Fahmon issue

I have an error with FahMon right now. I am not sure how it happened but I have tried to uninstall and reinstall with no improvement.

When I open FahMon I get an error: "Something is wrong with this client. Please check the messages (FahMon->Show/Hide Messages Window)."

When I go there, I get this:

I deleted and re-pathed the monitor to my work folder. I don't have a clue right now though. Any ideas?

This happened to me recently and it turned up the box fahmon is trying to look is having issues (fahlog.txt is null so that caused a error with fahmon). In the end, I had to trash the VM fully and recopy the other viable VM and reconfigure it.

I am surprised so many people use FahMon considering all the trouble it has been giving me. For example, all of the clients on two systems are permanently reported as 'hung' and no amount of reconfiguring has changed their status. It's been like that for weeks.

This happen if the time on the boxes you are trying to watch is advanced a few mins vs the time of the computer hosting fahmon. It rely on the time difference to check if it is hung or not so if it's advanced by even 1 min, it think it's hung for almost 24 hours.

I tried changing the time on both these computers and it didn't fix the problem. Both of them are several minutes behind the monitoring computer where FahMon is installed.

I normally monitor my clients with FahSpy but also use FahMon because it sometimes reports a stopped client when FahSpy won't. Both are good to have.

It might report differently. Install it and let us know. I've seen so many weird things with FahMon that using FahSpy for me is a no brainer. It doesn't support Linux, though. Also, FahMon is a little better at displaying stopped clients but that is the only advantage I see (besides Linux support) and the sole reason I even bother with it at all.

Yes, you should backup the work directory and queue.dat then reinstall the client.

Thread necrosy time.

I am still having this same issue. I have tried fahmon at work on that computer just running a console client to see what it's numbers look like. I am perplexed.

Also, I uninstalled the SMP because it was not working out with my computer well. I went a couple days where I would EUE every couple hours on a computer that had been solid for a few months. I loaded 2 instances of the console on that one and it doesnt read either. Any other ideas? Thanks for your help so far.

I would try posting the issue at fahmon.net, uncle_fungus is pretty good about trying to fix things and figure out what's wrong with the program so just open a ticket and let him know what's going on.

I hope this post is related enough to the topic. I haven't had any problems with the FAHmon program (but then I only have 5x boxen ATM), the program successfully
reads 3x Ubuntu OS boxen and 2x diskless no nothin' folder boxen just fine. (I do love how fast and easy it is to set up the diskless client ) If I get a red hang deal the first thing I do is see if the boxen is fubarred, if not, I just close the program and reopen it and everything is copacetic.

Does the new GPU client report it's progress to FAHmon, if not, has anybody put their programing skills to work and hacked the program?

If it wasn't for FAHmon I would have absolutely no way to know what my 1% frame times were, what WU the client was crunching, what the ETA was, what the PPD total was or even if the boxen was having problems. (it's reference, I have to check to make sure it's not a false alarm)

Guys, it is very important that all your machines have the time synchronised. On Windows, it only syncs every 7 days which is far to long.

I would suggest that you change it to 24 hours or less, there are plenty of howtos on the net to do this, however it does require editing of the registry so back it up first.

There should also be instructions on how to change the servers from the default to something useful.... ie pool.ntp.org servers. Some home modem/routers also can act as an NTP server, so you can sync to your own router, saving bandwidth if you have a big farm.

Linux has built in tools to do this. Fairly easy to set it to run as a Cron job every 6/12/24 hours.

there is an option in fahmon that says ignore asynchronous clocks. I checked it, and my client stopped showing as hung. Was it a coincidence? Instead of showing hung,now they have blue boxes.

Thing to remember on every install is you need to find the Work folder and then move up one directory from there... because both the ATI and Nvidia GPU clients love to hide that...

Here is also a hint... if you have not told windows to show hidden files you will not even see the directory Tiger is talking about. So go in to windows explorer under Tools then Folder Options then under the view tab check the Show Hidden Files and Folders.

Yeah, I couldn't find the damn folder myself I had to use the search bar and just typed in "Folding@home" and I saw it come up I think the awesome search bars everywhere in Vista is probably my favorite thing about it. Makes finding stuff when I'm lazy so much easier.

Only a suggestion, but you guys ought to get together and post a "sticky" on that info. I imagine there are a lot (and more coming) of people that want to use FAHmon to monitor their progress in the GPU client and really don't know how (especially the "hidden folder" deal)

Oh yeah, and this certainly ain't no minor thing either, thanks Mitsimonsta for the info on the synchronized clock thing that seems to cure some "hung" problems in FAHmon. Although I haven't had any problems with FAHmon (knock on wood, my head sometimes) there are a lot of people that need to scynchronize their boxen more than every 7x days. (like rit' now )
