I did a little searching about intake/exhaust, but i wanted an opinion directed towards me. I decided to get that 40$ w/ rebate case from frys, but didn't have intentions of using it at first, but then i ended up upgrading, and didn't want to use my old case since it was a piece of junk. Anyways, there is a front spot for an 80mm fan & a back spot for a 120mm fan, however there is also an air duct on the side of the case, but i planned on taking that off and adding another 80mm fan. Okay, so right now i have an e4400 w/ stock cooler, but planned on getting the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme w/ a yate loon 120mm, when i buy two 120mm(1 being the yate loon) & the two 80mm, so basically i want to know which fans would be better as intake and which as exhaust. Originally i was just going to make the front & back exhaust while the side be an intake... but i wasn't 100% sure.

here is a link to the case:

thanks in advance :)

front should be an intake with your primary hard drive mounted so that it is dead in the middle of the fan if possible. If two hard drives mount them so one lines up with the bottom 1/3 of the fan and skip a bay and mount the second lined up with the top 1/3 of the fan.

You can mount a 80mm fan on the side panel and still use the vent to blow cool air into your stock cooler until you get the new HS. You just mount the fan between the side panel (on the inside) and mount the vent to the fan. When the new cooler shows up remove the vent. I you have to due to the size of the new cooler, move the fan to the outside of the side panel.

Back exhaust.

Fair case, I like 120mm fans, shame there is not one in the front , a jigsaw with a metal blade would make that happen, use a cd as a hole template. Actually with that heatsink a bay cooler that replaces some of your 5 /14 bays with a fan would work very well, kinda a straight shot of air from the front panel of the machine right into the thermalright and out the back exhaust and you would not then need to open up the lower front 80mm.

thanks for the response :)

by bay cooler, do you mean something like this?

also right now i have a single hd, but i have it mounted where the A drive typically would go instead of at the bottom. i figured this would save me the trouble have having to take it out to mount the fan :>

exactamondo just what I was thinking about. It should work great but I am not sure how much noise will be generated. Scythe's susposed to be fairly quiet but a lot of people have the machine on the desk next to them so /shrug. Another thing you can do is just hold off on it till you get your HS in. Once you get everything else set up and have a chance to see how the temps run, you pull out about 3 blank drive covers and see if the hole created helps cool that zalman. If you temps go down a fair amount you can be sure that bay fan will do gangbusters. If they dont then you are probally fine as is.

no worries, about the drive and it could stay there if its not getting too awfull hot.

or wait till your fan comes and then move it down. I like the drives in the "way" of the front fans (but without blocking alll the air which is why I was so particular in describing where to put them) so they get cooled with some air but let most of it by to help airflow in the case.

If that drive is not hot to the touch, you can put your finger on the metal case of it and count to 5 slow, dont worry about it too much, just up to you if you want to mess with it, if its fairly hot, I would get it in front of a fan for long life.
