Fast 19" LCD Round-Up!

If anyone wants, I will post shots later..

Shots would be great. My biggest concern with buying the FP931 is the relatively low contrast ratio - how black do deep blacks actually look, when the monitor is set bright enough to show whites nicely?

The VX910 is 16ms, not 25ms. The VX900 is 25 though. It is awesome, and I haven't seen ghosting at all, and I usually see it pretty quickly on other screens. I'm a huge CS player, plus I have Doom3, and there is no banding or tearing at all, even at lower resolutions then the recommended one.

Well, I just set up my new VX910. Awesome! Geez , compared to my ol 17" crt...I have a few questions though...I am using a DVI cable to my 6800 GT , the refresh is 60hz. I assume thats where it should stay since it gives no other options?

Also...i have heard people mention "True Type" before with LCD displays, does it automatically use this or do i need to enable it...cause ive been everywhere in XP and cant find anything . Is this something you only use with LCD's? ( sounds dumb but ive never used it i guess) .

Also, havent tried games yet but will this eve...Is it normal for the mouse cursor to blur slightlyon lcd's when moving it fast across the screen? Colors and everything seem perfect right out of the box, but this is my first LCD display ive ever used and not sure if there is anything im missing in setting it up besides the drivers....

I am thinking that it will do 75Mhz,you have to go into advanced setting and under the monitor tab uncheck the box"Hide modes this monitor cannot display" and then set it for 75Mhz.Anyways,mine supports up to 75Mhz and I had to do the same thing.

Don't know about "True Type",never heard of it.

The mouse pointer blurring is normal I believe, every LCD I have had does it anyways.

Clear type is a windows xp thing - it's a mode of smoothing text that helps make it more clear on some LCDs. To enable it right click on the desktop go to properties > appearance > effects then where it says "Use the following effect to sharpen text" scroll down to Clear Type.

Thanks! :) This is the most beaultiful display i've ever looked at. Man...what i've been missing...

Glad you like it,I was looking at Viewsonic LCD's also but decided on a Samsung 193P instead.

too lazy to read through this whole thread but has anyone seen the VP192B ?

still don't know why anyone would want a 19" when 17" panels run the same resolution

Well one reason might be the 2 more viewable inches? I dunno. :p

Personally the 1280x1024 thing was a positive for me for two reasons. The first is that that's the resolutions I currently run games at, and I am comfortable with it and second I prefer text size at 1280x1024. I understand the benefits of 1600x1200, I just don't think it's a must on a 19 inch monitor.

yes it's 2 more inches, but the resolution is the same

to me it's almost as practical as getting a 17" screen and putting a big magnifying class in front of it

Well this Viewsonic plays games perfect. No ghosting effects whatsoever. I have found though the darks just dont look real dark in Doom , not like they should any way. Adjusting brightness( on the monitor) helps a bit, if i turn it all the way down. Wish i could get my blacks...black.

I think its funny reading about cleartype now. I had tried out several other LCD's before buying my Sony SDM-HS94p and went through the whole cleartype ordeal... adjusting cleartype on Microsoft.com and agonizing over which tiny difference in setting made the text look better. It was kind of like going to the eye doctor and going through the "does it look better with lense #1 or #2" experience. In the end you get something that you think looks good... then you turn cleartype off and you start agonizing over whether that is better or not... arggggghhhhh

With the Sony, text is sooooo clear... turning on cleartype is almost funny (why would I want that fuzzy text on my screen)... Buying the Sony is like getting your first pair of glasses... (oh... so that's what it's all supposed to look like....:)

I agree,I tried it on mine and the text just got real fuzzy.

what other LCDs did you try?

you've got me thinking about the 17" version

I suppose - I guess it's just a matter of preference then.

Got to play some games on the BenQ and did not notice any ghosting. Colors look good to me. Love the way the 19" screen allows me to put the monitor further back so that I have room for my keyboard. Much easier to see than a 17" would be.

Links to some pics I took with alt / printscreen and my camera.

The pics I took with the camera will be off on some of the color. You notice it in the shots showing the Hardforums cause the monitor does not look silver on the case. I also did not take a pic of the front as I needed to use the flash in the room I am in and the flash would just create glare on the monitor screen.

Unless I'm mistaken, pics taken with alt-printscreen are useless in terms of showing what the monitor can/can't do, since software-based screenshots don't depend on what monitor is currently connected. As I understand it, all that the printscreen function does is put a copy of whatever's currently in the framebuffer onto the clipboard - it has no way of knowing how the image looks coming out of your screen. For example, I could take two screenshots of the same desktop, one with a crappy 15 inch monitor connected that doesn't even display greens anymore, and one with a brand new LCD connected - if both of the resulting images are later viewed with a single monitor, they should look identical.

That said, the digicam pics are great. What games did you try out?

Thanks for letting me know that. I always thought they took a shot of what you saw as it is on your monitor, exactly as it is. I will try to get my camera and take some pics in the daylight today so that the fluorescent lights do not affect them.

I played MOH, BFV, Doom 3, Farcry. Have not tried UT2004 yet as I have to reinstall it.

Let's add the NEC/Mitsubishi RDT194S to our list of fast 19" monitors...

Has anyone else seen new fast 19" monitors that weren't mentioned in the first few posts of this thread?

I just bought a Benq FP937S yesterday. 19'' 12 ms. Seems very nice so far.

The only thing that may be a drawback for some is the 130/130 viewing angle. Im only ever in one position in front of the computer so its a non-issue for me.

I decided when I bought my Samsung 193P with 20ms that the little higher response time was worth the trade off to get the 178/178 viewing angle. Now when I watch DVD's no matter where I am looking at the screen from the picture is always perfectly clear, which is helpful when the whole family is sitting around it to watch a movie. Also the 8bit screen and 1000:1 contrast ratio are nice pluses too and it's very stylish.

A larger viewing angle would be nice, but I don't ever watch DVDs on computer so for me the response time was the biggest factor.

I looked at the BenQ's,they're very nice, especially for the price.I wouldn't mind the 12ms response time, but I wanted a more balanced LCD.Do you know if that model has 16.7 million colors or does it have less?

So, anyone here know if the Viewsonic VP912b is actually being sold anywhere yet? Looks interesting, but I can't find anywhere that is selling it.

No problem. The fact that you didn't notice any ghosting in games as new as those is quite promising; have you tried watching any DVDs on it yet? I'm still concerned about the contrast ratio, so since someone else on the forum noticed no-so-great blacks in Doom 3 on their Viewsonic, would you be willing to look for that on your BenQ? Thanks.

Where'd you get it, and how much was it?
Would you mind posting a mini-review?

Sorry it's taken me awhile to get back to this thread. After a week of playing with my Benq FP931, I've determined it flat out rocks. It took me some time to get used to the lower refresh rate than my old CRT. Ghosting is very minimal, the only games I've experienced anything to the like of it were UT2k4 and the HL mod Specialists. War3 is phenomenal, and the contrast, though only 450:1, looks better than my 21' Trinitron. The blacks are BLACK, and the whites are white. Grayscale is just fine. I really have no complaints. It took me a few days to adjust in the refresh rate difference going from 100hz to 72hz. The monitor itself looks great. It doesn't get overly bright, I keep it on the highest setting all the time. I picked this screen up for 550$, I game avidly, and I have no complaints. It has handled everything I've thrown at it. BUT, do not use the bundled VGA cable. I experienced much better performance getting a quality DVI cable. Note that no DVI cable is bundled. The color with the DVI, as well as the brightness, is far superior.

PM me any questions, or for pics.

Picked it up at Futureshop for $850 CDN.

Didn't have a clue if it came with a dvi cable so I opened the box at the store and was pleasantly suprised to see both vga AND dvi cables.

Got her home, set it up, and turned it on. All looks great. No dead pixels that I can see. Windows text is clear and sharp. Full brightness is too bright for me with a white background.

Next step, games. Fired up some Doom3. I play in 1024 so its out of native resolution. It looks great. A few jaggies here and there on some things but over all much better than I expected out of native. Refresh is good.. not quite as good as a high-refresh CRT, but still nice. One thing to note playing doom is you have to basically turn contrast and brightness to full, and the game brightness up, otherwise the blacks are WAY TOO BLACK...

Also played a bit of Farcry and things seemed good there too.

I guess my only desire would be a slightly larger viewing angle, but seeing as I do not watch movies on it, its not a big deal.

All in all I am satisfied.. was considering a Sony but that would have been minimum $300 more factoring in a DVI cable purchase.

I actuallly am enjoying Doom on my Viewsonic now...i just lowered the brightness a bit and changed contrast a little. For instance...the black on this web page is beautiful now :)

I have been enjoying things on my PC i seem to have gotten bored with a long time ago, just cause it blows me a way to look at them now. This thing was well worth every penny imo. I've been glued to this thing since i got off work Friday night. :p

Hi
I am looking to get the 193p as well; however some negative reviews about the monitor sinking to the bottom because of its weight has me somewhat concerned. I would like to know if anyone has had any experience with the monitor moving over time.
thanks, michael

Anyone tried the Philips 190S5CB? (listed on the first page)

I might be buying that one in the near future, read some good things about it, just wanted to see if anyone could confirm it's a good monitor,:).

I have one,I have had it for a week and no problems at all.I read a ton of reviews and none of them were neg on a whole, but I believe one did mention the arm not being tight enough, but that was out of alot of reviews.Anyways,it's a very elegant monitor,it has awesome color and the viewing angle is the best along with the high contrast. It also comes with all the hardware to mount it on a wall and includes both cables(DVI & Sub).I can send you a pic of it in action if you like.

Chris

Thanks Chris!
I guess they may have had the problems in the early production models, or it was one bad stand in the bunch.
michael

No problem at all,I am glad I could help.If you do decide to get it I guarantee you will not be disappointed.Yeah that one reviewer must have recieved a bum one, even the one review I read that mentioned it just said it was easy to move and not stiff enough, but the weight of the screen was still being held up where he set it.Let me know what you think of it if you get it.

Go here for more pics and reviews if you haven't already.

I think that "review" monitor suffered a lot of abuse being passed around to all the different review sites. When I got mine, I noticed how tight the stand/arm was. However, since I wall mounted mine, I cannot comment about it moving over time. Wall mounting is really NICE :D

Trustno1.... I'd recommend against buying the Phillips 1905... search for my earlier review of it...
