My son, Simon, and I went to the World Cyber Games in San Francisco Saturday, and Simon, who is nine years old, got a frag on Johnathan 'Fatal1ty' Wendel in the Fatal1ty Shootout. This is pretty rare. In fact there was only one other contestant frag in the whole four days of the Shootout. In Lancaster, England in early September there were no contestant frags at all http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=18261, and that is the way the Shootouts usually seem to go. Fatal1ty - all; everyone else - less than nothing.
Anyway, the room erupted when Simon Fragged Fatal1ty with his shotgun. No one could believe it. People were hooting and hollering and flabbergasted.
Simon held his own and almost got one more, but Fatal1ty, of course finished him off. It was a great day. Simon was on Cloud 9 (he played his Hero), and walked away with an Audigy 2 ZS (it will replace his on-board sound), Shadow Ops (He'd been playing the demo-loves it), and Hitman (He gave it to me, the box was too scary).
One last thing: Johnathan 'Fatal1ty' Wendel is one heck of a nice guy. He is a kind, gracious young man with no 'attitude', and while it is truly awesome to watch him work Doom 3, it is equally awesome that he is such a good role model for Simon and other kids to look up to.

Hmm, the same Cloud 9 that won the CTF tourny at Quakecon 2003 and placed 2nd in 2004? If so, i'm not surprised. That is one bunch of talented guys. Congrats.

lol, I think he means Cloud 9 like in the saying, "I'm on Cloud 9," rather than the e-sports team.

That's really awesome. Very uplifting story! :D It's also neat to hear that Fatal1ty is such a cool person. It always seemd like he was in the interviews he's participated in. Congrats to your son.

That is good news to hear about him. Hopefully he will have a positive impact on the kids coming up in this generation. So many poor sports now days since kids and adults alike can hide in the anonymity of the Internet.

Great thread Texxxxx, and good post as well.

Any plans for Simon in the future of gaming?

I think we've turned a corner here. Remember back in the day when a dad would talk about how his son did in a basketball game, or in a little league game, with the neighborhood guys. Now, organized gameing has been around long enough to where a dad can boast about how well his son did in a particular game tournament. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, it's just new territory I think. Pretty soon, gamers will be getting scholarships to major universitys. And I'm sure if I have a son who is succesful in the gaming world, I will be his biggest fan. :)

Yeah I wish my hero was someone who plays computer games all day "professionally".. ohh my godnesss there is a door..it leads to the OUTSIDE WORLD!

The only "impact" that he has/will have is that more and more kids will now sit in the the house all day wasting their lives and ruining their eyesite.. did anyone here even go to their highschool prom?
..
And the research that I have found shows that johnathan wendel(or whatever) charges the media for interviews ect. So obviously whatever front he put on during the LAN is not what he truely thinks of himself. Did you not catch the documentary on MTV? He came off more arrogant than any real professional sports star.

Did your cheerios taste funny this morning?

I personaly dont like the way he plays. He bogarts the health and armor and when he takes a hit he runs away to get more. I would like to play him in a game with no health and no armor, I dont think he would do as good. He personaly does not have that great of aim, and uses his 150 armor and 150 health to keep him alive during a shoot out. I say he plays like a coward, and that is why nobody can kill him. Hard to kill what runs away. As for a person, dont know never talked to him (as none of you realy have either) so we realy cant say what type of person he is.

As for gaming, games have actualy increased hand eye cordnation as well has increase the analitical, problem solving skills. Games do improve quite alot and are good for kids to play, when played in moderation.

I live and work in the "outside world" and I spend 8-12 hours a day either in front of a computer screen in my cubicle or in a classroom. Comments like this are just dumb.

I don't see video game playing any different than other "legitimate" games. I think it compares to chess or bridge, things like that. Would you say a young man pursuing greatness in chess is wasting their life? It's just a different game to obsess on, but no less valid because it's newer than other games.

Actually some people do think pursuing chess professionally is a waste. Devil's advocate.
I think it's pretty hardcore myself. Tough racket for sure.

I didn't go to any dance my whole 4 years of High School....why? Because I have better things to do than spend a fuck-ton of money on a tuxedo rental, car and all the other associated bullshit that comes along with high school dances.

Looks like someone needs a Grilled STFU burrito from Taco Hole.

Yeah, well, some people also think doing ANYTHING other than watching every football game in a season (and taping them!) while drinking their PBR 'is a waste'.

Using the 'some people' argument doesn't hold water, here. Hell, MOST people fall far short of any kind of intelligence standard.

I'm not too sure on that.. while it would be cool for fathers' bragging rights, but for getting a gaming scholarship into univerisities? I don't think universities give out chess scholarships...

It's called strategy. If you're unable to adapt to his playing field or turn it into your own, then you won't be any better if there was no health.

Well flaming people for no reason isn't a good way to start off a new [H] account

Just because someone's good at gaming or looks up to a gamer, doesn't mean he doesn't go outside at all. I'd say him looking up to a professional gamer is better than him idolizing some fictional television character.

Of course he charges for interviews. He's a proffessional gamer. He has to make money somehow. And who better to take it from than the fucking media.

I think the fact that he does that makes him smarter than the rest of us. At least more strategic. I'd stay alive alot longer if I did that. Instead I do as much damage as possible. I'll take a few deaths here and there to ensure a higher frag count. It's just the way he chooses to play it. He'd rather not get killed and he picks his battles carefully. He'd rather wait them out.

It works. Is it what I call fun? Not really. But alot of people who compete proffessionaly in games don't play for fun. It's more like a job to them. It's when you turn off AA and AF and go to 800x600 for that extra competetive edge that detracts from the experience.

While you can make money doing it, I think those people miss the point of games. That is to be immersed and to enjoy yourself.

I think alot of us might be able to take them if we could have circumstances in a particular game exactly the way we'd prefer and seem to do best. You get him at his worst and yourself at your best you might could do it.

But it doesn't matter until it happens.

This is why he wins and is the best, and you don't get paid to give interviews.

WTF mate? Your grilling him because when he gets hit he goes to get more health? Doesn't that seem like the most logical thing to do, instead of gambling with no armor, etc. on getting hit again? He has a good strategy - if you were better, you'd be good enough to hit him again before he had time to get more armor.

I've talked to Johnathan a few times about business opportunities and have found him to be intelligent and gracious. He really understands what kind of fortune he has to be able to play games for a living. During the show he said that he wanted to start sponsoring other pro gamers so they can live the same dream he is. So, he flew 4 guys from around the world out to WCG to compete against eachother for about 6 grand worth of gear. Not too shabby, if you ask me.

Everything in life needs balance. That is up to parents to teach that and encourage that. Back in my high school days, not everyone went to the prom either...some of us went out and partied and got drunk. I guess, if push came to shove, I would want my kids to go to a LAN on prom night instead of the crap I did. Of course, going to the prom would be preferable to not going.

So what, that's how he makes a living. I didn't watch the interview, but going by what the original poster said about him, he is protraying a good attitude. That's is what counts. If he was a jackass during these incidents that would rub off on todays kids. There is enough cocky litte pricks running around unchecked. The thing is that no one checks them on it, so it keeps happening and we arrive at today, where cockyness is the norm. When upcoming kids see Fatal1ty showing good sportsmanship and pleasant attitude, it shows them that "nice guys" do finish first once in a while.

Ok...this is getting too deep, so I am shutting up.

Im sorry, I call that cheeze. I come from games with no health/armour. And know to stay until the job is done. What kind of game is it where everyone shoots a few shots and runs away. I am not saying his tatic does not work, just that it is cheap and boring. Then again like people say he is playing for a job not fun. People always say dont make your hobby your job becuase you will start to hate both.

You use what you've got around to get the job done. If you need more health you get. It. What games are you talking about that don't give you health and armor? Lemmings? Pong?

Every FPS with the exception of CS give you these things.

There is no such this as a cheap tatic in a shootout, you do what you need to WIN.

Remember the golf gamer from the MTV documentry? Wow, now that was a waste of skin.

As for your son fragging a pro gamer that's awesome, congrats.

And for being a pro gamer, honestly I think its pretty lame but hey if you can make money doing it, support yourself and open doors for other people in a whole new profession then more power to you.

It's not like he can run away faster than you can chase him either. Kill him when he's running. And it's not like he just found an exploit of a game. Hasn't he been one of the best in quite a few games?

i think just quake 3 and doom 3, maybe UTK2k3/4, basically all deathmatch games. I heard he failed miserably in counter-strike or any other team based game.

He didn't fail miserably... i'd probably say he would fit in with the lower cal-i and that definatly isn't failing miserably. CS takes a little bit of time to really get to the top.

i reffed the cloud 9 games and MD, both great clans at quakecon, they are pretty cool people to talk too. about fatality, he does time the armor and health tremendously, but thats called strategy, if it wont me thousands of dollars for playing a game i would too..

your 9 year-old son's hero is a video game player  that's bad
aside from the fact that I think you are taking what was said entirely too literally...
who would you suggest as a good hero/rolemodel for a 9 year old boy?

How is it that choosing as a role model someone who does something, that you yourself enjoy, very well is bad?

Congratulations to your son Texxxx, and I think it's great that you and he have a common hobby and can enjoy an event like that together.

Jonathan is a cool guy.

He used to go to a LAN in KC every three months or so in Kansas City when I used to live in Missouri.

He'd drive his Alien VS. Predator focus there and just destroy people in Quake III and UT 2k4 all night, and he even played some CS.

He is really laid back, and cool, I agree.

I've never gotten a frag on him though :p
