3 million wii's today they would probably be sold by the end of this week, unlike the PS3 who Is making Millions of PS3 but just can’t sell them.

I've often wondered if Nintendo is not ramping up production in fear of overramping, leaving them with millions of unsold Wiis over the summer in case demand curbs heavily over the next three months.

Still, with their track record of lackluster systems, you'd think they would want to push as many Wiis out the door as possible. I find the shortage interesting.

Yeah you would think a newly designed Gamecube wouldn't be that hard to manufacture and that they could juts pop them out millions a month like DS's. They could be trying to over hype there console by creating an unnecessary demand if so they are doing a good job of it.

Not to mention alot of those PS3s are just sitting on the shelf, where the 360s were selling out as soon as stores got them. thats why there was a 2mill+ jump in March for the 360 sales. On paper the 360 launch may look worse than the PS3s, but in reality, the 360 was much better going considering everything above.

As for the PS2s, I am convinced the PS2 #s are full of repeat buyers for whatever reason. $99 - $125 for a dvd player and a game machine is too good to pass up, not to mention all the $10 games out there. ill be buying one next paycheck in fact, and it will be PS2 #3 for me.

For the lazy:
Nintendo's Wii outsold all other next-generation consoles in February, the NPD Group reports, further solidifying its second place market share among new consoles in the US. Meanwhile, PS3 sales continue to lag.
It was not all bad news for Sony, however. Sales of its PS2 are still strong, selling 295,000 units during the month. This was about the same as its performance in January, when it sold 299,000 consoles.

The Wii sold 335,000 units in February, a drop of 23 percent from the previous month. Xbox 360 came in second with 228,000, down 22 percent. However, the PS3 showed the biggest drop with some 127,000 consoles sold, falling some 49 percent.Sony's obvious sales problems with the PS3 are beginning to lend credence to reports that the consoles are beginning to sit on shelves while consumers opt for the cheaper Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii.
A sales associate of an EB Games location in central Pennsylvania told BetaNews that since February, the location's stock of PS3's had either stayed the same or grown, whereas new shipments of Wiis -- few and far between - would sell out within hours.
Overall, the Xbox 360 still maintains a considerable lead in the US, with 5.1 million consoles sold, with the Wii selling 1.9 million and the PlayStation 3 1.1 million units.
Microsoft says it is satisfied with its position, and that the biggest challenge for it now is to expand the market, much like Sony has done with the wildly successful PlayStation 2.

49% drop, is that correct?

Also interesting that the US sales of the 360 alone beat out the US+Japan sales of the PS3 combined. That's not good for sony.

Of course, the 360 is selling less than 15k a month in Japan... Even with Blue Dragon. Ouch. The weird thing is that Famitsu just released their top 100 games of 2006 and the 360 had three exclusives in the top 13. People just aren't buying the system no matter if there are good games or not.

Revenge for Hiroshima never buy american products.

Never been to Japan I see.

yes never been, but there has to some reason no xbox sells. Could just bee they don't have a cute mascot like mario or crash bandicoot. Or it could be that 1 RPG isn't enough for them to buy the system.

X360's "rings of death" phenomenon doesn't go over well in Nippon. I've been there many times. They demand high quality electronics. Sony isn't exactly Accuphase, but their product seems to be a cut above Microsoft, at least in manufacturing quality. Of course they don't buy American cars either, but that has more to do with insane taxes. I'm waiting for a hardware refresh to pick up an X360. Wii is off the table at this point. Maybe in 2 years, when 4-5 of the big AAA 1st party games have shipped and the system costs $129, I'll bite. ;)

What do you mean? Two weeks ago the PS3 was steaadily selling about 20,000 units a week in Japan. Last week Gundam came out and they sold 40,000+ PS3s and this week they sold 30,000+. That is a big increase because of one game.

I misunderstood the scope in which you thought it was affecting sales. Yeah, there was a two week sales spike, partially due to Gundam's release. But it wasn't anything that significant, probably around 30,000 consoles. Not like the 90,000+ MS sold for Blue Dragon.
