I just installed fah 5.02 over ver 4x that has been running fine since it came out. Its running on an xp1700 under winME(yea yea i know) and upon trying to start 5.02 for the first time i get the following error messages;

! C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winfah.exe
a device attached to the system is not functioning

X The WINFAH.EXE file is linked to missing export USER32.DLL:GetLastInputInfo.

I tried deleting the entire directory, and reinstalling, tried going thru the registry and killing any ref to fah and folding but i get the same message. I have no idea about either error msg, specially the one about the device not functiong as I have done nothing other than install 5.02. All this time a ready and willing folder sits idle...
Any Ideas?? Anyone??

Did you try to install it as a service? If so, I'm not sure that is supported under ME. I was thinking that would only work on Win2k & XP.

If you didn't install it as a service I don't know what the problem would be other than just saying it's an ME problem. I've just run into too many of those to ever consider touching a system that has ME installed on it.

Yup, I think you hit that nail on the head. The config is a bit different.

Yo Byte!

Stanford left the 4.0 version available for 98/ME clients.
The 5.x has problems with non-NT kernel OSes.

Beer.

The 5.02 version works fine on my Windows 98 / Me machines.

For some reason I have benchmarked the clients on Dual Boot configurations with the same unit, and it seems that running F@H under windows me/98 is a little bit faster than running it under windows 2000 / WinXP with most services disabled.

Anyone else notice this?

Guess I'll have to leave 4x on all my non NT based machines which is all but 3, damn. Have to look into getting hold of at least win2000.... I don't suppose a fix is in the works??

This has been the thinking for quite some time, but the noted differences are really small. The only thing you lose running 98 on a pure folder is the "run it and forget it" ability since 98 will need to be rebooted occasionally. I did manage to run folding on a well tuned Win95 machine for 3 months straight, but most of my other machines run into a memory leak or something else after a few weeks.

In the time that has passed since this thread was created, has anyone had any success running the 5.02 core on Win98 machines?

I stupidly downloaded the 5.02 core and ran it on my Win98 machine without noticing that the 4.0 version is still recommended for Win98. It converted the current WU I was working on, but seems to be running fine. Should I drop back to 4.0 or leave 5.02 running?

I haven't tried it yet on a win 9x machine since the first time. I may tinker with it this weekend and let you know...
