FEAR isn't scary

I'm playing FEAR 1 now (never played it before) and it's nowhere near as scary as people say it is. I'm about 2/3 of the way through, so I think I've seen most of the tricks. Yes it's pretty creepy, but you have to be a giant pussy to really be freaked out by the stuff in this game. The combat is awesome though, way better than FEAR 2!

Yup, the only time I startle is when you get to the Armacham offices and that window breaks in front of you, gets me every time lol. Other than that, not really :(.

If you think that's bad, at least the "scares" are creative in Fear 1. In Fear 2, they are hardly nonexistent and consist completely of the screen going a bit darker and an old alma walking around in your face.

At least in Fear 1, you get better sequences like the hallway turning to blood, etc. and Alma as a child is always more frightening than an old Alma who just looks like a meth adict bum walking around.

It was a good scare for me. I even sat friends down at particular checkpoints to scare them.

I could barely play bioshock because it scared the piss out of me. I'm a big pussy. :p

FEAR1 didn't scare me at all, FEAR2 OTOH I can't even play without having to pause it and look over my shoulder every few minutes. I'm a big pussy aswell. :D

FEAR wasn't that scary to me. Fatal Frame for the PS2 scared the crap out of me though.

:S..

I find FEAR 2 is not scare at all....

FEAR 1 is another story, it really got me badly...

Atmosphere is fantastic in both FEAR games, the only game that really sends chills down my spine, scaring with jumpy parts isn't that hard but freaking you out like that is an art.

Found myself with a tense neck, dry mouth and on the edge of my seat the more I played FEAR 2

The game trying to scare me actually turned me off from it. I uninstalled the FEAR2 demo when I got past the first part in the little library because it was just boring with no room to explore and only one way to go which was down the darkened "scary" hallways.

Erm...what about bioshock was scary? Good atmosphere and twisted characters but none of it was fear inducing per se.

The first FEAR had some good jumps and was pretty damn creepy. Haven't given FEAR 2 a shot but the demo seemed like it gave you a pretty good idea what to expect. Flickering lights, crackling sounds, and lots of BOO moments.

Yea, I didn't think bioshock was that scary. Maybe the first few areas just because of the atmosphere of the game, but it got boring around awhile imo

Haven't got to fear yet tho so I can't say...

Bioshock was just tiring with the same enemies getting stale quickly.

The worst thing about the game is that it just doesn't look realistic. Whoever the character designer is went for a strange cartoony look that spoils the entire ambience of the game.

We were all told that it was the Spirtual Successor to System Shock and it wasn't even close...then again the graphics were so primitive in System Shock 2 that maybe they were cartoony and we didn't realize it :)

Scene i loved about FEAR1 was when your climbing up the ladder, you look up noones there, get to the top and bam alma is right in your face, caused me to fall off the ladder more than once, great stuff

Problem with FEAR 2 is that all the scares were too predictable. If it got quiet for awhile you'd be like, "oh okay, one is coming up" and it'd never be a surprise that was timed well. And even if Alma or ghosts were going to appear you'd notice your environment change first instead of them just appearing out of the blue. It was just super predictable and not even scary as again - it was always old Alma who just looked like a bum off the street or a naked meth adict or something. Alma is scary because she's a little girl in a red dress.

Heh, that was the one part of the game that really freaked me out the first time I played :).

Funny thing I just played FEAR again last weekend (will be getting FEAR 2 soon, so...)

Well, there are stuff that isn't scary once you've seen it several times, like when you see that man walking past you and disappear so many times. Others are mostly more of a surprise element, like each time a dead men's face appear out of nowhere.

However I think there are many good scary part with Alma, like when alma crawls towards you in some small confined space, it sets you up to anticipate something with the little girl voice saying "over here" and i feel its these anticipation that makes it scary without needing any surprise element.

Anyway, it depends on individual i guess. As someone suggested, try Silent Hill games for those horror element that doesn't involve monster jumping out of closet or any sudden surprise. Pyramid head is pretty creepy when he's haunting you down, lol. Or those moving wheelchair that comes out of the dark

It really depends how you're playing. FEAR and FEAR 2 don't really legitimately scare you... they startle you. If you play in a very dark room with the sound very loud (i like playing w/ headphones) you'll probably find it at least a little bit scary.

heh, bioshock was pretty scary at some points, but it never really got to me because I was having too much of a blast playing it to really notice it.

Scariness: F.E.A.R. 1 > Bioshock > F.E.A.R. 2

fear 2 really let me down because I didn't get the same type of "i'm so scared I think i'll piss myself" kind of reactions as the first one did to me. It was just a bunch of action strung together.

Aint that the truth. Fear1 seemed better then 2 in my eyes. Most people may disagree though.

Having played the FEAR 2 demo, I agrees with you, particularly because of the no lean in FEAR 2

I use lean a lot in FEAR especially on Hard mode, its almost a must. It just feels like something is missing when we can't lean in FEAR 2

only game to ever really scare me was system shock 2...mainly my first run through, creepy as hell

Not sure if scary is the right word, but if you want disturbing as hell, track down the Condemned games. Part 1 came out on the PC and is cheap these days. Part 2 is on the consoles only and I hope they bring it to the PC some day.

Resident Evils 1 and 2 were scary. (That first time the zombie dogs jump into that hallway?? SHIT!)
Unreal was scary and a few OMG moments like the first encounter with the Skaarj.
Silent Hills 1 and 2 were scary.

FEAR is not scary.

I remember the first Resident Evil on PS1 scared the shit out of me. The first time I rented it I didn't actually play beyond the first zombie encounter because I was so scared.

First play through of Doom 3 scared me too but only until I realized few of the enemies posed any real threat. The opening scene when the guy gets possessed and all hell literally breaks loose...yea that was sweet. The one jump that really got me was when the imp breaks through the stairs at your feet right as you start to go up them.

The AVP games were also very intense and the mood was superb especially for those days. I didn't think the Lithtec 2 engine could work so well.

All this talk makes me want to go replay these games real late...

It could be worse; Every hallway could have a secret door that slides open to reveal an enemy as you walk past it ala Doom 3.

Yeah, that got old.

1. Are you playing FEAR with the music on? The music adds greatly to the atmosphere of the game.

2. Are you playing FEAR after midnight, with all the lights in the house off, and an open door at your back?

Fatal Frame scared me the most

heck yea, freakin scaryass game gave me the heebie jeebies back in the day, lol. don't even have a gun, just a camera to fight off ghosts. best horror game i played so far next to perhaps silent hill.

I don't leave the door open b/c someone always tends to silently walk in and yell "what are you playing" to make me jump.

FEAR was pretty scary for me.
It had the creepy atmosphere where 'I don't want to go any further' and the surprise BOO! scares.
The part where you jump down a vent and Alma creeps toward you while croutching was scary as shit!

Extraction Point was pretty good too, lots of dark spots.
Persus Mandate was a big joke, the graphics were so horrible it took away the scare factor entirely.
