Since I’m new to folding (started two weeks ago) and I plan on running 24/7, I want to make sure that I am maximizing my PPD. Of course it goes without saying that I am folding for team 33! I have a hand full of computers folding but I have two that I am most concerned with. They are both dual Xeon x5650 with Turbo and HT enabled servers with 48GB of 1333 RDDR3 each. They are both running Server 2008 R2 w/SP1.

One of the servers has quite a lot going on but it still manages to pull ~56k PPD. The other server has very little in the way of tasks and it pulls ~62k PPD. Just pure SMP, no GPU. I have FAH GPU Tracker V2 as my client for both servers with –bigadv switch enabled.

My question is, should I switch to another client or does it not matter? Also, the underworked server could be switched over to Linux. Is it going to make that big of a difference? Thank you in advance!

My current overall PPD is ~200k with all my systems but that number is going up with time as I have added more to my farm just recently.

i think the one 2p system that isn't being used as much you may be able to run bigadv. should net you a heck of a lot more points, just remember to setup your passkey if you haven't yet.

The OP says bigadv enabled. Did you mean linux?

Yeah, -bigadv is turned on for both servers. The server that is worked [H]arder still finishes its WU in about three hours. No WUs have ever failed. Passkey was entered in every client. I only asked because I get concerned when I see people pulling six figure PPD on a single box. I know OCing has a lot to do with it. I just want to do everything that I can for the [H]orde and maybe I’m a little competitive. :)

woops drank a little to much.. trying to sober up before i got to sleep.

if your running stock then yeah the numbers are about right.. the people pulling in 6 figure numbers are running overclocked 2p 6 core/12 thread xeon systems and 4p 12 core magny cour systems.

If you can switch to Linux, you should. If you can't switch to Linux, you should consider running a Linux virtual machine using VirtualBox for folding under Windows. Linux is much more efficient for folding.

If you do decide to switch to Linux for one of these machines, you will want to use BFS. If you know Linux, you should understand what that means. If you don't know Linux, use my Ubuntu installation guide. You will also want thekraken, and need to make sure NUMA is enabled on your machines.

If you can go with a VM on the box that has to stay with Windows, jebo has a post on setting this up with a 24 core machine.

Welcome, and let us know if you have any issues with the setup.

Thanks for the help! I think I'll switch the one box over to Ubuntu. The other server has a free PCIe slot open and I plan to fill it with a single slot GTS 450 just for folding.

Believe it or not, the GPU may not be worth folding on if you did have it. The reason is that the relatively small CPU depand of the GPU client has a huge effect on the smp ppd. The faster the machine, the bigger the effect. The net ppd increase end up be very small if it exists at all, and the box will be drawing another ~100-150W. I would not recommend doing this.

Looks like you have already been helped...

well ... Welcome to the team... you ppd has already been noticed and we are happy to help you tweak your setup for more.

come into irc sometime and say hi...

irc.dp.cx #hardocp

Good to know. Maybe I'll just shop around on ebay and see what I can find. Perhaps I'll build another box.

Welcome to team team 33!

Linux would help a good deal. Also even something as simple as web browsing can cut preformance 10% or more.

Fold on!
