Eyeing Sandybridge Upgrade

Haven't posted in Gen[H] in a while but I've been eyeing Sandybridge. If I'm going to do this, I'm going to jump with an SSD as well but I've been looking around and found some information but nothing definitive on what I'm trying to achieve.

I want to achieve RAID0 with 2 SSD's, specifically 2x x25-v 40GB from Intel. But this upgrade is probably going to wait until we see some information on G3 from Intel. My main concern is TRIM on a RAID0, and the motherboard I'm looking at is the MSI P67a-gd55. With this board, will TRIM go to the array? Not sure what the difference on the MSI board with it's explanation:

"SATA1~6 support Intel Matrix Storage Technology (AHCI/ RAID 0/ 1/ 5/ 10) by Intel P67 PCH"

Compared to the P8P67 (Which I'm a tad leary of noticing the problems on the Intel boards page) with it's description of:

"Intel Rapid Storage Technology Support RAID 0,1,5,10".

From what I've read the RST is what Intel has released for their chipset boards to allow RAID to have TRIM, but how does that differ from the Intel Matrix? Is the RAID controller on the P8P67 board just a better controller and allow you to have trim? What are some of my other options?

I will be upgrading from my current rig in the sig and this is what I'll be reusing:

PSU, both my hard drives, case and the HSF (i'll get the new retension bracket to fit 1155) and also my optical drive. I'm trying to get into some more production like applications, movie editing and also photo editing. I will use my current GPU, but will upgrade probably later. I don't really have that much of a problem playing games right now. Will my power supply suffice?

What I want to upgrade to:
i5 2500k
MSI P67A GD55 or Gigabyte P67-UD4
2x4GB DDR3 Most likely just Ripjaws

Unfortunately Intel RAID does not support TRIM wtih SSDs in a RAID array:
It will support TRIM with SSDs in an AHCI configuration, or with the RAID controller enabled and the SSD is used as a pass through device. An example of this use case is for users that want to use the SSD as a boot drive but still be able to RAID multiple HDDs together to allow for large protect data storage – a great use for the home theater PC. TRIM support for SSDs in a RAID configuration is under investigation and is not included in Intel® RST 9.6.

So no, Trim does not work with a SSD RAID array. However, according to some of the guys over in the Data Storage subforum, there is still a bit of garbage collection going on even when the SSDs are in a RAID array.

Intel RST is bascially Intel's Matrix RAID but renamed and updated with a different GUI.

Other options for what? And what do you want to accomplish with those options?

Your current PSU will suffice.

I meant other options for motherboards that could help me achieve that. I guess I was mostly confused on why the 2 different boards had different definitions on the RAID controller. One said Intel Matrix, the other said Intel RST, but were both P67.

Ahh. Well unfortunately, AFAIK, no RAID controller in the world supports TRIM in a SSD RAID array. However, as noted earlier, there's still a little bit of garbage collecting going on so the lack of TRIM support doesn't necessarily mean the death knell.

That's good news, when I look up garbage collection I get mostly OCZ results and documentation. Can you provide some insight?

All modern SSD's ahve some form of GC.. To oversimplyify what it does.. Its the SSD cleaning itself on its own where as Trim is the OS force cleaning the SSD.

Well with that being said, and from the articles I've read I'm still not getting a black and white picture painted in my head I guess. Is TRIM that good for your SSD (especially someone like me that doesn't format my system unless I make big system upgrades) where it's not worth losing it's function to get the speed boost of striping the SSDs?

If it's a utility that I can just simply run.. I don't have a problem doing that. Scheduled tasks = everyone is happy. Maybe I will wait and see what G3 truly brings to the table in real world compared to G2, and hopefully the reduced price on them is generous... bah, always waiting, never buying.. :(
