Fear 2 demo stutter?

And it doesn't stutter? I ask only because the first video I saw of this demo was a PS3 demo and it was a stuttering mess. I loaded up the PC demo and was relieved it ran smooth for me. But then I see this thread... what is going on with this game?
Stutters at the auto save, but only little elsewhere. Not as bad as the PC version at all.

Downloaded it last night for the PC, no problems except a barely noticeable hic-up at the autosave

Many are getting the stutter and many are not. I tried it again without AA, still stutters badly outside and at save points. I would figure that a 4870 could handle this game at least as well as it handles Crysis. So, I am guessing that it is fixable.

No problems here. Ran very very well. Can't wait for the final game.

And its about time. After FC2 and GTA4, a complete waste of 100 bucks, I'm in the mood for something that rawks. And the FEAR games have always made me clinch my toes while playing.

BRING IT ON!!! :D

no doubt that it's a great game but I'm still curious why so many people like these kind of games. I mean, usually people play games to relax...not to be tense the whole time and get the shit scared out of them.

Same reason people watch horror movies. Getting the shit scared out of me from time to time is fun.

The original FEAR suffered from a similar problem. It was a question of opening a door, or trying to look around a corner and it would stutter. I did get a few of these in the demo, but nothing major. It did seem like it was mostly related to the autosave feature. Very smooth overall.

I noticed the same, but it wasn't 'that' bad... just every 2-3 mins or so there was a very very slight hickup (maybe 0.5 seconds) and everything was good again.

probably just loading new textures into memory or running a script or something

Perseus Mandate had it too and it was at the exact same trigger points and could be easily reproduced. I spent hours trying to figure that shit out. I removed the sound file from the game and it stopped hitching at those same points. I then put the sound file back in and it went right back to hitching at those same points. that sound file was 100% the cause of hitching in Perseus Mandate and is likely the cause in other FEAR games too.

Didn't see another Fear 2 Demo thread so I thought I'd just add that I am getting a problem with no sound whatsoever after the initial intros.

At least it's not just me. I was starting to think that it might be time to starting thinking about Windows 7 system build. Other than those little hitches, I'm at 1920x1080 with everything cranked and getting at least 40-60fps all the time.
The 360 version looks pretty rough by comparison, but the FPS are steady with no stutters. Maybe it's true about the sound file.

Agreed Silus the original FEAR did stutter, but for me and others it stutters like crazy. I hope is just the demo....

This thread might be dead, but I ignored it at first since I had no problem but that changed.

I have 4GB, E6400 and GTX260OC running 1920x1200 everything maxed under VistaX64.

I installed the demo and watched my wife play through it - silky smooth IIRC. I was running Forceware 178.24 at the time and using onboard sound. I was doing some driver downgrades and uninstalls trying to narrow down some BSODs.

I believe my BSOD problem is solved (unrelated to any of those things). I upgraded back to Forceware 180.48 which improved several other games like FC2. I also reinstalled my Audigy2ZS and latest Creative drivers.

Now the demo hitches and stutters quite annoyingly.

Usually everyone jumps all over driver versions when people mention stuff like this but I just saw arguments about XBox and autosave. Anyone explored any particular vendor/driver pattern to stuttering up to this point?

official 181.22 drivers work flawlessly. aside from the auto save points, the original fear stuttered if you didn't have more that 1gb of system memory. the fear 2 demo only stutters on my ati gear.

stutters and hitches quite a bit for me outside and its definitely not just the autosave spots.

dammit. i hope they get this ironed out by the release in three weeks but i doubt it. maybe they'll launch with a patch.

you sure? :D

I am not so sure what you are smoking with...

but I am having the same problem on my nVidia rig...

or I should say its 100% going to happen on every rig...

its not autosave, and its not RAM PROBLEM, which I have 8G already...

the auto save and ram issue was in reference to the original fear if you bothered to read the post. idiot.

and what is that crack supposed to mean. i fully believe that others are experiencing this problem with both ati and nvidia gear. i was expressing that i was experiencing it with my ati gear.

I should be clear, my stutters seem way more frequent than auto-save should be... As in several times in the same small room.

Ridiculous bigtime stutters here... all over the place, not just autosaves. I cannot play through this game if that's what the real one is going to do. I'll end up throwing my mouse through the monitor or something.

i7, GTX285, 181.22 WHQL, Vx64...

the original stutter from FEAR 1 is not auto-save, its a bug in engine....

but that was fix after several patch...

and no, its not even RAM issue, when FEAR came out, I am having 8G of RAM also..

so that is not very possible for things like this to happen, but it does...

The demo runs good for me, and I noticed a slight pause at a couple of points, but I attributed it to texture memory swapping (I'm playing with everything maxed out).

Even with those tiny hiccups, I'm buying this game for sure.

fear came out in october 05 so you must have been running it on a server build. for me adding the second gig of ram fixed everything. no more hitching whenever i entered a new area or if i turned around quickly. it was just like battlefield 2. it seemed like the game was fetching from the pagefile. english must not be your first language because i don't know what you mean by 'that is not very possible for things like this to happen, but it does.' what's not very possible? that the poor performance is related to memory? or that games can be buggy and need patches?

additionally, if you search for fear and hitching you'll actually find plenty of evidence that users remedied their hitching problems with going to 2gb of system memory.

one more thing, all of this fear 1 stuff aside, i ran through a the fear 2 demo on my friends machine with 2xaa and max in game settings. his 3ghz c2d and 8800gtx hitched a few times but it certainly wasn't nearly as bad as my 4870 512 cf system was last weekend. the game hitched every few steps. i'm not talking millisecond stops but stops that seemed to last a full second or more. maybe the 9.1 drivers will help.

I love Half Life series saving method, you save wherever you want and load at that exact coordinate and get right into it when you're ready. I can't stand games that don't allow saving at all, or make you restart way back on a level.

These stutters are really annoying, could be autosaving but it happens when I shoot people standing still. We should test it out by dying once it stutters to see if we get shot to an earlier point or to the point where it stuttered.
