Fast bleeding trick for T-lines

After staring at my T-line bleeding veeeeeeeeeery slowly for the first 10 or so minutes, I had an idea. Once the huge bubbles are purged, most of the air in the lines was in the form of smaller bubbles which flow close to the center of the tubing. This means they don't have a very good chance of escaping when they pass the T-line. Pinching the line to slow the flow only helped for a couple medium sized bubbles, but all the fine stuff was still trapped (and gurgling loudly). Switching the pump on and off helped a bit, but again, not a lot.

So I had an idea: obstruct the flow in the middle using a "snake". Zip ties turned out to be perfect for the job. Four in a row (and trimmed neatly) extended into the flow, and bled the system COMPLETELY and effortlessly in less than two hours! (It might have been quicker, because I went to bed after watching it working for a couple minutes.) Pic below

Of course, make it long enough that you can actually pull it out when you're done! :p

Turn the pump off, and fish the snake into the tubing so that it extends upstream from the T-line. (If the pump is on when you're fishing the snake in, it'll tend to get sucked downstream instead of upstream.) That way, it creates a "ramp" for the center part of the flow to be diverted into the T-line, where it swirls and releases the bubbles before reentering the flow.

Yes, that's old school hardware. I'm just trying out a few ideas on this (disposable) rig before my next build. And yes, I know my T-line is horizontal. Once it's bled, it doesn't matter.
 
What a totally awesome idea! Matter o'fact my pump on my new build is running now hopefully sending more air into the T but doing a lot of the center tube air bubble thing last I checked. Thankfully my T is near the top, a ziptie is going down the hole when I get home. Thanks!
 
Is that the normal orientation of your case (exhaust of the ATX case on the bottom/floor)? If you have you case set upright (or in a normal position), then your T-line would be horizontal instead of vertical, which is most likely why the smaller bubbles would not get bled. For others that have this problem (in a normal T-line orientation), your suggestion should greatly speed up the last bleeding left for them.

LOL - no that is not the normal orientation of my case. It's also not normal for me not to have any PCI/AGP cards installed either. :p The case has been sitting on its back for the entire build/leak test/bleed process. It has never been put in the "normal" orientation with the expectation that bubbles would bleed through a (horizontal) T-line; that would be silly! :p
 
Is the tubing "boiled" on ? I am freaked that I dont see any clamps !!!

Nice touch with the clear connectors, expensive suckers. Oops not completely clear. NM. Still looks good tho.
 
7/16 Masterkleer on 1/2" fittings. I was a little freaked at first because it goes on the metal fittings pretty smoothly - just a little wiggling at the end. Definitely needed the boiling water for the polypro fittings (they might be nylon - I'm).

Leak tested for over 24 hours without a drop anywhere, and still no sign of leakage.

Well, I kind of inherited some parts, and the others were laying around from a previous project. I'm getting my "feet wet" in preparation for a new build in a couple months. But yeah, it's some classic old school hardware. Hey, all I need it for is running Kile and Firefox (grad student here), and it does that just fine. Thanks for the SMART and OLDFART nominations! :D Maybe they could be combined into one "SMART OLDFART" award. :cool:
 
Naw, cant do that for a grad student, the coveted dual combined SMART OLDFART is reserved for people that are stiff and sore, groan and moan they get out of bed every morning without having been out drinking the night before.

I am concerned now, the boiled ones, ok, but I suggest the wiggle on ones really really should have clamps when you next mess with it.

Well, the only ones that were literally "wiggle on" are the EK barbs on the pump. The block has DD barbs that have a larger OD. They were "boil on" too, but not quite as tough as the plastic fittings. The pump isn't in a high risk location on the case floor, so it's not going to be catastrophic even if it does leak. I check it a couple times a day.

That said, I've been waiting til the next time I am near Lowes to pick up some hoseclamps. Part of me want to take the risk though, because as it stands if I fry this board, CPU, and even graphic card (I've got other disposable GPUs laying around), I can give the whole system a substantial upgrade for not much more than $100. Using obsolete hardware is very liberating! Also, the WAF of such a replacement is relatively high right now, so I really have very little downside. :D
 
I still say that is the greatest mobo ever manufactured. :)

Nice setup! getting mad OC on there?
