'FarmVille' Helping Game Developers

Great, now even more people will be asking me to join their stupid farm game.

On first view, it would seem that the devs don't make money, seeing how they have to pay FB, MS or whatever social networking site they put their games on.

But I would think zynga (farmville, mafia wars, vampire wars just to name a few) ARE making money. There's a large percentage of people playing these games who spend money for extra "favor" points (don't know what they're called in farmville - but vampires uses favor points).

Basically yeah, these people are "buying" the game or an advantage in the game. But it does help keep things up and running, pays staff, etc.

There's actually been a ton of games added to fb in the last year. A lot of them knock-offs, maybe not as well done, but they are there. So somebody besides fb must be making some money!

Personally? I wish they would just go stand-alone with their games (zynga that is). Have a free and a "premium" membership or something.

I'm about ready to just close out my fb account. Things are just too out of control in too many ways. And now they want to add in geonavigation right on their site so people know where you're logging in from.

First serious Facebook-Based MMO is probably going to be huge.

I remember reading about a Pokemon MMO based on Facebook, -of course, it was just a fan's idea, but I thought the rough idea of a MMO based on flash would be a huge success.

Farmville? :p

Don't the rake in the money by spying on your personal details and selling them to advertisers?

do the guys who made Farmville make any money off it?

Surely a few of those 80 million people spend real money on the Farmville dollars, whatever they're called.

What's more, don't they get a cut of the ads viewed while playing their games? Not sure on that one.

I have to admit that I'm a Farmville addict. It happened about 6 months ago when a friend convinced me to give it a try...

I can't say what it is about the 'game' that keeps me interested. I guess it's the sandbox nature and the fact that you can devote as little or as much time as you want to it.

"Farmville Bucks", and yeah I'll admit to spending around $30 on the game in the last six months or so just to pick up unique items that I know very few others will have on their farms.

*hangs head in shame*

I went from hardcore gamer in my twenties to grandpa gamer in my thirties... I just don't know what happened.

If I ever see an app-generated notification on a friend's status, I Hide with extreme prejudice. Haven't been bothered by Farmville in months. Nor Vampire Wars nor Mafia Wars nor quizzes of any size or shape.

farmville is such a waste of time. games on windows 3.11 look better than that and have more interesting things to do.

Yeah, there are some things in the game that are locked to you unless you pay real money for them, like bigger fuel tanks and larger land if you don't have enough friends to unlock the free expansion and so on.

I'm sure people pay real money for these farm cash items.

I don't play the Facebook games, but everytime I see Farmville crap popping up, I wonder why people don't just go play the real classic: SimFarm.

HA! I remember that one, it was fun when I was a kid - although I remember crashing the crop duster more than half the times I flew it. Great game though.

From a developer's standpoint, Farmville makes a ton of sense. It's so simple to pick up, addictive, and while it's free in the beginning, I'm sure they make a ton off of ad revenue and if people pay for things then it's all gravy.

That being said, fuck that game for spamming my facebook because no, I do not want to be your neighbor because the game is retarded.

we oughta put our collective minds together and make a Facebook game and make money off it

even split brothers, even split!

Global Thermonuclear War (or whatever the title of the 80s PC game was) remake.

It's probably teaching them how horrible of an idea it is to make a game with flash. I have a pretty good PC and fullscreen it runs at about 5-6fps

Nothing wrong with making games with Flash if you know what you're doing. The Farmville developer needs a lesson or two in Flash optimization.

Pogo, MSN Games and various retro games that uses Flash works just fine without using up all of your system resources.
