I'm currently using an Antec Case with a 120mm fan up front and another in the back, but I'm shopping around for a new case. A lot of the cases I like have 2 80mm fans in front and 2 in back. Has anyone had experience with both? Will I notice similar cooling with the 2 80s? Better cooling? Noisier? etc.

Any info on the differences would be appreciated.
 
what fans do you have in your current case? what fans are in the case that you are looking at?

bezel design and HDD position makes more of a difference than that fans themselves, for the front fans.

i like 120mm fans, because the noise is low frequency, and i find it to be less noticeable, however if' you're going from loud 120 mm fans that move lots of air, to quiet 80 mm fans that don't move so much air........well you know........

panasonic panaflo fans are robust, and move good air/noise, and have various speed/performance levels for each size of fan. vantec stealth fans are quieter than the quietest panasonic, but only come in one speed per size.

You care about CFM which is the amount of air the fan moves. Higher the number the better. The only other thing you will want to notice is the dBa, thats the noise level, higher it is the louder the fan. 120mm are ideal for the reason that was stated, more air with a lower noise, but if you dont care, there are perfectly capable 80mm fans that will do great cooling. These come at the cost of making your PC sound like a jet engine running low RPM. If your cable management sucks (like me) in your cases you'll want the maximum amount of fans to keep airflow up, which ever you can fit more of. For example, 4 80mm rated at 50CFM would be better then 1 120mm at 80CFM. Hope that helps.
 
cfm goes up the dba goes up but if cfm goes up and dba doesnt then the msrp will go up :D

my Tt blower rumbles like a 747-400 taking off at full trottle. my desk shakes too when the blower is at full blast.

*Grumble*...Silent Boost that's louder than my stock cooler...*Grumble*
 
RIght now I'm using 2 120mm Antec Smartcool fans. I find they are really silent and keep my system very cool. I even got a 92mm one for my cpu and xp-90 heatsink. I did have a Zalman fan on my CPU, but even in Silent mode, I could hear it from the other room.

I don't know of Antec smartcools come in 80mm, but I would probably buy a few and try different brands until I found one I liked, but now my rig is very silent and cool.
 
The larger the fan, the quieter it will be while pushing same ammount of air.

Most people would claim that Vantec Stealths are actually very noisy and are just rebadged fans from another company.

re-branded, yes. they are nidec fans, i believe.

noisy? luck of the draw, i guess..........the pickiest person about noise that i know uses them, and thinks that they are quiet enough.

I dunno....my thermaltake fans are dead silent...when they're off... :p I think that's the closest they get to thermaltake's rated specs.

yea i dont like how TT tests their fan's specs. I remeber back when the Silent Boost had just come out, everyone found out that it was just a rebadged Panaflo but magically b/c TT got their hands on it, the fan lost 7 dBa :rolleyes:

 
I have two Vantec Stealth fans, one 60mm in my HTPC rig and a 80mm on my sons CPU heat sink. The 80mm fan is quiet, not as quiet as my Panaflo L1 (Japan version) but quiet enough. The 60mm Stealth is another story, that thing has serious bearing whine at 12 volts so I put it at 6 volts via a rheostat. Much better, does not flow much but it is quiet now.
I hear the 92mm Stealths are quite noisy, after hearing the 60mm version I can believe it. If you want to get an idea of fan noise, go to silentpcreview.com and read about their recommended fans.
