OMG I understand what you guys go through the borg computers now. I put a F@H no-nonsense console on my Dad's comp and he got pissed. Now here's the kicker--It's my computer that I just let my parents use. It's kinda like my fileserver (AMD 1600+, 512mb RAM, 40gb HD).

He also stores his digital pictures on there cause he's a photographer and he's liek don't put anything on there it will slow it down. I set the priority to low and at 10. Half the time the computer just sits...

He's being stupid, not ignorant--I explained what and how F@H works, so now there is no excuse. I really am getting sick of him acting like it's his computer.I built it myself. He has not payed a dime on it except electricity. I personally own every computer...

Actually the worst thing is that I had F@H on that comp for almost 2 years without him caring. I decided to start folding again recently. So yea...

His paranoia most likely comes form work...where the non-stop porn trafficing his buddies do causes them to get these damn trojans and shit and now I can't even seem to touch that computer when he's home.

I guess this can just be chalked up to the our spyware paranoid society where any computer process that is unknown is bad. It's a shame really, as it can be directly attributed to a misinformed user base.

Hopefully you can have some luck swaying his attitude and maybe you ought point him in our direction so he can see what we do, and why. Sometimes all it takes is a small show of the dedication of the group, and more importantly the project to get people to realize that the pros far outweigh the cons.

If I were you, I would put folding and there and explain that it is your hardware he is getting to use and you want some use out of the hardware yourself.

I own about 1/2 to 3/4 of my mom's computer and I run F@H on it. I ran G@H on it previously when it was actually mostly hers. I do the upkeep and fix everything on it so she can't say much. She has saved a lot of money because of me. If she actually found out how much a computer can cost and the upkeep, she would shit her pants.

Just tell hiim youve uninstalled it and leave it on there, and change him down to a guest account with no privelidges to open the task manager. if its your pc its your pc.

Seriously. When my parents have had any issues with F@H, mainly one time when it got two big WU's and saturated the memory bus for about 12 hours before one finished, I just explain to them how much maintenance work I've done on their computer, in hours, all of which was out of warranty on the old one, and the new one I've kept them from having to call Dell tech support about 8 times. So far, the total amount of work I've done keeping their computer running, at minimum wage, is about 8 grand over 5 years. Now, that's more than it would be if they had taken it to a tech support place when they had problems, but then they'd have gotten charged about 3 grand overall plus about 2 grand in hardware, and voided their dell warranty sooner and gotten charged even more for hardware by bad tech support people. It's so much easier to just explain everything. In simple terms, preferrably.

OK now from a paranoid's DAD perspective -
Gee it's nice you built and support his computer.
Remember he built and supports YOU.
I've a 17 yr old that does pretty good with comps - but has fried more than 1 CPU because he "thought" he could do it quicker.
Suggest to your dad that one of the main problems is the AMD 1600, he really needs to kick in the bucks and upgrade to a 3000 with 1Gb of RAM.
Or try to set up a time schedule around him -
Example
Dad gets home at 1600 - wants to use the computer from 1700 to 2000.
Set up a scheduled task to run folding at 100% on big WU from 2100 to 1530, then run a TT from 1530 to 2100.
Do the math - if you run 3 hours at 100% it's better than running 24hrs at 10%.
If you have not already, check to see if any of your relatives have suffered from what Folding is attacking. Bring this up. I don't fold for myself, it's probably too late. I fold for my children, and grandchildren.

Well here's the deal.
My grandma bought that comp like years ago for me to replace my pentium 100mhz 32mb ram 2.5gb HD NEC computer. :-P
Since then I have upgraded it from onboard graphics to a 9600xt (for him) and from 128mb RAM with 32mb of that video shared to 256mb and now to 512mb. I would put an extra 128mb I have but for compatability I haven't.
I just recently started driving so I don't want to piss him off. He did let me have one of the cars...
And I just officially got a gf after dating this girl from work...and shes madddd hot not to mention shes really sweet. That's usually a combo that's hard to come by. So I would like to be able to see her....

Anyways I think I'll try to inform him in the morning again. I just gotta figure out how I can have it run even at very very low speeds without interfearing with his damn camera stuff.

*sigh*

I am even giving him my 3200+ barton, asus mobo, and ram most likely when I go to upgrade in return for the 1600+ I'll put in a spare asus matx board and a compaq case. I'll just keep 1gb in that and I'll have instant server. :D

He'll have instant fast computer.

Damn anyways yea I'll have to "splain to him" as the say on I love Lucy....I loved that show back in my younger days :)

**EDIT Yes my server will fold.

May I suggest, ray4389, that you bookmark the official Stanford F@H webpage on the computer and then ask him to check it out for himself. This seems like one of those situations where a person (your dad) would be able to convince himself of the truth of the matter by exploring it at his own pace than by having it shown to him. It might take a day or two for him to get around to it, but it's not likely to get you grounded or your car privledges revoked.

I seriously doubt F@H is actually causing any problems with his photo stuff, so if he relents to let you reinstall the client I'd suggest that you run it at lowest priority & 100% CPU usage (both are default settings anyways).

Good luck & congratulations on the girl!

congrats on the girl;)

as far as dad i just kept talking to my dad about it in a way that he started to understand what it was doind i got excited about the points i was generating then he started coming around to the point where he said he would install it on 3 of his clients offices for about 20-25 computers. soooo dunno just another idea

I knew something was missing yesterday...

Unless he's running Photoshop or something that is an absolute memory hog, there's not a reason he should complain.

I like ArionIscariot suggestion of letting him browse through the Stanford information though, it's just crazy enough to work. ;)

Why don't you just turn off F@H on your server for a few days, and not say a thing. If he's still complaining about speeds and such, then it's clearly not F@H that's causing the issue. An alternate, if you're feeling sneaky, is to use some of the programs to hide F@H from him completely.

pic21586.jpg

there's a picture and for the weird dudes like don't defile the picture and try to do some weird porno effect to it.

seriosuly that's fucked up.

i'll keep it up for like 1 day

anyways yea I'm going to talk to him real quick to see what happens

Not bad... not bad :)

She looks like she is good enough to be the only girl :)

Hope it works out :D

sooo here's the convo

"so dad how bout that F@H"
"i don't like it"
"i ran it for 2 years until recently"
"i don't want to tlak about it"
"google folding at home"
"i don't want to talk about it"
"let me explain.."
"i don't want to talk about it"
"you could be folding right now with wasted cpu clocks"
"leave me alone"

So I went to my room and decided to do a new backup of my music on the computer just in case of emergency loss of music. I have about 13gb of music. I had an old backup so I deleted that off his computer via network and now I'm putting it on there 50 min left. HHAHAHAAHA

His computer is going to be slow for a while. Did I mention his making a slideshow right now?

Well since conventional discussion isn't going to work, may I suggest you smack him with a stick?

It's too bad, but at this stage you probably oughta just leave it be. Every boxen counts, but this definitely sounds like a case to drop and revisit some other time.

Too bad you're too far away. Otherwise I could come over and "talk" some sense into him. I have various ways and tools to make a discussion interesting. :D

Oh yeah, that's a damn nice looking female there. Does she have a non-attached sister between the ages of 23-30? ;)

She has a sister whos 18/19 going to college this coming semester with a BF in the Navy who is pretty buff...which I'm not lacking but he's more of the body builder buff and I'm the usefull athletic type. I could like actually put my muscles to work and do a triathlon so to speak like iron man...and his would just slow him down. Another example...I could do say 30 pullups and he might do 10...
Mine aren't so big they are useless in actuall physical activity.

My dad is being such a little bitch. Now he want's me to remove all my backedup music off that computer becuase he only has 2gb left. What a cry baby. There goes my FUCKING FILE SERVER. Bastard.

This is my smart ass.

I said, " Well if I remove my music I get to putting folding @ home on there correct?"

Now he told me to rebuild a piece of crap compaq that he bought me for christmas. I tore it apart bought my own compnents and kept the DVD drive and CPU. LOL

I told him that I didn't want it. It cost me like $2000 to build my computer instead of $800 for a damn 64bit computer. Ayos Mios.

**EDIT I paid for all my stuff. My 6800, my 9600xt, like 2 gb RAM, my 2 160gb HDs,mobo, case, 2 psus, speakers 150watt i-trigues, soundcard...etc etc
