Thanks to Technet, I got a copy of Server 2008. and going to put it on my filserver today to replace vista ultimate.

I am hoping Hyper-V will allow me to run "notfred's" folding@home iso and gets use of a 4 core virtual machine vs 2 x vmware setup I have now.

Has anyone tired running on Hyper-V yet and what were the results?

 
No but I pray to god that it works.
I am moving my server to 2008 soon so it would be nice to only have one VM software installed.
 
I'm sub'ing cause I'm very interested in this.
 
curious, didnt we find out those VM's work best with 2 cores anyways?
 
Asuming I understand what EA is talking about, you would only need to run 1 instance of the VM that will run on all 4 cores (or 2 in the case of a C2D or 8 in the case of an i7) instead of one VM instance per 2 CPUs (physical or hyperthreaded). This is only really available right now via VMWare ESXi (or something like that).

Evil, you been messing a lot with Virtual Machines these days? What kinda "evil" plans are you plotting there in your lab of doom? :D

It's the windows core that has one heck of a problem with proper scaling. The linux (and linux VM) do not have this problem from what I understand.
 
Update Time:

1st off .. Server 2008 is AWESOME.
I think it was one of the quickest and painless installs of my line.
I was up and running within 30 min and it found every driver for me with no effort.

Now, On to Hyper-V

After 10 min of unlearning VMware settings, setup was easy.

The only *snag* i hit was in the network settings.
You have to use "Legacy Network Connection" and not the standard "Network Connection" for the VM.
(It is just a setting change in the VM options and once i read the dialog boxes describing the difference, it made sense.)

Once I figured that out, everything was up and running.

I am running the notfred iso and the vm can access all 4 cores so i am only running 1 vm.

Setup only took about 2 min and the interface is so much better then the Web UI we have been dealing with in VMware server 2.0

I am very very happy with the ease of setup and configuration.

On the Performance side, I am getting the exact same PPD with 1 x VM (Hyper-V) as i did with 2 x VM (VMware Server 2.0).

Just killing time and trying to get the most PPD i can until I get into the house.
Then I will just go plain insane and start building systems left and right.
 
Rock on!!! Thanks for the info Evil!!! Glad 2008 is finally decent...and has built in multipe core VM's. That's the one thing that sucks about VMWare, only 2 CPU's!
 
OK, so let me see if I get this, your running notfred with 4 cores using what I assume to be window's VM app, and its getting the same PPD as running two notfred's instances with VMplayer from cap's guide?

Basically (2 Cores x 1 VM) + (2 Cores + 1 VM) = 4 cores x 1 Notfred's ;)

So Evil, other than only having to maintain one virtual install of Notfreds instead of two, are there any other benefit's at this point that you can tell?

If I had a better system, yes there is.

Hyper-V can scale with the number of cores your CPU has.

Example, if I had a Core i7, you could set up Hyper-V to use all 8 cores on 1 x VM.
Currently with VM ware, you would have to use 4 x VMs to use all your CPU cores.

I think that is pretty awesome.

I am still working on testing but I will let you know!

Not entirely correct. You still have the A1 and A2 cores with the Linux SMP client. It seems the vast majority of work the Linux clients are getting are A2 cores and for the most part they scale much better with additional cores. That's not to say all A2 core work units are created the same. I haven't run F@H SMP much since October so I don't know what all the current SMP Linux work units are like but I do remember one or two A2 core SMP work units which did not scale worth a damn with more than 2 cores. Even with 2 cores it was wasting a lot of cycles and getting shitty PPD.

There is a small downside I have found, but will only affect a very small % of users.

I wanted to put it on my HTPC so i could make use of the quad core there, but there is not media center for Server 2008, which is the main thing i use that system for.

Other then that,I am extremely happy with Hyper-V and performance.

Tell me about it.
Ive been saying since the day 08 hit the shelf, that they really eff'd up by not having a consumer version that had a MC module.
Or have win Vista or 7 Ultimate include hyper-v.

Either way enthusiast would buy it....I would pay $500 for a Win7 license if it had Hyper-v.

Hmm. Time to go hit MS TechNet and pick up a few copies of Server 2008 :D

Question for you EA: I believe Server 2008 (like Vista and Windows 7), you still need dummy plugs for 2 or more GPU clients. Is that correct?
Also, from what I read last night (reading eWeek and Information Week), Hyper-V can read any of the three major VM file formats. Can I just resuse the VMs already in place? or would you suggest recreating new VMs using Hyper-V?

I am contemplating Server 2008 on my lappy (Asus G71-Q1) and my main sig rig.
 
I might have figured out my HTPC issue.

I got to playing around with XBMC and IMO it is actually better then stock Media Center.

If I continue to like it, I am going to dump my vista on the HTPC and go for it there as well.

I felt like XMBC was a lot of work to get working properly.....that was 18mo ago tho.

What do you think makes it better than VMC?
 
Also is there an option to Fit VM to ram on hyper-v? like there is on vmware?
 
A note to those using Hyper-V.Make sure in the global settings - CPU resources

You need to set the Reserve to 100% to get the most performance / PPD.

This is blank by default.

I mean like I realize that hyper v scales with the number of cores, but im wondering if you would get more D if you ran 4 vms with 2 cores vs 1vm with 8 cores?

Since I have an X3350 in my fileserver, I only have 4 cores to run Hyper-V on.

There may be a small PPD boost running 2 x SMP (each using 2 cores) but it depends on one issue.

The "Legacy Network Adapter" that is used in Hyper-V + Linux is emulated so there is a CPU hit. Having two of there might cause some performance issues.

I am happy right now with 1 x SMP (Using 4 cores) --> Getting 5120 PPD :cool:
