Fan direction oc question

I have a corsair h50 water cooler, and I know they say to blow in air from outside into the case, but I am wondering if my setup would change that. I need your thoughts on it.

I just bought the corsair obsidian 800d case, and just put my system into the case.

I have the 3 140mm fans in their stock place, one cooling the hds, one blowing air in from down below and one blowing air out the back of the case.

I installed 2 120mm fans on the roof of the case blowing out, and the last 120mm hole I put another 120mm fan and then the rad, and the fan is blowing air out through the rad out the roof.

What are your guys thoughts on this? Should I swap the fan on the rad to blow in or not?

And should I be doubling up the fans pushing/pulling on the rad?
 
Make sure your airflow is going in one direction. If it is coming in the front and blowing out the back/top, the CPU should also be blowing out the back/top.
 
Ok, thank you. That is what it is doing. theres 3 120mm holes on the roof of my case, and all 3 are blowing out side the case , one of the holes has the rad bolted up.

Just was looking for better cooling temps. hitting 66c using prime 95 at 3.6ghz
 
I would make sure that you have your air flow in same direction, ie air in front, out top / back , dont reverse directions on a side. Best bet i would say would be shot it out, dont pull in since you have some good airflow coming into that case....however if you the time try it in the other direction just to see what happens, who knows it may improve(though I doubt this)
 
It is inarguable that feeding the rad the cooler room air will provide the best performance. The downside to that is the warm air introduced into the case. You have more than sufficient airflow with all those fans to easily solve that problem.

Based on your fan location description if it where me, I would replace the rear exhaust 140mm fan (there are also holes for a 120mm fan at that location) with the H20 fan/rad with the fan blowing cooler room air through the rad into the case. Those 120mm top fans will immedately suck the introduced warm air out of the case.
 
I would tend to agree with Bill that you could get away with mounting the rad at the back and having cool air come over it from outside and go right out the top. Push/pull shouldn't matter much if you have a decent fan and should matter even less if you're talking about outside air coming over your rad-if you have enough fan to move the air, the suction from the top exhausts will pick up the warmer air and move it out.

One thing that I would look out for though is with more fans blowing in than sucking out, you have a potential for a positive air pressure inside the case and that's a bad thing for air circulation. Air doesn't lend itself to creating pressure and pushing against things like water does-if air has a hard time moving, it just stagnates and stagnant air inside a case is going to quickly become hot air. It's all kind of hypothetical, and probably wouldn't be a problem but if you do notice weird temps that's where I'd look first when troubleshooting.
 
Well I would rather not loose the 140mm fan out the back. i also would not want to suck air in from the back because there is a wall there about 6 inches away from the computer and the hot air blows out from the side of the case etc.

I ran some prime95, and cpu 0 failed after a while. the temp were getting rather hot. it hit 70c. (i am using a core 2 duo cpu) and the max tj is 85c on this cpu.

I reversed the fan that the rad is on so it is blowing air in to try it. so far its slightly better. 64c. I think I am going to have to go buy a new 120 mm fan and do the push pull thing.

I noticed the fan speed is only 1600rpm on the stock fan they supply, but my other 120mm are 1900-2000rpm. I am going to buy some new ones and drop the stock fan which isn't doing the job.

I'll probley end up pushing air out of the case again cause I just don't like the idea of pushing air into the case from the rad. So far prime 95 is still running and highest temp is 64c from 70c reversing the fan.

I have 2 8800gtx cards in the case, and they do get very hot sitting doing nothing lol.

In my old case I had 2 fans push pull out the back and it was prime 95 stable (with the side cover off) as with it on it got so hot in my case i was scared the video cards would blow up as well as my hard drives. and the cpu would go well past 70 at which I stopped prime95 from running

I never knew that the stock fan that came with the h50 ran so slow. Like I said, tommorow I am going to buy 2 faster fans and get back 2 you guys on what happenes with the temps

I also don't like the idea of blowing into the case because this case has a filter at the bottom where it sucks in the air, and keeps the case clean. blowing in from the top will make the case dirty in time which I am not fond of.
 
Try both ways and see which one results in lower temps.

I recently bought a new Scythe fan for the side of my Antec 300 next to the graphics card. I set it up as an exhaust fan at first and didnt notice a difference in temps. When I switched it to intake not only did my GPU temp drop but so did my CPU temp. Granted by only a couple degrees but every little bit helps.
 
Ok, so I swapped the fan to blow in to the case. I passed prime 95, temps ended up slowly rising to like67c or something.

I still don't like the idea of blowing hot air into the case. I ended up buying 2 120mm antec tri mode fans today and throwing the fan that came with the h50 in the fan box.

Both on high spinning around 2000-2100rpm 79cfm and temps around 64 max
And they are blowing air out.

Done deal. I am happy enough.

btw. the voltage i am running to get this 3.6ghz oc on my core 2 cpu (2 cores) is 1.456v Which is alot, and also causing so much heat lol. oh well. its prime95 stable anyhow
 
Usually what you want is air coming in from the front and out the back.

If you are unsure then test it. Place you fans and run prime95 and coretemp and see which placements give the best results.
 
A few days later now. playing around some more. I moved the rad to the middle position of the 3 120mm fans instead of directly over the motherboard. that made a large difference in temps 58c-59c using prime95 under max heat/power. I think before eventually I was getting 64-66c

I re adjusted the waterblock, checked the hs paste and managed 1c better temps 57-58 running prime95 max heat/power

So I guess I finally got the best of both worlds I got slightly better temps now blowing out of the case, then when I got blowing into the case when the rad was directly over the motherboard. Just by moving the rad to the middle spot of the 3 120mm fans.
