Fallout 3 ... overrated?

However I think it was a clever strategy for Bethesda to release it towards the end of the year to keep it fresh in people's mind for possible Game of the Year awards.

Actually the game could have really benefited from another couple months testing and polishing.

The game was just way too short compared to my expectations, IMO. I was expecting an Oblivion level of content. There isn't really anything comparable to the guilds or things like that to keep me interested after I "beat" the game (more proper to say the game ended, I guess).

I did play it a little more for exploring and beating some of the super mutant behemoths, but when I started back over to play it as evil, I just couldn't do it. I would imagine that removing the level cap so I could max out my guy as I finished up some loose ends would have made me stick around.

The one thing I really didn't like was the lack of variety in the items. A laser pistol is a laser pistol is a laser pistol, with few exceptions. In Oblivion you were always looking around for magic items, and in FO3 they really cut back.

That said, first time through, it was a blast. It's just no Oblivion.

The game suffers greatly from shitty combat mechanism which feels like a mix beetween low budget fps and bad rpg.

I'm selling mine as soon as i finish it and considering amount of copies on auction services a lot of pc gamers share my sentiment

The vaults were all totally disappointing. This game felt too much like Oblivion on the el-cheapo side and too little of the actual Fallout world.

Hey everybody, have you heard the news about a guy named Butcher Pete?

Seriously though... It's not the best game I've ever played, but I find it quite enjoyable, and dare I say downright addictive at times. I've been an RPG fan pretty much forever, and I really liked Oblivion and the expansions. So, I guess it's no surprise I like Fallout 3. That's not to say that the game is without annoyances though. You pick up an object, and nearby objects start to levitate. Mirrors don't actually reflect anything. Quests can get broken by doing things in an order that the programmers didn't intend. And a level 20 cap?!?

I'd have liked a more advanced engine with less bugs, but overall I don't think it was over-hyped. I find it quite entertaining, and it'll probably be on the list of my favorite games for a while.

And yes, the Alien Blaster is nifty :)

The mod community for the Fallout 3 is very much alive and kicking. Adding mods to this game can improve various different aspects of the game. If you feel that the game could use some tweaking as I have, please give some of the awesome mods that are currently available a try. You'll definitely be surprised in a very pleasant way. So far I've successfully modded the game to:

1. Improve overall textures of the wasteland with much higher resolution (and better looking) user created versions.
2. Added many different and unique weapons (nothing too overpowering since I do not want to unbalance the game). One example is the grenade launcher that can shoot mines and grenades that you collect a ton of but rarely gets used.
3. Removed the 20 level cap
4. Added ability to allocate and effectively utilize skill points beyond 100.
5. Wasteland monsters have high res textures as well as glowing eyes at night
6. Many different high res textures for various different armors, weapons, the moon, the stars, and etc.
7. Added 40 additional songs to the 3 Dogs music library. The new songs even playback with the aged LP sound.
8. Made leveling take longer (i.e. requiring more exp to level while gaining less exp per kills)
9. Improved gun sounds
10. Added additional 70 unique perks.
11. Made game playable even if main story is completed
12. Improved Dogmeat to be a capable sidekick
13. Weight mod to increase the carry limit
14. Made main character to run 30% faster (enemies run faster too)
15. Made Pipboy light feature 30% brighter

As you can see, this is quite a list. There many more mods I have implemented that I haven't listed here. If you want to give it a go, check out this site:

After reaching level 20 about 25% of the way into the game everything else became idiotic repetition. Fight a giant radscorpion, fight some mercs, find some useless garbage, find another 'unique' but stupid gun. There are plenty of unique weapons (and a few armors) to find, but no real use for them. The alien blaster is weak compared to the firelance, and why use either when the AR-21 Plasma Rifle is far better at range and the Terrible Shotgun is instant death in close.

So I installed some mods, but just like Oblivion you never know what the modders really put in their mods. And you never know how good they are at keeping their mod clean.

Poor game and horribly over-rated. I'd give it a 7 out of 10 and call it an insult to the Fallout franchise.

I won't even go into all the problems.

to me, no overrated. Just disappointed. It just doesn't compare to 1 and 2 in terms of story or characterization.

The fact that I always disliked Morrowind and Oblivion probably contributed to this as well.

I also don't like using the excuse of oh there's mods avilable to counter the fact the original game was not great.

Games are like food.
Some would have burger and fries rather than caviar.
Fallout 3 is caviar.

Its an awesome game, Does it deserve all the hype it gets? Maybe, every game has that, for example, the halo 3 hype, and even now, the killzone 2 hype.

Like i said, its an awesome game, i just wished they added more side quests. Its still added up to around 30 hours of gameplay for me, that being doing the main story line and 45/50 Live Achievements. I'm looking forward the expansion.

I've had the opposite experience of many of you. I couldn't stand Oblivion. I quickly lost interest in the game, it was just boring. However I am absolutely addicted to Fallout3. Definitely one of my favorite games of the last year. It is worth every bit of the praise.

Not that opposite here, Same boat with oblivion, i uninstalled after i escaped that dungeon. ;)

Love the game, but....the 1.1 patch is overrated....I installed, loaded up a save game, and all of my inventory is GONE.

WTF?

How is the patch overrated when there are so many complaints about it? Check the official forum and see if they have a solution for your problem concerning the missing inventory. I remember seeing someone posting about it a day ago.

Even though the mod community is huge, there are waaaay too many mods to sift through and most are just small fixes and additions.

I don't think I will ever play fallout 3 again until somebody makes a large package liks Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul for fallout.

I don't think it is. I played it for 200+ hours on multiple characters and am just about ready to call it wraps, I've done nearly everything in it. After I do Agethas song and get the energy bobblehead I don't think their will be anything left to do until the Official Mods are release.

Overrated? No, not really.

Did I like it? Meh.....

It was fun at first. I found myself getting bored. I feel a game can be too open-worlded.
I didn't like the idea of having to open every little box and shelf if I wanted to make money or get good items. I found myself mashing the E key too often, more of a chore than fun for me.

Combat mechanics I though were not bad. I though V.A.T.S. was cool but got boring. All in all I got bored too quickly because I had other games that I wanted to play.

If this was my only game, I think I would enjoy it more, because I would put in more time to do some things, but I found myself just wanting to finish it so I can move on to the next game.

I would say its worthy of most of it's reviews.

I know many people who gave up on this game after being addicted for about a month. Then they suddenly and completely lost all interest including myself. It doesn't have staying power and grows tired once you hit level 20 and you are just doing the same things over again.

True, to me it got boring after doing every side quest and discovering every place that has some decent things inside. 144/160 places discovered, i recently went 64 bit and i did backup my saves, i just hope i did not forget some diff files other than the saves and im screwed out of all my playtime.

I think I better understand why people don't like the game. After only playing the first story line mission, I went and starting wandering around and doing all the side and other missions. This is was I really, really enjoyed about the game. Yesturday and today I played all the storyline missions. Wow, that was a letdown. I bet if I would have followed the story much closer from the start, I wouldn't of liked the game either.

Now I am going to go back to one of my saves and play the other side missions I missed and pick up a few more achievments before I stop. It looks like I have about 1 more day of solid playing before I am going to put it away and get to playing the Fable II expansion. The other game I got addicted to in the last few months.
