Stardock's new 4x turn-based strategy game Fallen Enchantress was released a few days ago. I decided to give this one a try even though WoM was horrible and, as it turns out, I am enjoying FE quite a bit. Performance is subpar (tip: definitely turn off outlines) and it has its fair share of bugs, but besides those two areas, I think it is a good game.

Has anyone else played it?

A friend of mine says it plays like fantasy themed Civ and hasn't encountered any game breaking bugs so far. I guess that's good. Not so good that people are expecting game breaking bugs from their game however, lol.

I thought the entire point of FE was to fix all the bugs and performance issues from the first game, 2 years later they still haven't figured it out?

FE is supposed to fix everything that was bad with WoM. :p And I didn't mean to imply it is riddled with bugs, just to expect some. I have yet to play a 4x game that's only a few days old and it being bug-free.

In general I like it better than Warlock. Game is more fun/better balanced. I'm also a fan of the stylized graphics (looks like a watercolor painting) but that is more a personal preference.

They did a good job on this version (the original Elemental was a neat idea but bad execution) and I'd say it is worth it.

You can also expect plenty of mods n' updates n' such. Stardock is big on updating their games for a long time, and Elemental is really easy to mod. Already people are all over their forums modding it for various things. There's a UI mod called something like the Big UI mod that is real nice. Generally enlarges lists so while they may not be as aesthetically perfect, you get more on screen at once.

Thar be a big beasty:

It was a lot of fun as he triggered, along with ~5 groups of nasty enemies, when I got near a solitude grave site. So, I took my Sov and Iron Masters (a slightly tweaked Iron Golem design I made) and fought my way out. My only other choice was to stay and fight Morian.

I was very excited for elemental but it turned out pretty bad. For this, Starxick went out and got the Guy who made the Fall from Heaven mod for Civ 4, which was absolutely incredible, and made him lead designer of this. I expect good things.

Not just him but John Shafer too, another Civ developer. They did good this time around. It is a fun game and really, what more can one want? :)

I just found out I had this game for free from the customer service thread in the front page stories (I don't normally check my Stardock account) ... I am installing now and will have to try it out later in the week ... looks good from what you all are describing and since I got it for free as an original purchaser of Elemental I guess it will be even nicer that way :D

Yeah I got an email from the CEO or so it claimed, since I bought elemental when it came out, the email literally said "We noticed you bought elemental for $50 and it turned out to be a bad game" they basically said sorry for making a shitty game, here have this new game free. So they gave me this one to appologize for the first one I guess?

You guys are making me question my decision to pass on this game. I have WoM and although it's not a bad game, the lack of stability and the memory leaks etc made it not worth playing.

I had a friend get this and he said they have not fixed it like he hoped. Crashes every 30 or so minutes and is just generally unstable.

His system is pretty dated, but should be able to run this pretty easy. He's got a 920 with 8 gigs of ram and a 460... It should be laughing at this game and it doesn't...

Check your Stardock account ... depending on when you bought Elemental you might have a free copy of Fallen Sorceress ... I preordered Elemental WoM and Fallen Enchantress was waiting in my Stardock account for download.... give it a look :)

I crash after the year 250-300 (each turn is one season) but if I disable autosave then it doesn't crash at that point.

I'm going to necro this thread since the game is on sale @ Steam for $13 till Thursday....

What's the verdict for those that purchased at launch?

Version 1.3 just came out recently, adding a whole lot of new stuff (supposedly, haven't tried it out yet). 1.2 was pretty decent, though not great. FE was supposed to be a totally different game than E:WoM, but I never got that feel. It seemed just a less buggy version of the original with a bit more stuff to do.

For $13, if you like the genre, it might be worth a try. It's not bad at all, but it never really sucked me in. It was fun for a while, but I found I grew tired of it after a couple weeks. Meh.

Brad needs to stop sexually harassing his employees and start focusing on making better games.

The plaintiff in that suit admitted to fabricating almost all of her allegations.

You are only pithy if you're accurate. Nice try.

Stardock gave it to me for free for purchasing Elemental:WoM. I genuinely enjoyed WoM for about a week before I decided I found all there was to enjoy in the game. FE is a huge step up, if only for the depth they added to the unit creation (e.g. weapon types finally have the boons/banes they should have). It hasn't hooked me yet, but it's mostly because there are so many games competing for my attention.

The reviews are mostly positive, I bought it a while back during the christmas sale but got sidetracked with newer games.

It seems compared to Elemental , FE was a great upgrade and made the game mostly into what it was meant to be/should have been.

Plus there's a new upcoming expansion called Legendary Heroes, which will be free to people that bought Elemental before Nov. 2010 again like Fe was free, but for FE buyers it will cost 19.99, or if you don't have FE it will be 39.99 (because it includes FE along with it).

Here's a more recent interview about why Stardock is still working on FE/legendary heroes.

Its a very good game imho. The crash bugs are still annoying and the battle part needs a bit of work still. But as a strategic fantasy game its very strong.

Just went in on legendary heroes. The changelogs look godly. forums.elementalgame.com/441387/page/2

I'm thinking about jumping in on that, 19.99 for anyone that owns FE and you get into the beta.

You can get it for $17.99 through their site if you are upgrading.. Use coupon SURVEY2012
