Currently I'm running VLC but I'm wondering if I should give something else a try. I wanted to play an old video file with an uncommon codec and came across MPlayer (couldn't figure out how to get it running). running win10

VLC and Plex Home Theater work wonders for me. If VLC can't play it back, I toss it at handbrake and convert it to a format that VLC does understand.

This holds true across Linux / Windows / OS X / iOS / android for me xD

Plex & VLC for me too.

Poll for media player without Plex is not a good poll.

VLC is fine if you don't have a clue. And the rest of those players might as well be malware. Everyone who cares about quality uses MPC-HC.

MPC-HC.

JRiver (also MadVR compatible, like MPC-HC and MPC-BE) is popular as a paid all-in-one.

I stopped using MadVR simply because I was too lazy to set it up this last OS re-install. Meh... probably increases power consumption a bit anyway.

My friend swears by GOM player because it felt the fastest to him, esp. with regard to seeking behavior... I'll admit that I liked it several years back. I don't know what has become of it.

On my gaming rig I just use WMP because it's there. On my media pc attached to my tv, I use Titan media skin for Kodi (formerly xbmc)

GOM Player did play some broken FLV videos that couldn't be played in MPC-HC or VLC. But the installer at the time (a couple of years ago) was a bit sketchy and you had to be careful not to install crapware.

MPC and Plex user. Only time I use MPC though is when I'm traveling and need something to play offline video that I've brought along on USB or external hard drive for my laptop.

I use either VLC or MPC-HC + lavfilters
any DVD or Blu-ray content gets done via VLC, anything with stereo audio gets played with MPC-HC due to VLC's annoying new "feature" of stereo expansion to all 5.1 speakers. (didn't used to do that, can't figure out how to turn it off)

MPC-HC on Windows and SMPlayer on Linux, personally. Sometimes VLC for playback of DVDs/BDs. Overall, though, I don't really like VLC that much. I'm surprised and slightly sad to see it winning.

MPC with Smooth Video Project for video and Foobar2000 for high def audio.
I also play both directly on my Oppo 105 cos it can, and hi def audio sounds a little clearer without the PC and extra connections.
But its not so convenient playing direct so for general use, my first line above is it.

MPC-HC replaced the internal filters with lavfilters starting with version 1.7.0 and continues to update them; the current version 1.7.8 comes with lavfilters 63.0.52, apparently just one version behind the current version 64 of lavfilters.

Ah, neat, didn't know that.
Will probably keep lavfilters around for Win Media Center though as I do occasionally play .wtv files recorded on the HTPC on the desktop.

Though that reminds me, i've got to do a serious cleanup on the HTPC, it's codec set is more than a bit out of date. (I think it's still running an old version of ffdshow)

On the HTPC, Zoom Player as you can customize almost any part of it. Desktop MPC-HC, but I'm also experimenting with Media Player .NET

VLC, it plays everything I throw at it

the linux audio server is running audacious, kind of a winamp clone...its OK

I've been a long time user of Zoom Player. So far I have not had any issues with it and like the interface / options.
