FEAR isn't scary

Graphic quality definitely plays a part. I played a good portion of Bioshock at 15fps or so with graphics turned up, and it was pretty scary for me. Then I got sick of the low fps and turned everything way down, and the game turned into a joke. Realism/immersion definitely counts.

fear can be scary by the set up u have. the sound is what made it scary for me. if u have 5.1 set up play in the dark by yourself and blast the volume that scared me.

I used to kid my wife about how scared I was while playing the game. I can remember playing one late fall Saturday afternoon while nobody was home, and it's just kind of creepy. I remember walking through a hallway and then the little girl popping up out of nowhere. I agree with someone else, Bioshock has that same kind of feel to it while playing. I've only played the demo of Bioshock though.

yeah, if you play at night with all the lights off with some good surround sound it get's kind of uber creepy.. I would get startled for sure when Alma would flash in my face .. like at the top of that ladder.. man, that one always gets me.. lol. or I would see her in the shadows and stuff.. we're talking some "willies" not totally bugged out.. I never got all freaked out and had to turn on the lights and watch a disney movie or something..

Not sure if scary is the right word, but if you want disturbing as hell, track down the Condemned games. Part 1 came out on the PC and is cheap these days. Part 2 is on the consoles only and I hope they bring it to the PC some day.

+1 Condemned left me feeling so damn uneasy the entire time I was playing it. That game on a powerful system with good sound can really get under your skin. (Those damn things crawling around in the microfiche vaults. FUCK THEM.)

Dead Space has it's moments but gets a little repetitive after awhile.

The first Fear will always have a special place for me, because it was the first game I played through when I got back into PC gaming a few years back. I thought it was really scary back then. Since revisiting the game since then, it's really not too bad but I guess it depends on what you're used to.
