yea ive recently noticed that my current hdd (some cheap 80 gig model..dont know specs for it) is full. in fact at the time of writing this i have about 57 megs left on it o_o im going to be deleting some things, but inevitably its going to fill up again in the next couple of months. what im asking is whats a good hdd for trade off in terms of size and speed/data access etc? im looking for something like 120-150 gigs..something that i wont use up in a year. its for use with things like gaming and storing large amounts of music and things of that nature. help? thx ^^

I like Samsung HDs for ATA.... They're very quiet, and my Samsung 160GB is much faster than my WD Caviar SE 120GB according to HDTune. Both are 7200RPM 8MB cache SATA models.

hmm thx. i have one other question, my current model is a very average to low end type of drive. i think its either 4 or 6 mb cache..what exactly is the cache and would a larger one (the ones ive been looking at are usually 8) improve performance at all?

i might be wrong but i never heard of 4 or 6 mb cache its usually 2 or 8 for 7200 rpm

i rember the big deal when the companies started making the 8mb cache hds

HDs try to figure out what data they will need to access before they need to access it, so they take their best guess and store it in cache, since it's so much faster than the HD. If you had a low end drive, you'd have 2MB. 8MB cache is pretty noticable when you game.

Hard drive performance has very little to do with gaming....as it may only make a very slight difference in level load times. When buying a hard drive, you want to consider capacity and stability. Given that, I recommend anything by Western Digital, with 8 MB of cache, of the interface that you need.

I recommend avoiding WD. People will tell you that HDs are all just as reliable as each other these days, but if you ask me, Caviar SEs die almost as often as Deathstars. I had one die recently in < 1 year and I know several people who have had the same happen.

Samsung or Seagate all the way. They're quieter, too. And, like I've said before, my Samsungs benchmark a hell of a lot faster than my WD when the specs are comparable.
