Eyefinity setup

Hi all

Are there any guides to setting up Eyefinity, step by step? Even AMD's pdf guide gives the most bare of directions.

Specifically the problem I'm having is that my 3 monitors are all recognized, however CCC only allows me to run 2 at a time, with extending or duplicating the third forcing the replacement of another screen. I've tried every which combination I could think of to get it working. 2 of the 3 monitors are 1080p, the third supporting higher resolution, but being a smaller screen, if that makes any difference. I want them all to run 1080p.

I bought mDP->DVI adapters from MonoPrice, but now I'm finding out that they're not active adapters (GRRR!!, they didn't add that to the item until recently, and you've got to dig through to find the answer). Is that the problem I'm having, even with 1080p monitors? I've been using dual-monitors through the adapters for months now with no problems.

The second issue I'm having is that before trying eyefinity, I upgraded to 11.3. That was a bad idea, because now I don't know if this/these problems stem from that or not. 11.2 ran perfectly. The second issue is that whatever monitor I add as a secondary now ALWAYS is garbled/pixelated. I've never had that happen before. I moved both monitors to DVI and DVI, HDMI and DVI, DP adapter to DVI and DVI, both on mDP, everything, and it's still always showing the second monitor pixelated. I've never had this problem before I installed 11.3 or tried eyefinity. Where am I going wrong?! (From some of the 11.4 comments, it sounds like people have been having this same problem when trying to set up an eyefinity group, though I haven't even been able to get that far...)

I'm downloading 11.4 preview now, but my internet connection is slow as crap, so I'm hoping I can get help before I even bother reinstalling drivers.

If I can't figure this out, I guess I'll uninstall, driversweep, and go back to 11.2.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

You need an Active adapter. Thats your problem. You can only run two monitors with passive adapters.

Ugh. That would be annoying since I bought those adapters when I first got the card and now they don't work for that. It's odd because most people said that for active adapter uses, these cables worked (Macbook Pro on cinema display was the biggest reviewed use). Either way, I ordered an active cable so it should be here tomorrow (bless you, Amazon.).

Is there a reason that passive works for driving the screens normally, or even at higher resolution, but not when you're running a third screen? That never made sense to me.

It has to do with there being only two clock controllers on the card so you can only do DVI/DVI,or you can use passive adapters for a DVI/DP or DP/DP. If your using display port to a display port monitor that does not use a clock controller and would work fine alone with two DVI ports. Otherwise you need an active adapter. Single link active adapters go up to 1920x1200 and can be found for under 30 bucks.

Ah okay. I didn't realize that there wasn't a clock generator in the passive ones vs. the active ones which do have one. That makes sense. I just assumed that the DP would have a separate clock generator than the HDMI/DVI ports. That answers that. Thanks!

Well, I did a clean install of 11.4 preview, and the pixelated second display issue went away. I'm keeping the installers for 11.2, 11.3, and 11.4 preview around, and hopefully amazon will bless me with an active adapter tomorrow. Very exciting.
