So after the recommended specs came out, it is now time to ditch this c2d 6850 ip35 combo. Can't be a worse time. Need a very budgetable upgrade build.
I have a case and power supply, keyboard mouse and monitor. Ssd will have to wait, will reuse my hdds
I have a r9 285 for a video card, only need 1080p.
I have an i7 920 untested ebay find.
1366 boards are outrageous. Been looking at other combos vs finding a 1366 board. The 1150 stuff can be cheap.
I have been over clocking the c2d to 3.8ghz for 7 years now. Planned another over clock build with the 920 but can't get a deal on a board.
Don't know what can be over clocked with the 1150 stuff.

So I'll need ddr3 and a motherboard, and maybe a processor.
Can only spend about $200.
Anyone with ideas? Suggestions? Some knowledge to start my search off right?

go the 1150 socket route and abandon any ideas of overclocking. cheapest h81 board you can find, preferably an msi or gigabyte for easy rma. should cost you $40-50 new. cheapest 2x4gb kit of ddr3 1600 should cost $40. used i3 4160 from ebay. going price is $100.

I would like a motherboard I could put a better chip in later. Seems like lots of northbridge chips for this socket. I dont need a top overclocker but wouldnt want to exclude it. What ones allow it?

Keep trying for a 1366 MoBo...that i7-920 is pretty stout when you compare it to newer gen processors that would fit in your overall budget (damn thing is about on par with an FX-6300!)

If you want the newer chipset and a "placeholder" CPU until you can buy an i5 or i7, check these out:
** G3258 (overclockable) + 8GB Mushkin Stealth DDR3-1600 1.35V combo...$104 shipped
** MSI Z97 Krait $111 shipped

I've seen i5 2300 go for $60-70 get a cheap z68/z77 board for $60-70. A single 8 GB stick of ddr3 goes for about $35.

1366 boards are so expensive now. Unless u can get a good price newer might be the better way to go. Also, Sand and onward has big power efficiency gains over nehalem and under.

Thats a pretty good run down of the options I have. All doable in budget. Personally Like the g3258 z97 combo. But to bring it back around, what would be best for fallout 4? It sounds multi thread happy. Would the 920 out perform the 3258?

In multi-threaded code that is capable of using more than two threads, yes...by a decent margin.

the game engine probably does like some multi threading hence the minimum spec cpu is a hyperthreading dual core. cheap z97 boards will run you $90-100. the non z-series boards do allow you to lock in the turbo multipliers. so a chip that runs at 3.2ghz can be set to try to run at its max 3.6ghz turbo.

To put it in perspective, FarCry 4 wouldn't even get past the splash screen unless there were 4 threads present. I don't see the G3258 as a gaming budget performer going forward.

Stop dreaming, $200 won't get you a FO4 capable PC, 500 is like the bare bare min.

What makes you think everything else from your old PC will just work? I've see too many people only bought x y z then found out they need more, a lot more.

Maybe, maybe not. If not, then $200 is a way to at least prep for it, but thanks for insulting a fellow enthusiast that is trying their damnedest to do what it takes with the constraints they have.

Dont need a whole pc. $200 for upgrade. Pretty sure the mouse keyboard monitor sata burner sata drives and an r9 285 will work in any pc newer than mine. Atx hasent changed, power supply already runs this his card and a very hungry overclocked cpu.

Most x58 motherboards are under 200. Just dont want to spend 200 to get 1 more set of games.

Z97 has an upgrade path, but with this budget im buying a throw away chip.

Sounding it out helped. Rather "waste" $60 on a processor to be replaced than $175 on a eol motherboard.

Have been building my own since good old thunderbird days. Always trying to get the most from my hardware. This one went for 7 years built ps2 era. with various vid card upgrades. Played most of the aaa games Not too shabby.

I would wait until the game comes out, and a major site benchmarks it. You're not going to know until that happens.

Remember when the "recommend" spec for Skyrim was a quad core? Yeah, it didn't make a lick of difference over a Pentium dual core.

We'e seen a lot of new games released that are perfectly playable on two cores. Check out the Battlefront beta, where a dual core at 1.2 GHz (clocked at that low speed for multi-core testing purposes) managed over 30fps!

I'm pretty sure that at 3.0 GHz, that would deliver over 60fps!

Even though the "minimum" system requirements is a Core i3 at 3.3 GHz, it can get by on less!

Eh, I don't see what's wrong with your current setup. You got 8 gigs of that old school ddr2? You'll be fine.

This Lenovo server goes on sale for 285 every couple of weeks. A similar Dell also goes on sale for under $300. The Xeon is decent (8MB cache like an i7). I got second stick of 4GB RAM for $24. I changed power supply and tossed in a AMD 7850.

They've released the system requirements. Looks like it basically needs a DirectX 11 compatible card and at least a Quad Core. 8 Gigs of ram for the minimum.

Dude, the reason why he made this thread is because they had been released. Read the OP.

And I still stand by my recommendation of waiting for official benchmarks. Elder Scrolls Online released just a year ago doesn't use four cores. If it did, the performance difference between a 3.3 GHz Core i3 and a 3.7 GHz turbo Core i5 would have been higher than 10%!

Basically, I'd believe it when I see it.

FO4 does have high official spec compare to what we have seen. But then again better than games like witcher 3 where recommend spec barely get you High + 1080p

Why not just wait until the game is out and save money in the meantime so you can get something better than "throw away" quality?
